Art for art’s sake, or l’art pour l’art, is a philosophy that originated in France in the early 19th century that suggests the purpose of art is not to serve some higher moral, cultural, or political purpose; rather, the value lies in the artistic pursuit itself. This bohemian slogan inspired a movement advocating that art needs no justification.

On this episode of Purple Glow Pod, we chatted with the artistic director of Bloody Nails Cinema about creating for the sake of creating and allowing love of an art form to be reason enough to pursue it.

The holiday season is the perfect time to support local artists and artisans, but it can also emphasize the lack of diversity and inclusion that exists within the arts. As we are encouraged to shop and support local, it is also important to encourage diversity and amplify the voices of communities who are underrepresented.

To promote the discovery of the diverse artistic talents that exist within the city, we’ve put together a list of 15 talented Indigenous artisans based in Tkaronto, whose unique works celebrate Indigenous culture. You can find many of these artists at the Indigenous Art Market, hosted by ANDPVA.

Art Showcase & Market Performers ~ Rumi & Carlo

Rumi & Carlo will be performing Dissonant Waves this Friday!. The performance is an exploration of relationship and time, taking performers who play together in one context and radically changing the rules/relationship of their performance to see what will happen. It is an experiment which starts in a distant land and ends in familiar territory.

Rumi Jeraj is an ismailli muslim hailing from Sherwoodpark Alberta (the world's largest hamlet). He is curious about sound and text in dance performance. Over quarantine his practice has shifted from the studio to the outdoors and he has found joy in interacting with natural landscapes. During his professional studies at Ryerson University, he studied Contemporary dance with Louis-Laberge Cote, Kate Hilliard and Robert Glumbeck. Outside of contemporary dance, Rumi has trained in tap dance with Travis Knights and Dianne Montgomery. He has also traveled to various Tap festivals such as Tap City: NYC, Rhythm World: Chicago and Vancouver Tap dance festival to train with various artists. He has recently been exploring using his dance as an instrument and playing as a tap dancer with Jazz artists around the city.

Carlo Santo Domingo is a Toronto native, attending his third year of undergraduate study in York University's music program. He is currently taking electric and upright bass lessons with Artie Roth, and plays in various ensembles in the school's program. During the quarantine, he began busking in downtown Toronto, playing with various musicians during the summer months. He is also the bassist for the local jazz band, The Brunswick Boys.
