LIFE LESSONS time.

Ever look back and wish you knew something earlier?

I sure do. 🙋🏻‍♀️

Here are my top three things I find myself wishing someone had told me before...

💡 Don't be afraid to show up confident and charge what you're worth.

I struggled for SO LONG with charging lower rates and justifying them with silly reasons. I'm new. I'm in Canada (what?). I don't have a lot of followers. I do this part-time.
I wish someone had shook me and told me it's okay to charge what I feel I'm worth. I have the testimonials, knowledge, passion, and values to back it up. By charging more, I'm keeping my energy high and being my most productive self for my clients. I'll be showing up authentically. And, I'm new, so what? Baby sharks are still MF-ing sharks.

💡 It's not being b*tchy, it's being assertive - and it's a good thing.

As women, we're often told to not be "too" much. Don't be too loud. Don't swear too much. Don't talk too much about yourself. Don't make more money than your partner. Don't dress too provocatively. Don't dominate conversations. Don't argue. Don't challenge beliefs. Don't speak up if someone is bothering you, because that's rude.
Luckily, I ditched all of these pretty early on in life, but I still held them as truths for far too long. I have come to realize that speaking up is healthy. Asking for what I want is healthy. Not accepting less than what I deserve is healthy. Being vocal, being a natural leader, and being motivated don't make me less than, they make me a good entrepreneur. I'm not a bitch, I just stand my ground.

💡 Your mental health challenges can be a strength, not a weakness.

Some of you might know I am diagnosed OCD, among other things. OCD isn't just a need for things to be clean and tidy, it's a constant TV static in the mind of fears, worries, anxieties, obsessions, and compulsions. The brain picks an intrusive thought and causes the body to do irrational things to make this thought go away. Though, through therapy, medication, and lifestyle habits, OCD has been a brilliant assistant in my work. It helps me plan, helps me list, helps me celebrate checking off items and hitting deadlines. My OCD means I'm a hard worker that *literally* won't stop until the job is done, and done well. It's my secret superpower, and I'm making it work FOR me, not against me.

"Remember why you started."

I think we all could do with reflecting on this more often. 🔮

When times get challenging, or we're lacking motivation, or we're feeling like we're going nowhere, we tend to beat ourselves up. Our energy we're putting out into the universe suffers.

When I'm feeling down on myself, I like to remind myself WHY I started my business...

I started my business to own something of my own.

To get more freedom with my schedule, work from home, and set my own hours and availability.

To have financial freedom and grow my bank account to be able to provide for myself and my family.

To ease the burden of my partner as a breadwinner.

To be able to create a life I enjoyed, complete with time off, vacation, and relationships with clients I genuinely enjoy.

Tell me... what's your "why"?

Being a virtual assistant isn't what a lot of people think it is.

So, 👋🏼 I'm here to bust some myths about working and thriving as a VA.

❌ Myth #1 - VA's are only good for administrative tasks.

This is not it. VA's can help with marketing, tech, digital media, social media, web development, and business management.

❌ Myth #2 - VA's are only for giant companies.

Far from it! Most VA's I know work for small or mid-scale businesses. VA's aren't an extra resource, they're a more affordable resource. Using contractors like VA's for a set number of hours is how small businesses become big companies.

❌ Myth #3 - All VA's are the same, with the same skills.

Most VA's have their niche or specialty, and from the ones I've networked with, no two of us are alike. We all come from various backgrounds, and use our natural skills to support others.

❌ Myth #4 - VA's are a temporary solution.

A lot of people assume a VA is someone you hire to "tide you over" until you can afford "real" employees. However, VA's can be a long-term, permanent solution. We're affordable, you hire us for what you need, we're flexible in our services, and we check off all the boxes that an employee would.

We as virtual assistants are incredibly adaptable, flexible, and valuable resources. If you're unsure about how we can help you, message us!

When you sign up and purchase a service from an entrepreneur, you aren't just buying what they're offering you.

You're investing in 👇🏼

- the dozens of books they've read

- the hours upon hours of podcasts they've listened to

- the many experts they've followed under to learn

- the years of work and life experience they've had to put into practical application

- the hundreds of mistakes they've made to help you not make the same ones

- the dollars they've invested in training, workshops, seminars, courses, workbooks, certifications, degrees, diplomas, etc.

- the work they put into writing, marketing, photographing, producing, and developing something that you feel is worth being a part of

There's a saying that you don't pay for the hours it takes to do something, you're paying for the years of hard work it took them to be able to do it in hours.

