Our new girl Cynder will not eat any dog food, she will only eat chicken.
If any of our friends have any canned food they no longer need we would love to have it to see if we can find something this girl will eat. She is happy but she has to eat something other than chicken.

Foods we have tried:

Pedigree chicken and beef pate’ and chunks in gravy

Purina ONE pate’ and chunks in gravy

Iams pate’

Hills I/D

Purina E/N

Not many people look at this happy face and know he spent 2,920 days outside in the Texas heat, with some scraps of food here and there (if he was lucky to get anything at all), being prone to so many dangers.

He wears his smile proudly after spending at least 730 of those days with a mass growing on the side of his face. The mass ended up weighing 3.5lbs once it was removed - but for nearly two years, he had to lug around a second head. The mass became severely infected and would actively bleed. The day he was rescued, he had a PCV of 6%. He was dying and wouldn’t have made it another day.

Behind this smile is a dog who endured cruelty at the hands of a human. Someone looked at him in desperate need of help and proceeded to shoot him through his mass. The bullet is still lodged in his left cheek. Perhaps they tried to end his suffering, but it was a failed attempt and only added to his life of being miserable.

But the unfairness didn’t stop there. Life had to throw two more things his way to try and break him; lymphoma and carcinoma. But Bear was happy and content through his treatments of chemotherapy all the way up until he reached remission. How could a dog go through all of this and still find it in himself to be happy and love life?

Bear, you are the face of hope. It’s been so wonderful to learn from you.

This past week was not unlike most weeks at Associated Humane Societies’ Newark location – a large intake of stray and owner surrendered dogs and cats. Among the 105 animals that came through our doors were two emaciated looking dogs, Jackie and Chloe. Unfortunately, this is not the first time we have dealt with this type of situation. Once examined by our veterinarian, each was placed with a medical foster so they could be in a warm home environment and be observed for any changes in their condition. While Jackie appeared to be stabilizing with the foster, I made the decision to transfer her to a rescue that we have worked with before and with whom the foster was affiliated. Chloe entered our shelter on Wednesday and went into foster that night. On Thursday, the foster contacted us to say that she was vomiting and having diarrhea. The foster brought the dog in and we sent the dog to an emergency outside veterinarian. I personally spoke with the outside veterinarian on Friday night. Their examination that night did not uncover any easily identifiable issue and lab work commenced to be sent out in the morning. Unfortunately, Chloe passed away on Saturday morning. I understand that it is easy to second guess other peoples’ decisions; however, I would ask that if you do have questions, you seek out the facts from those who know them. -CEO Jerry Rosenthal

An update on Chloe- after Chloe was rushed to an emergency veterinarian she was given immediate care. We are so saddened to update that unfortunately Chloe did cross the rainbow bridge. She is no longer suffering or in pain. We are heartbroken. 🌈 ❤️ Thank you to everyone who sent their well wishes and love.

Keep Chloe in your prayers! 🙏

Poor Chloe came to our shelter just 25lbs and is completely emaciated. We soon discovered the little girl isn’t keeping down any food- she was rushed to an emergency veterinary facility! Hopefully we can figure out what’s going on with this sweetheart. Send all your love and positive vibes her way!

If you can, please donate to Chloe’s care and others just like her by clicking the following link! This girl is worth every penny! ❤️

A baby moose had found its way to his doorstep and had collapsed there, injured and exhausted. The man was moved by the pitiful sight and couldn't help but wonder if she had found her way to him for a reason. He had n...

We all know the saying; a dog is a man’s best friend. But unfortunately, we also know that when it comes to humans, they can also sometimes not be exactly the perfect friend to dogs. And so, when one woman spotted a homeless man pushing what appeared to be a large cart full of stray dogs, she immed...
