The biggest challenge posed by Kevin Brost and Ian Hampton’s Door County cottage? How to seat four to six diners in a house with the tightest of galley kitchens and no dining room to speak of. Architect Joy Peot-Shields suggested they flank a
long, tall, shallow dining table with a built-in banquette on one side and tuckable stools on the other.

Peot-Shields provided a tabletop slab of wood milled from a felled ash tree on her own Wisconsin farm. “They left one side alive, so you can see where the ash borer beetle infiltrated the tree,” Kevin says. Kevin purchased a counter-height base from a steelworker online. A local cabinetmaker designed the slender custom-made banquette.

We're taking notes.

"New isn't always better," says designer Hannah Guilford, who owns with her husband, Cody. The owners of this Fryeburg, Maine, kitchen loved its original character and yellow cabinetry. Guilford repainted the cabinetry, window trim, and other millwork in a buttery shade of yellow as a refresh that didn't lose original charm.

"The original yellow veered into beige before, making it feel flat," Guilford says. "This has the warmth of your grandmother's kitchen but with accents that make it the kitchen of a modern family." 💛🌼

When visitors approach Alexandra Eidenschenk’s house in New Marlborough, Massachusetts, they often wonder: Is this an old house or a new one? The confusion delights Alexandra. “I love that questioning,” she says. “I would describe my house as timeless.”

The house is technically new—finished in 2020—but it has the look and spirit of a one built centuries ago. ✨ See the rest of this home’s bridging of eras in the Summer 2024 issue of Country Home, out now.