Happy World Hello Day!

Hello! 👋🏼

I figured I'd celebrate this day by doing a little re-introduction of myself to any new followers or people with short attention spans.

🙋🏻‍♀️ I'm Jess, the face and owner behind J.G.

I've lived all over Canada, but currently enjoy the ocean and live in Nova Scotia. I started up J.G as a side hustle after working in social media management and non-profit, but hope to transition to full-time in the future. It's my second business I've owned, after a dog walking and training venture. My educational background is a giant mix, but mostly Arts & Design. I love being creative, playing around with graphics, and helping people summarize their story in a social media post.

I absolutely ADORE working from home, because I get to chill with my dog and go on lunchtime walks. Shoutout to Hunter for being an awesome coworker and letting me know when it's time for a snack break! 🍿

When I'm not working, you can find me hiking in the woods, reading, doing yard work, drinking wine, cooking, or catching up on all things Real Housewives.

What's a fun fact about yourself?!

Got questions? I've got answers! FAQ.

📍 Where are you based?
I'm based in Nova Scotia, Canada, but willing and able to work remotely with you across North America!

📧 What services do you offer?
I specialize in social media and graphics work. I offer social media management, social media strategy plans, custom branded social media graphics, content writing, insights and analytics reports, content repurposing (blog to instagram), logo design, and branding help.

👥 Who's your ideal customer?
I try not to niche myself down too far, since I'm new and want the opportunity to help several clients at one time. What I look for in a client is someone who's flexible, not a micro-manager, trusts me and my process, gives clear tasks for me to follow, gives feedback, and has clear and defined goals. Most of my clients are small or new business owners.

💸 What are your rates?
I sell my hours in packages, which are applicable to all of my services. You can find a list of my services, packages, and rates on my "services + rates" Story highlight above.

❓ What happens after I inquire about your services?
I'll ask you a bit about what you're looking for via the platform you contacted me on, and then I'll invite you to a consult call - which is free! In a consult call, I'll ask a bit more, and tell you about myself. If you want to book, we then do an invoice and contract I'll send through HoneyBook, and then we book a Kickoff Call to discuss strategy and next steps. I set up a custom Trello board depending on the project, and we do tasking through there. Then, I start work! At the end of the project, we'll do a debrief chat to be sure I've covered all your needs and you're happy.

🗓️ When do you work, and what's your availability like?
I work a full-time day job in healthcare admin, from home. Luckily, I can sometimes weave client work into my day, but I primarily do my client work on one or two weekday evenings, and Saturdays. I tend to book out in advance, but I'm always happy to take on smaller projects as they come. Message me for my current turnaround, as it's always evolving.

❤️ Do you love being a VA?
Hell yeah. I get to work with awesome business owners, hang with awesome women entrepreneurs, and snuggle my dog on my work breaks.

What do you wish you had more time for?

Psst... If your answers are anything like family, friends, spending time with your partner, cooking good meals, budgeting, posting on social media, growing your business, getting organized, travelling, or anything to do with freedom… I have news for you. Hiring a virtual assistant can help you. 👀

I'm weird 👀
.. in that it helps me focus if I have something on in the background.

If I'm reading, I like to have music playing. If I'm doing my crosswords, I like to have the TV on. While I'm working, I love a good podcast.

I listen to a lot of different ones, but here are a few of my favourite podcasts that ALSO make me more productive:

1. The Tim Ferriss Show (aka, 4 Hour Workweek dude)
2. TedTalk Daily
3. NPR's How I Build This
4. Comments By Celebs (snuck this in here, because I'm a die-hard Bravo nerd)
5. The Goal Digger Podcast
6. The BossBabe Podcast
7. UnF*ck Your Brain
8. Mary's Cup Of Tea Podcast
9. Criminal (Phoebe Judge's voice is *chef's kiss*)
10. Elevation with Steven Furtick (modern Christian)

I'm always on the hunt for new stuff to listen to. 🎙️🎧

Are you a podcast person? What's your fav?!

What do you get when you hire me, Jess, as your virtual assistant?

◾ Someone who's organized as heck, communicative, and hardworking. I'm an entrepreneur at heart (ask my mom about my garage sales and craft sales when I was little) and a self-starter through and through.

◾ A typical ENTJ - A Commander. I naturally gravitate into a leader position, and have no qualms about sharing my ideas and thoughts. My Trello board looks like one of those FBI string-maps.

