The House of Lords will today debate the Trophy Hunting bill which the Commons passed earlier this year. Several pro-hunting Lords are seeking to SCUPPER it. They must NOT thwart the will of the people.

Remember: this bill was passed UNANIMOUSLY at EVERY stage in the Commons - Second Reading, Committee stage, Report Stage & Third Reading.
It is backed by 9 out of 10 voters.
It was officially announced by the late monarch in the Queen’s Speech.
It is an election manifesto commitment of BOTH the governing Conservative Party AND the opposition Labour Party, and is supported by MPs of ALL parties.
Moreover, it is backed by 85% of the staggering 44,000 stakeholders that took part in the government’s extensive public consultation exercise - including wildlife conservationists and African community leaders.

For a handful of unelected Lords to now block the bill would be nothing short of an outrageous assault on democracy itself. It would create a constitutional crisis the likes of which has not been seen in Britain for many years.

The debate starts at 10am today (Friday 16 June). With the anniversary of the killing of Cecil the lion just 2 weeks away, let us hope the Lords do the right thing.

Joanna Lumley says British trophy hunters are the “lowest of the low”.

She is backing the bill coming to Parliament next month.

She called trophy hunting an “utterly grim and cruel industry”

“Weasel words and twisted evidence will try to show the benefits of this hateful past-time. But, killing animals for fun is disgusting.

“Virtually everyone agrees that allowing people to bring home animal trophies from hunting holidays should be banned at once.

‘It isn’t sport, it’s cruel and cowardly.’

Dame Joanna urged MPs to back the bill, which has cross-party support.

“We have a responsibility to help protect wildlife. Trophy hunting is helping drive endangered animals to extinction.

“Anyone who makes excuses for these people should hang their head in shame.”
