“What is it to be musical?... you will be so if you can almost foresee in a new piece what is to follow, or remember it in an old one, - in a word if you have not only music in your fingers, but also in your head and heart.”

"Violinist Mathieu van Bellen and Mathias Halvorsen made a virtuoso arrangement of Puccini's La Boheme - the entire opera, yes, for piano and violin. Vocal playing, all the characters retained their own character: insanely successful."

'La Bohème' arr. and performed by Mathieu van Bellen and Mathias Halvorsen got a 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 5 star review in the BBC Music Magazine.
"Such [wizardry] is the emotional commitment of the two musicians, the sense of immediacy in the recording, and the lush, dynamic playing inspired by performers from Puccini’s own era such as Fritz Kreisler and Leopold Godowsky [...] Bravi, van Bellen and Halvorsen, for this ravishing achievement." Thank you Prof. Alexandra Wilson!
What an encouraging acknowledgement for everyone involved.

+++NEW ALBUM OUT NOW+++
https://backlash.lnk.to/boheme
Violonist Mathieu van Bellen and pianist Mathias Halvorsen present an ambitious and first ever completly instrumental arrangement of Giaccomo PUCCINI’s entire opera LA BOHÈME.
The musicians have arranged the score themselves, bringing together the parts of the soloists, the choir and the orchestra into a hyper-virtuosic piece for just violin and piano. Recorded live in front of an audience, van Bellen and Halvorsen give everything they have; bringing forth each scene in an expressive and highly evocative tour de force.

“....Those who have experienced it will not soon forget the experience. The two musicians grab you by the throat from the very first moment." Sandra Kooke, De Nieuwe Muze

"Mimì and Rodolfo came alive before your eyes - Puccini was not often this close... As if he made up the music on the spot...“ Peter van der Lint, Trouw

Drawing on styles and techniques from Puccini’s contemporaries Kreisler and Godowsky, the musicians have strived to utilise a wide array of colours and textures. Ranging from intimate love scenes to buzzing streets filled with soldiers and children, the arrangement is meant not only to reflect Puccini's orchestration, but also to build the scenic imagery and bring the characters to life.

The project was initiated as part of the program BeBeethoven, investigating new ways of interpreting classical core repertoire. Inspired by the theatre company Forced Entertainment and their legendary stagings of Shakespeare, van Bellen and Halvorsen set out to find a new way to approach opera.

Even though the core philosophy initially embraced a ‘less is more’ attitude, the arrangement of the musical material soon leaned hard the other way. Committed to get every note from the full score into the arrangement, they flexed every creative muscle; often resulting in rather wild solutions. Another, similarly ambitious task, was trying to recreate the different characters and give them strong, audible personalities. The part of every character is performed by either piano or violin, and each is given a distinct colour and temperament.

The project brings Puccini’s masterpiece to life in a new, transparent and more intimate way. In this marvellous opera the music and the story melt together in a uniquely poetic fashion. The aim is to spotlight these achievements, opening up the piece to an audience not normally invested in opera. This production wishes to tell, rather than show a story, and leans heavily on the power of imagination as a trigger for entering Puccini’s world.

If you already know Daniel Patrick Cohen's We Deliver, you know this quote is fun. The album is as gigantically gigantic as it is gigantically ungigantic.

And on it goes, time to unveil the cover of this, in many terms, extraordinary album. Tata!
Guess who made it? If you know some of our earlier releases you definitely have come upon artworks by him. But chances are high otherwise as well. There must be hundreds of record covers made by Dan Abbott to this day. Previous credits include covers for Muse and Pink Floyd. And still, his creative universe consists of so much more than this, as you can discover on
He became a long-time collaborator and a dear friend.

Dan A on the cover of We Deliver:

"The process was funny, surprising and very much led by coincidence and 'happy accidents’. This aligned nicely with the spirit of the album itself, following a loose set of rules but fully embracing chance happenings.

The design-journey began with a simple black and white ink drawing I’d done that Daniel really liked, starting a chain of events that led to a twilight photoshoot in East Berlin. Like a lot of my favourite covers I’ve worked on, this was very collaborative, which ultimately means I’d never have created this for someone else!

There's a lot going on in this image and, of course, all is not what it seems.

The music of We Deliver pushed me to explore some unexpected ideas and I love it when that happens."

++new album coming soon++
Daniel Patrick Cohen "We Deliver"
preorders are open. 🎧

We are happy to announce our new collaboration with Daniel Patrick Cohen who delivered an extraordinary extensive album to be released on September 16th, featuring 67 musicians on 32 miniature tracks, collected over the period of 7 years.
Daniel is a Londoner based in Romania with a range of musical interests, including film music and hip hop. He first garnered international attention when he was among a handful of composers invited to produce scores for Alfred Hitchcock’s silent films as part of the British Film Institute’s ‘Rescue the Hitchcock 9’ project. The resulting 90min score for The Pleasure Garden was published by Faber Music and performed at film festivals around the world.
Daniel's first album The Passenger was named after the Michelangelo Antonioni film of the same name, and was inspired by a David Lynch quote describing Barry Adamson's music being "like hearing Hitchcock films in your head". He has given seminars on his music in the
UK, Kazakhstan and Ukraine.

We are excited and very happy to announce our beginning cooperation with the British record label Orchid Classics and,
in this context, that we can provide distribution via Naxos Deutschland from now on to our artists.

It's been a year ago, when Orchid's founder and owner Matthew Trusler approached us with the idea of collaborating, after we have already worked together on the release of Wooden Elephant's album Kid A. Since then we had numerous talks together, that were particularly valuable because Matthew was and continues to be endlessly generous to us sharing his expertise and providing significant support.

Orchid Classics' story began in 2005 as a kitchen table project, as so often, in a small circle of friends who share artistic ideals and dreams. Travelling back in time with Matthew is inspiring and encouraging, since it can feel a bit like back to the Future for us. We would encounter many occurences that let us say 'Oh, that could be us now!' And it's just awesome to be able to ask somebody: What have you done back then?'

(2) It's little wonder for us, then, that Orchid's first release, entitled 'The Pity of War', is featuring Matthew Trusler, himself an superb violinist, with pianist Martin Roscoe on an album of sonatas from the years of the First World War by , and , combined with by Wilfred Owen The intensity and expressiveness of this recording lets you still feel the presence of a strong artistic vision that leads beyond an individual project.
(3) On one of Orchid Classics' latest releases, a album by pianist Edna Stern, the artist commited to the concept of an recording, an idea that Backlash has also explored deeply on its very first release (4), violinist Artiom Shishkov's album 'BACH 29-01-18'.

We are infinitely grateful and happy that we can call Orchid Classics our partner and we warmly recommend you to check out their rich and magnificent catalogue.

'Mythos' by Max Andrzejewski is now available digitally on the platform of your choice. https://backlash.lnk.to/mythos
🎧 Here Max talks about the process of composing.

On the album: Journalist Sophie Emilie Beha describes: "Max Andrzejewski uses Wagner's 4 Ring overtures as a quarry. The original works do not serve to be edited, but at best to be blown up. Andrzejewski then selected a few from the rubble, which he melted down, solidified and deformed to the point of being unrecognizable."

"... convinces with dazzling tones, meandering motifs and a lack of bombast." taz (GER)

"with musicians hired from classical and jazz worlds Andrzejewski’s 21st-century group seamlessly integrates scored composition and improvisation using both acoustic and electronics." The WholeNote (CA)

"[Mythos] offers an extraordinary, fascinating, surprising and extremely original experience." Donos kulturalny (PL)