◾ Someone who understands what it's like to start, run, and own a small business.

◾ An east coaster who's casual, caring, with the tiniest hint of an accent.

◾ Someone who will take over your social media and clean out your inbox, respond to your comments, up your likes and comments on posts, and brand your identity.

◾ Someone who will make your feed SO MUCH PRETTIER.

◾ Someone who will take your content from your website, blog, podcast, etc, and make it into smaller posts complete with CUSTOM graphics for social media.

◾ Someone who watches and tracks the latest social media news, tips, and tricks.

◾ Someone who's honest about their strengths and weaknesses, and will refer you out if needed.

◾ Someone open to feedback, with an interest in growing, and who's committed to helping YOU grow.

So, what are you waiting for? Let's connect and get started on your goals. 💪🏼

I enjoy working for free.

Me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

YES, you heard that right.

I love to work for free - AKA - I love volunteering.

Volunteering was always a thing in my family - my mom works in nonprofit, encouraged me to get involved with her, and it sort of always stuck. I've volunteered as a dog walker, writer, data entry, with hospitals, seniors, environmental organizations, and at-risk youth. I wasn't always able to give financially, so I gave my time.

To me, volunteering is a civic duty. It's a few hours a week (often less), or you can sign up for one-time events. You can make a huge difference in lives just by showing up. Who wouldn't do that?! 🤔

It's also a fantastic way to learn new skills and boost your resume. I can't count the number of transferable skills I've gained through volunteering.

So TODAY, on , I challenge you to seek out a volunteer opportunity. See what's in your area. See what's available virtually, online. See what events are coming up that need volunteers. Sponsor a family in your area with Christmas gifts or a turkey for holiday dinner.

Do you volunteer? Tell me in the comments! 👇🏼

You've probably heard me say it before, but I'll say it again.

I love working as a virtual assistant! 🙋🏻‍♀️

Here's why:

I get to make my own schedule, work my own hours, and plan my own day.
I get to accept and pass on clients, allowing me to build my relationships the way I want.
I get to keep learning. I’m always enrolled in courses, workshops, or webinars - most exclusively offered for virtual assistants.
I get to work from home or remotely, which I absolutely love. Travelling? No problem. Wanna work at a cafe for the day? Absolutely! Need to throw in a load of laundry? I can do that during my work day.

❤️ Like if you love your job!

There's probably a lot I could say here, haha, but I'll keep it short.

Working as a barista for many years taught me a few life lessons. Three important ones have stuck with me.

☕ Coffee is much more than coffee bean water.

It's true. Nothing hugs my soul or improves my mood quite like a warm, frothy latte from my favourite cafe. There were so many people who came in grumpy, and left smiling after a warm cup of brew and some chit chat. I could always light up someone's day with some latte art on top, or a sprinkle of cocoa for added flair.

⏱️ If you've got time to lean, you've got time to clean.

DAMN this one is good. It's so true. If you've got spare time, do something today to make your tomorrow easier. Organize your inbox. Deep clean your desk. Audit your instagram. If you've got spare time, put it to productive use.

🌅 Mornings are underrated.

Most people would cringe at the idea of a 5:30am wakeup for a 6:45am shift start. But honestly? I grew to love it. Being up before the majority of the world made for such a peaceful walk to catch the ferry. Watching the sun come up felt like a fresh start. Getting things checked off my list earlier made me feel more accomplished. And, finishing my workday before everyone else was an awesome bonus!

Do you agree with any of these? Which one?!

Looking for the perfect VA?

It isn't an easy feat. Your VA will be close to you, work with you, maybe know a few of your secrets, and probably have great insights into you, your business, and your clients.

Here are a few important points to consider when hiring for this very important role. 💡

As much as experience, skills, and a polished portfolio may be, finding someone who compliments you and your work style is key. Are they someone you'd gravitate towards?

👀 Where to even start looking for a VA?

Well, hello, I’m one. I’d say social media is a great start. There are many Facebook groups (Virtual Savvies, Canadian Virtual Assistants, CAVA) that have a great pool of candidates.

Ask around - do your friends own businesses? Do they have a VA who they swear by?

Do your research. Don’t get scammed! Look for a transparent social media profile (Facebook, instagram, LinkedIn), ask about reviews, ask about their portfolio. Call their phone number to ask questions and verify it’s a legit number. Ask for a video call.

Keep in mind security. Don’t give away your personal login details before you sign anything. Even after the fact, most VA’s will use password management systems like LastPass.

