DID YOU KNOW: “Women in the U.S. who are pregnant or who have recently given birth are more likely to be murdered than to die from obstetric causes—and these homicides are linked to a deadly mix of intimate partner violence and fi****ms, according to researchers from Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.

Homicide deaths among pregnant women are more prevalent than deaths from hypertensive disorders, hemorrhage, or sepsis, wrote Rebecca Lawn, postdoctoral research fellow, and Karestan Koenen, professor of psychiatric epidemiology, in an October 19 editorial in the journal BMJ.”

“Who killed the Jacobs family?” is the question that has haunted Sacramento’s Upper Land Park neighborhood for 33 years.

The Jacobs were a typical American family, until one January morning in 1991, when they were brutally slain in the one place they should have been the safest– their home. Dozens of detectives have tried to crack the case, to untangle the rumors and speculation, but justice has yet to be served.

Their names were Mick, Marcy, and Jennifer Jacobs, and this is their story.

If you or someone you know has information about the Jacobs family homicides, call the Sacramento Police Department at 916-264-5471.

Special thanks to Laura and Lindsey from the American Girl Women podcast for joining us on this episode! Follow them and listen to our interview on their podcast feed. (The link is in our show notes.)

Traumatic events that may cause the anniversary effect include:

- The death of a parent
- A death anniversary
- Childhood trauma
- Sexual trauma
- A car accident
- A betrayal
- A traumatic birth
- A miscarriage
- A terrorist attack like 9/11
- A natural disaster
- Cancer or another serious health diagnosis
- A divorce
- The start of the pandemic

Why Do People Experience Anniversary Reactions?

Having anniversary reactions is common when someone has experienced trauma or loss on that significant date in years past. The memory and importance of that date can vary, but oftentimes the feelings that come with that particular date is what we refer to as the reaction. People experience this because their body and mind on some level remember what happened on that date, and it is an expression of whatever pain or agony someone may be holding on to.
