Wow, very damming of the council's position.
This is the official response from Plymouth Tree Partnership. PTP are a charitable organisation run by local experts in their field who the council engaged with to write their Plan For Trees. If the council really have received expert opinions, they won’t say who from.
“Plymouth Tree Partnership’s Trustees were not consulted about intentions for Armada Way and presume they follow from the Better Places proposals in 2018. The results of that consultation do not appear to be available and they should now be produced.
In 2019, the Council declared a Climate Emergency and adopted the Plan for Trees with the input of Plymouth Tree Partnership among other stakeholders. We are struggling to reconcile the disconnect between these two initiatives and the very significant loss of canopy cover being planned in Armada Way. The loss could well be permanent depending on the trees chosen and it is misleading simply to talk in terms of tree numbers.
The baseline tree survey report presents no evidence to justify the removal of almost all of the existing trees. The case must therefore rest on other factors but we have been unable to find the relevant documents and request that they now be made available.
Plymouth Tree Partnership’s Trustees consider that the aim to establish a grand but welcoming entrance into the city centre, with an urban park, more sustainable drainage and a clear visual link to the “sea” can be achieved whilst retaining many more of the existing trees. This option would be considerably less destructive and disruptive to businesses, and it appears not to have been considered. Without a rapid change of approach, we are extremely concerned that Plymouth will lose its reputation as a green city and could even become a second “Sheffield” in the eyes of others.
Plymouth Tree Partnership remains committed to engaging with Plymouth City Council to get more of the Right Trees in the Right Place and to help nurture them through our Tree Warden network. We believe communication and awareness-raising of the value of trees is essential and would request that PCC arranges an urgent public meeting to allow the people of Plymouth to find out more about the scheme and its merits and to contribute to a shared vision for Armada Way.
Kind regards - Penny Tarrant, Chair
Plymouth Tree Partnership”
