The Cobb Community Center, also known as The Little Red Schoolhouse has been opened as a warming center due to the ongoing issues with power outages and winter storm damage. The Mountain Lions Club is supporting the center, which will be open from 8 am to 6 pm till further notice. The County’s Behavioral Health Mobile Unit will be available with some cold weather items and support tomorrow. Showers will also be available between 9:30 am and 5 pm, thanks to Adventist Health’s Mobile Shower Unit. For updates on storm damage go to facebook.com/lakecountyoes.

These lovable companions, aged 8-9 years old, found themselves in our shelter after their owner passed away. Who is your hero??

We are asking our readers to nominate people for our first “Lake County Hero” feature.

Not all heroes wear capes, and we believe an overwhelming majority of the real heroes in our lives clad themselves in nothing more grand than cloaks of anonymity.

First, we’ll note that real heroes take on many shapes and sizes, and they’re usually a far cry from the perfectly sculpted action figures we grew up watching in the movies. Instead, in our eyes, our true heroes are many of the regular people we see doing regular things every day.

It might be the home health care worker providing much-needed companionship for our senior citizens, the firefighter or police officer putting his or her life on the line to keep the rest of us safe, or the Little League coach donating his time on behalf of our kids (while putting up with everything else that entails).

Here’s how to nominate: Just send an email to [email protected] and tell us who you’d like to nominate, and, most importantly, why. (Name only submissions are not accepted)

Our panel will select the finalist and will choose 1 winner to recieve a $500 prize.