Trust your gut. If you feel like they’re not genuine, choose someone else. There are many, many qualified and dedicated VA’s out there to help you grow and learn.

How do you go from a dog trainer to a virtual assistant? 🤔

Pretty easily, if you're me (or have a lot of hustle)

I had my dog walking business, COVID hit, people were home and didn't need to pay me to exercise their dogs, so I moved into training services - mix of group classes and some online services. Second wave hit, training classes were shut down, so I moved to purely virtual classes.

Flash forward, I realize that training dogs through Zoom is extremely difficult because of the nuances, body language, and details in rehabilitating a dog and teaching their brains. I lost my passion for it through a computer.

Time for a pivot. 💡

Flash forward again, and I'm working as a social media manager with a local tourism organization and LOVING IT. I get to use my creative side (see, that Arts diploma DID come in handy), work from the comfort of home (much to my dog's enjoyment), and mould something that's my own.

My contract came to an end, and the next step was pretty clear to me. I wanted to do this, but on my own. On my terms.

Enter... me honing my skills as a creative whiz.

I took a "failure" as not a failure at all - it was a learning curve, and an opportunity to shift my focus, to pivot my mindset, and create something even BETTER. And I love that for me.

Welcome to my feed and my adventure - I'm happy you're here. 🤗

Are you making the most of your time on social media? 👀

It doesn't have to be endless scrolling.

Approach your platform with a PLAN of how to use it.

Want more engagement? Do these things every day. 👇🏼

1. Respond to your DMs, comments, and mentions! Don't just like a comment on your content, respond!

2. Reels Explore page - like and comment on Reels that resonate with you. Be genuine! Don't just spam the same 3 emojis over and over again.

3. People who follow you - like and comment on a handful of posts that make you smile. Cheer other small businesses on, congratulate someone on a milestone, be social!

4. People you follow - someone putting out great content? Like it, comment on it and thank them for the tips, and Save.

5. Hashtags - search for the hashtags you follow, and like and comment on posts that stick out to you.

❤️ Like if you're already putting these to use!

Do you have a favourite author? Favourite book?

Lullabies For Little Criminals by Heather O'Neill (shoutout to a Canadian author) has got to be mine. It's gritty, funny, and just stuck with me from the first time I've read it and every time since.
Being a bookworm, I'm always indulging in some reading. I find it's a quick way to shift my mood or decompress from a busy day.

STOP STRESSING ABOUT WRITING NEW STUFF.
Yeah, you heard me. Relax. Reuse. Repurpose! ♻️

Why repurpose content? Other than saving work and time for yourself, repurposing content is a great choice for a couple of reasons.

It reinforces your brand's messaging, gives you a chance to build off of posts that did really well (check your insights!), and hits audiences who may have missed it the first time around.

It prioritizes content that performs well, and meets your needs and goals.

When you think about recycling...

Ask yourself: what are your goals with this new content?

Goals could include:
✅ Raising brand awareness
✅ Driving organic traffic back to your website or blog
✅ Supporting leads

Ask yourself: is this evergreen content that could perform well at any time of the year, or is it time-constrained? When would be the best time to repurpose this?

Consider the media and where it came from, to determine where it's going. A video pulled from your Youtube may be way too long for an IG TV, but, could you break it into segments and turn them into Reels?

A blog post is too long for a caption, but is the blog post something you could pull 3-4 posts from?

The way you tell and repurpose the story is often as important as the story itself.

Like if you agree! ❤️

Maximize your output online.

Check out these tips for how to do that:

👀 Focus on Your Audience: Amplify your content pillars that resonate with your audience the most. Map their experience from inquiry to booking you, to see it from a consumer perspective and take note of
opportunities to improve.

🔮 Be Clear: There's the old saying, too many cooks in the kitchen. This goes for your content, too. Trying to get too many varied ideas out on your page can look like you don't have a clear strategy or alignment. Spread it out!

📋 Develop Your Guidelines: What is your booking flow?
What are your content pillars? What are your goals? What's your color palette, font palette, and visual brand identity? Are you participating in weekly trends and being consistent? Develop a content and engagement strategy, and stick to it.

🌱 Evolve: Be sure you're keeping up with current trends and changes to platforms. Regularly conduct an audit of your own content. You're your first customer! Outsource tasks and duties to assistants or professionals to keep your page sharp, updated, and targeted.

What are some tricks you use to be more efficient online? Share below! 👇🏼
