Make it funky!

Today begins our new music section on funk music.
Funk music is generally agreed to have emerged in the 1960's in USA from musicians who played Motown, R&B and Soul.
Not everyone agrees with this as D'angelo believes it came from Jimi Hendrix 1970 live album 'Band of Gypsies.

So, what is funk? Well, funk is basically when you focus on a simple bass groove with an energetic drum beat and the most important thing is that you put the emphasis on the first beat creating music you just wanna get up and dance too. Funk paved the way for rap and hip hop as well as drum and bass.

One of the undeniable pioneers of funk was of course James Brown so this is a classic JB funk track said to be the first ever funk song:

Sunday Soul - Teddy Pendergrass

Learning to sing at church, his dream was to become a preacher, but instead became a drummer of a local Philadelphia band but when he started singing, the rest of the group were so impressed that he was made the new lead vocalist. It was later during his solo career that Soul Singer Teddy Pendergrass achieved huge success with hits like 'Love TKO' and 'Turn off the lights' and was referred to as black Elvis as his popularity equalled that of Marvin Gaye and Barry White. sadly, after being seriously injured in car crash he never walked again and died aged 59 in 2010.

Sunday Soul - Gerald Alston
A lesser known Soul Singer, Gerald Alston was born into a religious family as he dad was a preacher and he grew up singing Gospel music. He joined Grammy award winning music group 'The Manhattan's in the 1970's and had success with songs such as 'Kiss and say goodbye' 'There is no one without you' and 'Blackbird'. Alston quit the group later to pursue a solo career but came back to join the Manhatten's after a few year's and continues to tour the USA and abroad to this day.

more to explore 1 - The Berlin Wall
Just a 40-minute drive from Wrocław will bring you to a most surprising yet, beautiful art installation in the village of Sosnówka near Twardogóra is the biggest collection of fragments from the Berlin Wall on the world assembled in a field in a large semi-circle. The idea came from a local dentist and it is completely free to visit and a great opportunity to take pictures of yourself next to the Berlin Wall.

More to explore 2 - Goszcz
Just a short 15-drive from the Berlin Wall you will come to the next stop which is the surprisingly interesting village of Goszcz with it's palace complex- once a beautiful palace and grounds with a large courtyard, these buildings were ravaged by Russian soldiers at the end of WWII but today the palace has been partly resurrected as a shell with stairs and a viewing platform built into the structure which shows off an impressive lake and picnic spot. You can simply drive in, park and walk around and it is really impressive.

More to explore 3 - Krośnice
Another 15-20 minutes away in the direction of Milicz, nestled in the Baryczą valley is the delightful attraction of a miniature railway. This narrow gauge track supports a steam engine locomotive which is something you rarely see these days and you and your family can take a ride from the specially built platform onto a pleasant track that winds through a large area of natural beauty.

Sunday Soul - Gladys Knight

Known as the 'Empress of Soul' Gladys Knight started her career at the tender age of 8 winning a TV talent contest and later formed the group 'Gladys Knight and the pips' which was signed to Motown records and the group regularly toured with Diana Ross and the Supremes. They had a string of hit songs including 'I heard it on the grapevine' (later covered by Marvin Gaye), 'Midnight train to Georgia' and 'If I were your woman'. Knight has won 10 Grammy awards and recording and sang the title track to the 1989 James Bond film 'Licence to kill'.

Sunday Soul - godfather of neo soul

Born into a musical family, Roy Ayers is a funk, Jazz and soul composer and vibraphonist who has helped to create the 'feel good' vibe in music and is widely considered to have shaped what we call neo-soul today, in fact he is the godfather of being soul. Ayers, uses a lot of jazzy - out there - chords but has an ability to create smooth Melodies and an overall easy, relaxing feel. With hits such as ' 'Searching' and ' Running away' Ayers has been sampled by rappers almost as much as James Brown.

Close to the town of Lubiąż you will find Odrzyska nature reserve which is a 5 hectare area next to the river Odra - a wetland with some rare species of water lilies and other water plants which is well worth a visit at this time of year and is a short drive from Wrocław.

Not far from Twardogóra is another small nature reserve - 4 hectares in size which combines peat bogs, heathland and a forest in the heart of the Twardogórskie Hills. The area is a biodiversity hotspot and hosts various protected species of plants and flowers as well as being a unique are of natural beauty.

Sunday Soul - Omar Lye F**k

This week we take a look at British multi-instrumentalist Omar Lye F**k - also known as just Omar or the king of neo-soul.

Omar was brought up into a musical family and is a classically trained trumpeter having studied at the prestigious Guild hall music school in London. As composer and arranger of music, Omar has worked with many great artists including Stevie Wonder and won best Neo-Soul act in the Urban music awards 2006.

The song everyone knows him for is the classic 'There's nothing like this, which was his biggest hit. Let's take a listen:

Sunday Soul - Etyka Badu

Referred to as the Queen of Neo-soul, Eryka Badu hails from Dallas, Texas and she was first recognised as a vocalist when she opened for D'angelo in 1994 which led to a record deal. Three years later, she made her debut album 'Baduizm' which reached no.1 in the album charts. She is often compared to Billie Holliday vocally and is visually district for her eccentric style.
Today we are going to play a track from the 2010 album - New Amerykah Part two (Return of the Ankh).
