Bulleit 12-year-rye. This bottle of Bulleit is not your everyday bottle of Bulleit. This is a release worth trying. If you like rye, you will really enjoy this. If you don’t like rye, you should still try this!

American bourbon whiskey drinkers owe thanks to the many Scots-Irish that came to America and brought their knowledge of distilling with them. Many were farmer-distillers in their homeland’s and many became farmer-distillers here in America. More than a quarter million Scots-Irish Ulstermen and Ulsterwomen came to America during the 18th century. Their contributions are numerous. We wish their descendants a Happy St. Patrick’s Day. “ May you have all the happiness and luck that life can hold, and at the end of your rainbows, may you find a pot of gold”
Old Overholt straight rye whiskey is one of the oldest whiskey brands in America. Originally from West Overton Pennsylvania and now produced in Kentucky by Beam-Suntory. The Old Overholt brand has been available almost continuously since 1810. Available in 86 and 100 proof releases. When rye whiskey fell out of favor, Old Overholt was still a national brand. If you enjoy rye whiskey, this historic brand can be considered one of the foundation whiskeys in America. The gentleman featured on the label is Abraham Overholt son of the founder Henry Oberholzer.
The Beam Company began offering whiskey decanters in the 1950’s. One of the earliest pieces was a bowling pin with a wooden top. The white stoneware version was released in the 1970’s and 80’s. This decanter has special meaning to me as I entered the bowling business in 1981. The decanter held 10-year-old bourbon at 86.8 proof. I hope you enjoy this bottle dating back to a time when bourbon was not an easy sell.
The third bottle I purchased in Louisville was an Evan Williams 12-year-old bourbon. Not only is it named after my 7th generation cousin, twice removed, but the color and flavor of this release is amazing. Originally made for the Japanese market, it is sometimes sold at the Louisville Evan Williams Experience. Great bourbon with a significant history made by Heaven Hill.
A great night of tasting some very interesting products from the MGP Distillery. Based in Lawrenceburg Indiana, this distillery is responsible for some great brands of rye and bourbon whiskey. If you have not sampled these, you should seek them out. Pair them with the great food and ambiance of Charlie’s Still on Main and you have a perfect bourbon night.
Another great purchase is this bottle of Blanton’s Black. This “Takara Black” edition has been available in Japan since 1994. It is approximately 8 -years-old and 80 proof.
During my visit to Louisville I was able to purchase 3 very unique bourbons. All difficult to find. The first is this 12-year-old Wild Turkey Distillers Reserve. A beautiful Kentucky Straight Bourbon with a finish of chocolate and citrus. It is a wonderful whiskey from Wild Turkey. Of course, this bottle did have to fly across the Pacific. I am very happy to have found it.
It was a wonderful night hosting a bourbon tasting at Watch Hill Proper in Louisville. We were awed by their bourbon selection. I lost count at 1900. Seeing my friends from Michters. The local Norton Commons neighborhood is wonderful. Overnight lodging was at the amazing Chateau Bourbon.

Really lucky to find the Old Carter and a now discontinued William Tarr. Looking forward to sampling the Three Chord cask finish.
Recently I was doing some bourbon shopping and ran across these five bottles for sale. Four of them say “ASK” on the price tag. I was always told that if you have to ask for the price, you probably cannot afford the item. Great bourbons all for sale in one place, you have to love bourbon shopping in Kentucky!
The iconic water tower at Buffalo Trace Distillery has recently had a face lift. It is a memorable landmark for anyone that has visited the historic Frankfort location.
On a frigid January day at Buffalo Trace Distillery we were able to meet up with our good friend Freddie Johnson. Being able to spend time with my video partner Charlie and Freddie made the grey day a little brighter. Sharing a bottle of our Stagg barrel pick….priceless.

Happy Repeal Day! Did you know that Detroit’s second largest business during prohibition was the illegal distribution of alcoholic beverages from Canada to the United States. Michigan was the first state to ratify the 21st amendment on April 10th in 1933. The state of Mississippi did not end prohibition until 1966. Enjoy a drink with friends and celebrate 90 years of post prohibition freedom.
