22/10/2024

Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at 7:30pm, The Carl A. Rubino Hamilton at The Other Side series continues with “The Digital Mapping of New Forest & Peterboro Cemeteries,” presented by Sara Mohr, former Digital Scholarship Librarian, with Derya Arikan and Ella Strasser (Hamilton ‘26).

Over the past year, students and staff in the library at Hamilton College have been working to digitally preserve and highlight two historic cemeteries in the area: New Forest in Utica, and Peterboro Cemetery. Through this work, they developed strong community partnerships and created digital tools that allow community members to explore their local history.

This event is free and open to the public.

You can also read more informative and nonfiction works of Mohr’s titled, “American Paradigm: A Brief History of Utica’s Commercial Travellers Insurance” in our 2024 publication of “Doubly Mad.”

I don't often write about my experiences as a nurse, but from time to time, they do enter my poetry. This week, I've added a poem from Adding Saffron called "The Border," one of the pieces in my book which does deal directly with my work as a nurse in a hospital. You can check it out at the link below, and if you would like to order a copy of my book, it's available at:

I want to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has ordered a copy of my book, Adding Saffron, and for the encouragement from all of my friends. I'm really proud to say that poet John Balaban (winner of the William Carlos Williams prize for his collection Locusts at the Edge of Summer) read my book, and had this to say:

"What a pleasure to discover in Adding Saffron a poet with an ear for rhythm and eye for images, poems alive to a world he has us walking through line-by-line. These journeys in Welch’s poems—whether about a mouse in the attic, or a harmonica from WWII, or a vacant lot in Brooklyn where locals are growing vegetables—are always lit by poetic insight and compassion."
