The Holiday Season is not Always Joyful

It’s hard to picture sorrow and pain during Christmastime. But recently I have witnessed many feelings of grief and loss in people I care about due to the sudden death of a loved one, financial challenges, health struggles, and loneliness.

I am so grateful to my friend Tiffany (guest from episode 86) who recently reminded me the importance of being aware of those around me who may not be enjoying the holidays as we imagine everyone should. For that reason, I wanted to share this short, but important, bonus episode of Thriving With 8 Podcast.

Please share not only this episode with others, but also the light and joy of the Christmas Spirit. What can you do to help a child, parent, or family in your life THRIVE this holiday season? 🎄

PS- If you haven’t listened to the last Thriving With 8 episode with Tiffany Papageorge about grief, loss, and I invite you to listen 🧡

As parents, we are in the business of building relationships with our children. We're in it for the long game. What will help us most is approaching parenthood with a stewardship mindset rather than one of ownership. explains the difference beautifully in this episode of Thriving With 8.

An ownership mindset can destroy relationships and lead to comparisons and guilt. The stewardship principle, however, allows for growth to happen, strengthens relationships, and builds trust. It allows for simple things such as changing diapers and playing legos to be sacred experiences and reminds us that as we serve our kids we are serving God.

Is screen time keeping your kids from being participants in life? Do they suffer from "virtual autism"?

In this episode with Nicole Rawson from Screen Time Clinic we discuss how our children's behavior and feelings are being affected by their relationship with screens, particularly gaming. 🕹️

Because children's brains aren't fully developed until age 25 it is hard for them to self-regulate and addictions can start at a young age. 🧠

As parents, we have the responsibility to be educated so we can recognize risk factors and protect our kids. When we know better we can do better!

I don't know about you, but our family LOVES playing games together! It is a source of fun and strengthens our relationship as a family, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

The Beck family feels the same way! That's what led them to creating (many of which games our family has spent MANY hours playing). Grandpa and Grandma Beck share a love of people and game playing. It was such a delight to visit with Grandma and Grandpa (Brent and Tauni). I know you’ll love them too!

In this episode we discuss the benefits of playing together as a family and the many life lessons that can be learned playing games, including learning to be happy for someone else when they win.

With my oldest son recently engaged 🎉🥰 I have been thinking A LOT about marriage! What advice should I give him? What do I think has been the key to a happy marriage? What kind of example have my husband and I been that will serve our son well in his relationship with his future wife?

I was reminded that last year my cute hubby and I actually recorded a Thriving With 8 Podcast episode together where we shared our perspective on Creating & Maintaining a Thriving Marriage (episode 70). Maybe I should just have my son listen to that episode. ;)

If you were going to share advice with your kids on the topic of creating a thriving and happy marriage, what would you say? I encourage you to take some time to ponder on the example you are setting and what you will/would share with your child (or maybe grandchildren) in the future. They grow up so fast and wedding days will be here way too soon!! 💒

Hope you have a wonderful day celebrating with the people you love the most- your family! ❤️

Talking about all of the dangers our kids can encounter online often feels scary and overwhelming. In this episode, Marilyn Evans reminds parents of the importance of getting off the fence and talking to our kids about the dangers of po*******hy. These conversations need to be layered and age apporpriate, but we cannot wait. We want to be our kids seach engine when it comes to navigating technology.

As we strategize with our kids, they will be better prepared to make good decisions that support our family's values. And even though they may climb over the fence or peek through every now and then, if we have open communication our children will know they can talk to us and we can work through challenges together.

Most children learn to say "please" and "thank you" at a young age. But what does it mean to have good manners as a teenager and why is that important?

Having good manners such as pitching in, introducing yourself, and being a good passenger have long-reaching effects. Teens with manners have more confidence and others enjoy being around them. So how can you teach manners to your teens?

In this episode, discusses the wonderful resource she has created, " 52 Modern Manners For Today's Teens", that makes it easy and natural for teens to apply these tips into their lives.

There is something so satisfying about pulling out a w**d and getting the whole root- I love that feeling!! Not only does the ground look better, but I know that particular w**d will not grow back.

While w**ding this summer, I’ve thought about how this applies to motherhood. When our kids have “w**ds” in their lives, we often try to pull out those w**ds. As we try to get rid of the w**ds, we often think things are better because things LOOK bette. Maybe they start doing their homework, stop yelling, or come home before curfew. On the surface things look great, but underground there still may be resentment, anger, or frustration that is still growing.

The problems return, however, if we haven’t pulled out the root. Are we getting to the root of the problem, of the behavior? taught in Thriving With 8 episode 47 that “behavior is communication” and that thought keeps coming back to me.

