Zinzi Minottโ€˜s work focuses on the relationship between dance, bodies, and politics. As a dancer, she seeks to complicate the boundaries of dance and the place of Black womenโ€™s bodies within the form. Her work explores how dance is perceived through the prisms of race, q***r culture, gender, and class.

Zinzi is interested in the space between dance and other art forms, and though her practice is driven through dance, the outcomes range from performance and live art to sound, film and video, dances, and object-based work.

OPEN CALL ๐ŸŒŸ

Be part of our next Supporters Issue! We invite submissions of visual artworks which consider the various elements of Crush: to break, damage, or distort in shape; to subdue; to press together; to have a brief or intense infatuation for someone.

We will consider visual works in mediums applicable to digital presentation, such as moving image works, digital illustration, or photography. You can see the types of work Stillpoint Magazine publishes by reading past open-access issues here. You are welcome to get in touch with Art Director Kate Holford before submitting, should you be unsure whether your work would be suitable for this context. You can email her at [email protected].

You can submit by sending a selection of images or a link to a video, along with a brief description of the work (up to 350 words), and some info about you/your practice, to Kate via [email protected].

Selected works will be featured in our next issue for Supporters, due out in December.

In everything we publish we emphasize the work of those historically marginalized in institutional settings and in publishing. We specifically emphasize the work of emerging artists in our Supporters Issues. Everyone is welcome to submit.

Paola Estrella is a multimedia artist born in Mexico City and based in London. Auto-fiction and self-discovery are central to her practice, through which she conveys notions of intimacy, desire, and becoming. Estrella explores how new technologies impact the public and the private spheres and reflects on how the imaginary influences social conventions, gender, identity, and our notion of reality. Her work shifts across mixed media, video, installation, and performance as she dives into the blurred limits between the external and the internal world.

"There has always been kinship and conversation between cinema and psychoanalysis. Images tasted, of the eyes, of the tongue; the screens of the moviehouse and the analystโ€™s office not only teach of the self and desire, but what the self and desire could become. They are organs of illumination."

โ€œThe West is not in the West. It is a project, not a place.

Based on oneโ€™s vantage point or cultural expectations, the significance of a place can become lost. The West as a colonial project, produced descriptions of the โ€œAmericasโ€ as new land, a new world, while actively destroying and uprooting evidence of ancient history. One example of this can be seen in the defacement of ancient effigy mounds throughout Wisconsin. Hundreds of massive, shallow mounds depicting birds, lizards, men, panthers and snakes blanket the landscape. Many of the ancient mounds have been destroyed, dissected by roads, or flattened by settler farmers.

Exit is a print about absence and propagating presence. A potential exit can represent a fear. Within Indigenous communities exists a deep-seated fear of losing cultural practices, languages and art forms. With this in mind, Exit is also a print about that fear. Specifically, the print references ancient Indigenous creations (Man Mound of Baraboo, Wisconsin, mica hand/talon forms of the Mississippian peoples) that have been falsely attributed to non-natives, lost tribes and extinct peoples.

Because prints are editioned and produced in multiple they have the ability to make a single image diasporic. This inherent quality of the print is my sigil for warding off loss. The imagery of this print represents an attempt at reparative presence for the space between the Twin Cities and Chicago, the lands of several Anishinaabe tribes, Dakota and Ho-Chunk people. This print is meant to be a sigil for the thought forms of those who travel I-94, the road that cuts through mound country.
