Lake Arrowhead, Grass Valley area, Prescribed Burn Today
2/20/23 - The San Bernardino National Forest (SBNF) Mountaintop Ranger District will be conducting pile-burning operations today weather and environmental conditions allowed. Operations will begin around 9:00am and continue until approximately 5:00pm. There is a plan to burn approximately 10 to 15 acres. This will be occurring in the Grass Valley area on the west side of Lake Arrowhead. Residents and visitors will see flames and smoke visible throughout the day and evening. Firefighters will be monitoring the area until all piles are extinguished.
Prescribed fire plays an important role in forest health and in reducing extreme wildfires and their negative impact. These fires also help reduce heavy fuel loads while simultaneously opening the conifer forest structure and maintaining the health of meadow habitats. Fire is also used to enhance native plant communities and cultural landscapes and improve wildlife habitats. Another goal is to provide defensible space for communities and developed areas within and surrounding the SBNF. With all fire comes smoke, and the U.S. Forest Service work to mitigate smoke impacts from prescribed fires on the communities in the area.

At 7:21 pm Friday October 7, 2022 a call went to 911 of a solo vehicle crash, landing on its roof. A truck with five occupants was traveling in the downbound lane on Hwy 138 from Crest Forest Drive when for unknown reasons the driver crossed the double yellow lines, went up the mountain side and came to a crashing halt on its roof. Driver was not intoxicated. One of the five occupants has a minor injury. Accident is under investigation by CHP.
Update: Fire is out. Multiple engines have been released. Remaining are in mop up mode. Bulk of fire knocked down at one unit, checking for extension. Reported Commercial Structure Fire 180 Grass Valley Rd, Lake Arrowhead. Townhomes/Condos. Thank you VP Fire Photography
Short video of #LaneFire retardant and water drops from earlier today. Fire off 1N09 and 330. First Responders reacted quickly and have kept the fire last mapped at 2 acres. They will remain on scene for a while extinguishing any remaining hot spots. Video provided by @VP Fire Photography
Here’s some great retardant and water drop video courtesy of VP Fire Photography of #manzanitafire Off of Hwy 330 today S/W of Running Springs. The fire is currently mapped at 27 acres, slow rate of spread, still saying 0% containment, crews will remain on scene throughout the evening.
At 11:18 pm Thursday night 9/22/22 a passerby called 911 to report a small fire starting on Hwy 18, downbound near mm 9.79, on the shoulder with a vehicle next to it. VP Fire Photography happened to be at the bottom of 18 near 40th uploading video from a completely different incident to a broadcast news station when we heard the call over scanner radio. He quickly got to the scene and discovered a small bottle on fire. The reported vehicle was gone. The bottle appeared to be the size and shape of a rubbing alcohol bottle with an unknown liquid burning. VP stayed on scene making sure the flames didn’t get into the vegetation, waiting for First Responders to arrive. With his experience as a previous USFS fire fighter, it was determined with calls to 911, for safety, to wait for ME25 to arrive on scene and determine what was in the bottle while keeping an eye on the vegetation. Once ME25 with San Bernardino County Fire from Crestline arrived, they extinguished the bottle fire and could see an egg and what appeared to be a lime or lemon inside the bottle. It was not determined exactly what the liquid was, the fire was small and extinguished. We’re writing this to encourage “See Something, Say Something “ by calling 911. Watch mile markers while driving, try to get descriptions of people and/or vehicles. The vegetation towards the bottom of 18 is much dryer than up here currently. We are expecting rising temperatures which could lead to more vegetation drying out. Please be on the lookout for any suspicious activity or signs of fire.
Update: 9:23 pm Forest Shade Roadway Clear, use caution driving through there as they’ve done a lot of cleanup but may be a bit slick still. All occupants and two puppers got out shaken, but are safe. This was the scene on Forest Shade in Crestline. Thank you VP Fire Photography for this video.
Update: 4:53pm Multiple water drops and hand crews are hiking down. Everything is going very well. A few tree fires have been reported in the same area. Requesting helicopter water drops. Small veg fire, units on scene can handle, cancel balance. Updated location is 23xx block of Deep Creek Dr. Running Springs: Lightning snag approximately 1 mile east of Heaps Peak, units enroute.
10:05 pm ROADWAY OPEN! This incident is closed. 9:45 pm possibly another 30-60 minutes for 138 closure, both directions. Continue to use alternate routes. 7pm Hwy 138 closed from Pilot Rock to Old Mill for approx 2 more hours. Fire knocked down and crews mopping up! 138 remains closed. Fire getting knocked down! Update: 138 CLOSED in both directions. Confirmed vegetation fire 🔥 Hwy 138 approximately 2 acres about 2 miles above Pilot Rock. Please move out of the way for first responders! Thank you VP Fire Photography for being on scene with us!!!