If we try to change the behavior without understanding the root cause of that behavior, then true change will not happen. The problem will keep returning. So my challenge to you (and to me) is to strive for true understanding of your child’s behavior (which is easier said than done!!) so you can feel the satisfaction of pulling out those roots and seeing real, lasting improvement.

My mom and I took some of the grandkids to the gardens today. When we set out to see Dinosaur Island and feed the fish, we didn’t anticipate the beautiful experience that would follow…

When we got to The Light of the World Garden the kids started singing songs about Christ at many of the statues. It was so sweet to listen to these cuties spontaneously testifying of the Savior through song.

When we got to the first vision statue, “This is My Beloved Son”, they asked us to play the beautiful song “My Own Sacred Grove” written by so they could sing along.

As they sang we all felt so much joy, love, and peace. It definitely became our own little sacred grove, a piece of heaven on earth. ❤️

So thankful for my amazing kids, nephews, and nieces who reminded me today that you can “stand as a witness of God at all times, in all things, and in all places” and how quickly music can bring the Spirit of God into your day. 🎵

Not gonna lie, this was a happy message a couple weeks ago-a Thriving Mom Moment!

My word for 2022 is “present”. The year is halfway over so it’s time for a self-evaluation. I’ve been trying to be present this summer. Which means my website still isn’t complete, I haven’t sent any email updates, and have no new podcast episodes to post.

But… it also means I’ve enjoyed some girl time watching a fun series with my daughter, have taken my kids swimming multiple times, have played lots of card games with my family, etc.

Summer goes by way too quickly and I am trying to treasure this time with the kids at home! Hopefully you are enjoying summer with your kids as well! Part of being PRESENT means putting down your phone and connecting with the people around you.

How are you doing with your word/theme of the year?

Listen to Thriving With 8 episode 68 “Parenting in the Present” for more on this topic.

Summer break brings so much fun… it also brings missing kids as the wander the neighborhood!!

It makes me happy when the neighbor kids are all our playing, but drives me crazy when I can’t locate mine. Anyone else relate?

Our watch has been so handy to help keep track of the kids. They can easily call or text me to let me know if they change locations (assuming they remember 😉) and I can contact them or locate them on the GPS, if needed.

If you’re looking for a safe easy way to keep track of your kiddos this summer, the COSMO watch is a great option!

Highlight of the day has been watching my entrepreneurial son run his lemonade and brownie stand with his friends.

They’ve been out here for 2 hours and have had great success. I’m always humbled by the generosity of people and their “keep the change”. His hard work paid off and I was happy to see him share his profits with friends.

Best moment was right at the end… I had walked down to check on them. They only had one cup left when a sweet teenage boy stopped and asked to buy 2 cups. I could see my son thinking and was impressed with his problem solving.

He asked the teenager to drink his first cup quickly and then he would refill his cup. The teenager kind of laughed, quickly gulped down the lemonade, and returned the cup for a refill. 😂❤️

These are the types of days summer break is made for! ☀️

In November 2018, Jennie Taylor and her family received the devestating news that her husband Brett had been killed in Afghanistan by friendly fire. That was the beginning of her family's change, but not the beginning of their American service and sacrifice.

So what are we doing to teach our kids to remember those who sacrifice their lives and time for our freedom? Listen to Jennie share her ideas, as well as her wisdom & heart about mothering with resilience amid hardship.

I hope you will listen to this important message on your favorite podcast platform or through the link in my bio. 🇺🇸❤️

Happy Mother’s Day!! ❤️🌺

I know many moms struggle with Mother’s Day, some because of “mom guilt” and feeling they aren’t good enough.

But you are good enough!! Please remember that God is by your side and has confidence in your ability to mother the beautiful kids He sent your way.

When you are faced with feelings of guilt or imperfection, please ponder on these wise words my amazing dad gave in a Mother’s Day talk back in 2008:

“Remember that you are not expected to be perfect. Both the Spirit and Satan will work with you to help you see where you can improve, but they come at it very differently. Satan will point out your imperfections and fill you with discouragement, despair, and depression telling you that you are of no worth. He will fill you with darkness.

The Spirit will point out areas to improve, but will fill you with hope, encouragement, and light. When you see a weakness in yourself, learn to recognize the source of your feelings and respond appropriately.”
- Bart Mangum

It’s all about progression, not perfection. Don’t beat yourself up over your weaknesses. Give yourself grace and keep moving forward. God loves you and so do your kids!

May your Mother’s Day be filled with light as you allow yourself to be celebrated and recognize the great privilege it is to be a mom. ❤️
