Took a trip to Gelsenkirchen earlier this month to watch FC Schalke 04, a club on the brink in a city that badly needs it.

Debts due to poor mismanagement, Covid and the war in Ukraine have left the club on the brink of extinction. If they can’t prove their sustainability in the event of relegation from the second division this year, which thankfully looks unlikely, they’ll have to start again in the regional leagues.

I found out just what that means, for BBC Sport.

RB Leipzig’s Dominik Szoboszlai will join Liverpool after they agreed to trigger his €70m buyout clause before it expires at midnight.

Newcastle were interested but the deal for Sandro Tonali meant they couldn’t afford to push for him so quickly. Announcement soon. Story on BBC Sport.

Liverpool are set to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai for 70m euros (£60.1m).
