๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ค๐ต envisions a study of information and communication technologies exploring African divination systems, the fungi underworld, ancestors communication and quantum physics to (re)think our information conduits. Overcoming the organism-spirit-device divide, this work explores spiritual connections as communication networks and the possibilities of decolonial technologies.
๐๐ณ๐ฆ๐ฎ๐ช๐ถ๐ฎ ๐๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ฏ๐ฆ๐ค๐ต investigates the cybernetic spaces where the organic, technological and spiritual worlds connect. How can we use biological or metaphysical systems to fuel technological process of information, control and governance?
Contrary to the Eurocentric-biased thinking, our information super highway might find its roots in African spirituality. Significant research attributes the birth of binary mathematics โ which is the foundation principle of computing sciences โ to African divination systems such as Ifa from the Yoruba people, of West Africa. We have much to recover in terms of connectivity and its potentialities.
As modern science just recently discovered the role of underground fungi networks used by plants to communicate and transfer information, ancient tradition have long known how to communicate with nature and download its knowledge. This study of dynamic networks from artificial, spiritual and biological environments digs into the politics of possibilities, where a techno-consciousness could nurture a mind-body-spirit-technology symbiosis.

From our archive: ๐๐๐๐๐๐ (2020), a video by Dagmar Schรผrrer.
The narrator in the moving image work ๐๐๐๐๐๐ is technology itself. The story is generated by an algorithm and offers an interpretation of an encounter of love and disappointment, by telling about the brief meeting of the two characters Touch and Long Swipe. Small deviations in the language and the narrative logic reveal our social imprint of how stories are expected to be told and how technology is programmed to follow these perceptions. The mise en scรฉne is a computer-generated galaxy of objects and images reminiscent of the organic, but dismembered and fragmented, reflecting on the possibility of creating new worlds and stories in digital space by following a subjective system of ordering.

The fourth chapter of the ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฆ๐ณ๐ง๐ช๐ค๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ๐ข๐ญ ๐๐ฐ๐ณ๐ญ๐ฅ ๐๐ต๐ญ๐ข๐ด project explores the idea of a future as a petrified past. In an accelerated geological time, centuries crystallize in a few months in the form of a city. This process is driven by the force of mystical rationalism, who has the power to embalm ideas and social structures so that they last forever.
Both the idea of a future as a petrified past, and that of a long-perpetrated apocalypse, permeate throughout the whole It explores how the social structures of colonial slavery in Brazil reproduce in a transfigured way throughout the centuries succeeding it. ๐๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ณ๐บ๐ด๐ต๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ช๐ป๐ข๐ต๐ช๐ฐ๐ฏ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐๐ณ๐ข๐ด๐ช๐ญ๐ช๐ข specifically explores the cycles that repeat within this: a new civilization is founded but is revealed to be the return of a past that never ended.

As with most sci-fi, itโs more about circumstances of the present than prognostication. We live in cataclysmic and catalytic times.
The game explores feelings of isolation within suburbia and an ambivalence about online connectivity as a mode of circumventing it. The opportunity to socialize in a disembodied way can be highly therapeutic. Nevertheless, neither the architectures of these spaces, nor the actors within them, are inherently benign.

From our archive: ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐โ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ (2019), a video by Nairobi based artist Syowia Kyambi โ paired with fiction by Monica Sanborn. ๐
Kaspaleโs Playground grapples with public memory, parts of which are not (yet) so public. Revisiting Kenyaโs recent history, Syowia Kyambi brings to the fore the many layers of violence that underpinned former President Daniel Toroitich Arap Moiโs twenty-four year rule in Kenya. The work came about as a need to engage with Kenyaโs post-independence era and a desire to dismantle a symbol of fear and oppression. The work investigates the oppressive nature of a regime in which Kyambi grew up, and which informed her sense of self during her most formative years. She selected Nyayo House as a focus as it is a strong symbol not only in her memories but also in todayโs time. Kaspaleโs Playground seeks to publicly claim both the remembering and the telling of this history in ways that are not mediated by a supposed shared national memory. With Moiโs recent passing this history has been white washed and made to appear like a peaceful and unproblematic President. This film is in remembrance of the victims of the Nyayo House torture chambers and honors the power and strength of the mothers involved in the 1992 protest.

The murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis by white police officer Derek Chauvin was an event that sparked a global uprising for Black Lives. Not merely a condemnation of individualized racism, this uprising targets global and local systems that haveโwithout explicitly naming the practiceโoppressed and killed Black people for generations, worldwide.
The burning of Minneapolisโs 3rd precinctโa police department with a long and well-documented history of white supremacist tiesโwas an event that symbolizes the dismantling of white supremacy and the honoring of Black life, while acknowledging the centuries of injustice that now necessitate a swelling up of righteous rage, not only in Minneapolis, but around the world.
This video depicts civil unrest, violent images and explicit language.

Two bodies move through a landscape of virtual and physical realities sharing their own perceptions and understandings around the behaviours, sources, and variable forms of judgment. How do we navigate our own judgements and allow ourselves to be judged? The motion and meaning of "pivoting" repeats itself throughout the video, implying the many-faceted, multi-layered versions of reality we can constantly be experiencing if we allow ourselves to perceive it that way. The characters go through lists of the different grounds one may judge on as well as the make-up of the material bodies we can base and center these values on. This video was made and inspired by conversations Andrea Garcia Vasquez had with Dimitra Ioanou over a one month period in preparation for our last publication. Some phrases and words come directly from those conversations and a Google Document the two shared while collaboratively discussing judgements. The voices are AI generated and the video footage is an assemblage of found footage, 3D animations made by the artist, and personal video documentation of Florida, where Andrea Garcia Vasquez often goes but does not really enjoy being.

๐ง๐๐ ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ ๐๐ฅ๐ฆ ๐๐๐๐ ๐ณ๏ธ by Iman Tajik ๐ค
The Dreamers (2020), that are set in a rural Scottish landscape referencing the historic Highland Clearances, explores the notion of the border and questions the value and role of nationality in a time of emergency. The Dreamers series was made during Tajikโs residency at Deveron Arts, Huntly as part of Tajik Bordered Miles project which was a day-long group walk from the centre of Glasgow to Dungavel House immigration removal centre, approximately 26 miles south of the city in June 2021. The flag was raised outside the Dungavel detention centre. An extension of Iman Tajikโs ongoing interest in making work for the public realm, the walk invites participants, both physically and virtually, to pay close attention to immigration detention centres, and the movement of bodies as a natural right of any species.
