ℹ️"Down with Romanticism: Recital 1869" is a groundbreaking project led by Canadian cellist David Eggert and fortepianist Gili Loftus. This collaborative endeavor showcases their experimental approach to rediscovering forgotten dimensions of 19th-century music, on two beautiful period instruments. In their first record together, Gili and David pay tribute to pianist Clara Schumann and cellist Alfredo Piatti, drawing inspiration from historic concert programs and crafting a truly unique recital program. To embrace the traditions of the 19th century, the album is released in three parts as a series of three EPs.

"In this EP, the second part of our recital, we give a nod to the eclectic and highly imaginative programming skills of our predecessors, with a special acknowledgement to those unique interdisciplinary cultural institutions – the musical salons – in which a plurality of art forms existed in dialogue with one another. For the generation of the romantics, the concept of the finality of a musical text was understood to some extent within a paradigm of “work as sketch/sketch as work”, and the artists of that era created during a time when the boundaries between the realms of literature, music performance, and theatre were more fluid and flexible." (pianist Gili Loftus)
Welcome to the most versatile and vibrant part of the recital. You hear celebrated masterpieces in historical arrangements for cello and piano made by 19th-century cellists Piatti and Hausmann, as well as the gloriously lyrical second movement from the young Clara Wieck’s piano concerto (which is in effect, a piano and cello duo), which according to some is rumored to have been inspired by Clara’s encounter with cellist Theodor Müller in 1835. Speckled throughout are Gili and David's own improvised interludes, a recitation of an excerpt from Alfred Lord Tennyson’s Idylls of the King: The Passing of Arthur and to cap it off, a rarely heard accompanied melodram by Franz Schubert on poetry by Adolf Pratobevera von Wiesborn.

When was the last time you heard a melodrama?
This one is by Franz Schubert.
Back from a long summer break, this autumn we are all DOWN WITH ROMANTICISM! Come follow us into the rich joint process of of two questing musicians — cellist, David Eggert and fortepianist, Gili Loftus — and stay tuned here for many great details about their record, about 19th century's musical life and of course a lot of well-known and rarely recorded repertoire - in a performance that is definitely refreshing for 21st century's ears 🤯
Starting next Friday, Backlash Music will release 3 EPs over the autumn, building together the album 'Down with Romanticism: Recital 1869'
The Down with Romanticism project is the culmination of over a decade of artistic collaboration. Following meticulous archival research and immersions into the soundworld of the early days of the recording era, they have embarked on an experimental approach to explore forgotten dimensions of playing 19th century music. Their first record together as a duo — Down with Romanticism: Recital 1869 — pays tribute to, and explores the legacy of two of the 19th century’s greatest artists: pianist Clara Schumann and cellist Alfredo Piatti. Drawing inspiration from historic concert programs of Clara Schumann, housed at Gili and David have crafted a unique recital program that features masterpieces in historical arrangements for cello and piano made by musicians of the Schumann/Piatti circle, speckled throughout with improvised interludes and rarely heard accompanied recitations like the here playing melodrama by Franz Schubert, as well as a Beethoven sonata.
Their performance showcases flexibility of tempo and rhythm, elasticity of intonation and pitch, generous use of portamento, flexible alignment of the pianist’s right and left hands and heightened individualistic expression like you’ve never heard before, but that were once standard for music of this era — all on two beautiful period instruments.

Violonist Mathieu van Bellen and pianist Mathias Halvorsen present an ambitious and first ever completly instrumental arrangement of Giaccomo PUCCINI’s entire opera LA BOHÈME.
The musicians have arranged the score themselves, bringing together the parts of the soloists, the choir and the orchestra into a hyper-virtuosic piece for just violin and piano. Recorded live in front of an audience, van Bellen and Halvorsen give everything they have; bringing forth each scene in an expressive and highly evocative tour de force.
“....Those who have experienced it will not soon forget the experience. The two musicians grab you by the throat from the very first moment." Sandra Kooke, De Nieuwe Muze
"Mimì and Rodolfo came alive before your eyes - Puccini was not often this close... As if he made up the music on the spot...“ Peter van der Lint, Trouw
Drawing on styles and techniques from Puccini’s contemporaries Kreisler and Godowsky, the musicians have strived to utilise a wide array of colours and textures. Ranging from intimate love scenes to buzzing streets filled with soldiers and children, the arrangement is meant not only to reflect Puccini's orchestration, but also to build the scenic imagery and bring the characters to life.
The project was initiated as part of the program BeBeethoven, investigating new ways of interpreting classical core repertoire. Inspired by the theatre company Forced Entertainment and their legendary stagings of Shakespeare, van Bellen and Halvorsen set out to find a new way to approach opera.
Even though the core philosophy initially embraced a ‘less is more’ attitude, the arrangement of the musical material soon leaned hard the other way. Committed to get every note from the full score into the arrangement, they flexed every creative muscle; often resulting in rather wild solutions. 🎧Coming out this Friday: Puccini's La Bohème - the entire opera in a stirring performance by violinist @mathieuvanbellen and pianist @halvorsenmathias
Even though the core philosophy initially embraced a ‘less is more’ attitude, the arrangement of the musical material soon leaned hard the other way. Committed to get every note from the full score into the arrangement, they flexed every creative muscle; often resulting in rather wild solutions. Another, similarly ambitious task, was trying to recreate the different characters and give them strong, audible personalities. The part of every character is performed by either piano or violin, and each is given a distinct colour and temperament.

'Mythos' by Max Andrzejewski is now available digitally on the platform of your choice. https://backlash.lnk.to/mythos
🎧 Here Max talks about the process of composing.
On the album: Journalist Sophie Emilie Beha describes: "Max Andrzejewski uses Wagner's 4 Ring overtures as a quarry. The original works do not serve to be edited, but at best to be blown up. Andrzejewski then selected a few from the rubble, which he melted down, solidified and deformed to the point of being unrecognizable."
"... convinces with dazzling tones, meandering motifs and a lack of bombast." taz (GER)
"with musicians hired from classical and jazz worlds Andrzejewski’s 21st-century group seamlessly integrates scored composition and improvisation using both acoustic and electronics." The WholeNote (CA)
"[Mythos] offers an extraordinary, fascinating, surprising and extremely original experience." Donos kulturalny (PL)
