Beyond Venice there is Veneto. A short drive inland and a world away from the beautiful yet thronged city of Venice, the smaller towns of the Veneto such as Conegliano and Treviso are virtually tourist-free but equally welcoming. Full of surprises, Veneto’s countryside is a delight for wine lovers, walkers and cyclists and as the plain rises to meet the vertiginous slopes of the Prosecco Hills, classically genteel villas nestle among the vines and woodland. Time spent in this lovely region is always rewarding for landscape photographers and travellers alike.

Matera in Southern Italy is thought to be one of the oldest and most unique cities in the world! Sassi, cave dwellings carved into the limestone hillside over millennia, give a glimpse of the ancient way of life that was abandoned in the fifties. Since becoming a world heritage site Matera re-invented itself; Sassi became museums and hotels and the city became a movie set worthy of 007!

More than 100km upriver from the North Sea, the city of Hamburg has been a titan of maritime trade worldwide for over 800 years.
International commerce has shaped every aspect of the city, from the famous landing bridges of St Pauli, to the legendary Reeperbahn and the Speicherstadt, the world’s largest brick-built warehouse district. There's water; water everywhere here and the city goes all out for the Harbour’s “birthday” in May every year. The people of Hamburg will tell you that “nowhere does the sky shine as beautifully grey as it does in Hamburg” and when it gets cold here, it gets really cold. Icebreakers keep the River Elbe navigable and the trade flowing, even whilst they’re ice-skating on Hamburg’s second river, the Alster.

Nowhere is this more obviously fused than in the Reichstag Parliament Building. Yet despite its many monumental buildings such as the Brandenburg Gate and the Fernseheturm, Berlin remains a surprisingly low-rise city of human-scale neighbourhoods, well-connected by eco-friendly cycleways, and the German love of the outdoors can be satisfied on the nearby Wansee lake. With the wealth of Art and Culture to be explored on Museum Island and the counterculture that finds expression on the East Side Gallery, you'll still raise a sceptical eyebrow at Berlin's culinary masterpiece, the currywurst. Summertime in Munich is always sehr cool!
With its enviable sunshine record, the city cultivates the al fresco lifestyle along with its cultural attractions like the Nymphenburg Palace, the Deutsches Museum and the Endless Staircase. You can find a shady spot in the English Garden, surf the Eisbach, chill out in one of the city's many little biergartens or at the mother of all beer halls, the Hofbrauhaus. Summer's climax is the world famous Octoberfest, when some 7 million litres of beer are served. Munich is also home to Bayern Munchen and their very attractive football stadium, the Allianz Arena.

These chalk cliffs stretch between Seaford and Birling Gap and are one of the south east of England’s most iconic and impressive sights. The scenic eight-mile walk is part of the 100-mile South Downs Way, which also takes in beautiful Beachy Head.
