I tried to use the QoL option of Focus mode as toggle instead of holding it. My thoughts is that it's not for me. Why? It's because whenever I want to run I still need to press L2 again and my muscle memory is trained on letting all buttons go and press Sprint (R1). Maybe I got used in Fighting games so the preset option works for me and I am currently using lance. Holding L2 or R2 (for guard) works like a rhythm or pace for me.
