3rd Episode of A Colorful Life with Keiko Roy-Carey
Do you remember Tumblr? 10+ years ago I came across the most enchanted European photo diary, only to soon discover a kindred spirit of mine was living in Austria. In this episode, Vicky talks about university in Austria, discovering new passions and finding meaning inside the pandemic. You’ll hear us talk a lot about falling in love with change and the art of embracing the unknown. I believe this conversation is a timely one as we sort through how the pandemic will have changed each and every one of us. It is a truth we will be forced to come to terms with. If you're feeling like you're at a precipice or trying to decide on a big life change, Vicky's story holds a lot of insight as she offers wisdom birthed from her lived experience. When I met Aske, he was 19 traveling and figuring out what he wanted to do with his life post high school. There’s just some people you meet in life who have a magnetic energy about them. Aske is one of them for me. 7 years later, we played catch-up on all the life in-between.
We also reminisced on some wild memories, like the time he was peer pressured into visiting a stranger in Korean jail.
I can’t wait for you to hear the full convo.

These past couple of years has a lot of us thinking about the people in our life. What value do they add and how do they shape us?
Part of growing older is gaining the autonomy to choose with whom we share our time, heart, resources and self. But how do we intentionally choose our friends? Where do we even find our people? And once we do, how do we build relational depth?
When I think about my life, so many faces come to mind, faces of people I’ve met in different seasons and in many corners of the world. It is their very existence that has made mine worthwhile.
When our life reel flashes before our eyes, we’ll see that relationships were at the center of our story. Are you choosing your cast well?

A few weeks ago, I went glamping with some friends. It was such a peaceful time, and it felt so good to get out of the city and breathe in clean(er) air.
We sat by the pool talking and then by the fire as we made s’mores (unheard of on this side of the world). It felt easy, like the days were long and time didn’t hold much weight.
I spent my Uni years in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina, often camping, day-hiking, or lazily riding down a river. Those moments felt endless as I was living them, but so much life has been accumulated since.
This weekend spent in the Korean countryside, doing a lot of nothing, was a nice reminder to be still more often. There wasn’t an ounce of anxiety, comparison, a feeling of lack— only abundance.
Surrounded by lush trees, layers of mountains and countless clouds. I even saw a few stars, which felt like a kiss on the cheek.
And then I had this thought: I am made of the same stuff as nature. It can only be that I too am abundant.
You dear reader, are abundant. When you start to believe it, you’ll see your abundance everywhere.

These days you can see the American flag flying along side the Korean. The two countries are worlds apart in so many ways, but ideology seems to bridge the gap (for some) where culture and language divide.
As I watched Wonjae cast his ballot in the historical 2017 election, after the impeachment of his former corrupt president, I thought of my own country. It seems so foreign to me after so many years away. The day-to-day living is a feeling I no longer remember—How does one resurrect the forgotten?
Somewhere in the collecting of homes around the world, I’ve seem to have slowly lost the very first home I’ve ever had. And there’s this sense that it was never really mine to begin with.
If we find ourselves with a desire that nothing in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that we were made for another world. -C.S. Lewis.
For those of us who are abroad for extended amounts of time, or simply do not feel at home in our own land, do you also experience this feeling of ‘homelessness’?
