July 3, post-rain ride at our local trail.
Hey. Let's go for a ride. This here is The Adventure Biker page. Here you will find various ramblings & videos etc. about my bike rides & related stuff...
July 3, post-rain ride at our local trail.
Saw a rider with a non-functioning front brake on his road bike on this morning's road ride (front wheel was missing the disc rotor). This was among a group of other riders that typically moves along at 22-23 mph. Typical group of road bikers where riders draft off one another around 12 inches or so apart.
Approximately 80% of a bike's stopping power is in the front brake. Add to the fact that narrow road bike tires have a contact patch smaller than a penny, this guy definitely wasn't stopping on a dime if the need was to suddenly arise. Hope he gets that sorted out really quick like. Otherwise might want to reconsider participating in rides of this nature until he does.

Been fulfilling my role as the Tandem Adventurers captain on the tandem bikes a lot in the last couple of years and so I haven't been riding the single bike as much as I used to. I did get out on it however this past Wednesday for the first time in over a month at the weekly evening ride on my local trail at .
Throwback Thursday.
Way back. Way, waaay back.
From back in the day.
Way back.
In this current age of identifying as something you're not, I guess we can now add "Finisher" to the list. Just....wow...
I found this to be very interesting. I have some abstract thoughts about this but would like to know yours.

Shimano is warning against the tampering of its e-bike systems for more power, ascertaining that updates were made to the software to prevent this.
I have reached 500 followers! Thank you for your continued support. I could not have done it without each of you. 🙏🤗🎉
They were perhaps a "little easier"(?) but I guess my time(s) riding my bike from Orlando, FL to Athens, GA aren't too shabby by comparison...

Round the world cyclist Mark Beaumont is to attempt to win back his North Coast 500 bike record because it’s “hard enough for the outcome to be unknown”.

I've got some Blinker Fluid for sale too. 👍
A couple of years back I created a short intro to be inserted into the opening scenes of some of the YouTube videos that I've created. Toward the end of that intro sequence are the words "Peddling Adventure".
So I received the following comment (below) from a viewer on one of my YouTube videos earlier today. I just wrote a response...
I thought this was funny and just had to share.
Bit of a murky mess in e-Bike land....

DANA POINT, Calif. (BRAIN) — The closing session at this year’s Bicycle Leadership Conference was not the flashiest or the best attended. But it probably was the most sobering 60 minutes of the two-day conference.
THAT VIEW!!! 😍😍😍😍

Hey there friends,
Let's have a little discussion about a cycling topic that is sometimes a bit contentious for some: e-Bikes.
Now there are plenty of valid arguments out there both in support, and against, e-Bikes. The purpose of me writing this is not to expound on their pros and cons. Instead, I wanted to take a deeper look into the definition of an eBike, and thus how it is, or might be classified. Yes am fully aware of current and existing e-Bike classifications etc. Perhaps this could provoke a different viewpoint.
Please read the following article linked below. I won't go into any of it's details here - please read it for yourself:
https://www.bicycleretailer.com/industry-news/2022/03/25/injured-rider-sues-costco-and-e-bike-maker-over-right-front-brake-lever?utm_source=bicycle+retailer+and+industry+news&utm_medium=facebook&utm_campaign=ba1fb092-0263-4667-a0ad-4f30bd9faa7b #.Yj5FMmQpA0H
Now this is a very unfortunate incident for all of the parties involved - and the bicycle industry as a whole. There are no winners in this case. With that said I think there are a few things that we can observe and take away from this...
First of all if this isn't a strong indicator of how and where we should be purchasing our bikes, I don't know what is. Unless you're an extremely experienced and skilled rider AND and person with exceptional mechanical experience and skills (ie. someone with a thorough understanding of the physics of riding and also the physics of the mechanical aspects), your next bike should be purchased, assembled, set up, and maintained by people who are bike specialists. Ie. your local bike shop. Big box retailers and these new fangled direct to consumer sales channels really should be avoided. What might seem to be a really good deal initially could end up costing you way more going forward. In more ways than one...
But that's not the gist of what I'm getting to here. More importantly, what is an e-Bike? E-Bikes have motors and a power source. That means they are motorized bikes. No arguments there. Does that make an e-Bike a motor vehicle? Should they be classified as such? I've read a lot of discussions calling e-Bikes "power-assisted bicycles" while others are calling them basically the modern version of a moped while others yet refer to an e-Bike (regardless of current classification) as a motorcycle. Which is it?
Here's the deal. In the incident described in the article linked above there is controversy over the placement and operation of the front brake control. In my years of riding various motorcycles, I have yet to ride (or see) a motorcycle that did not have the front brake operated by a hand lever on the right hand side of the handlebar - just like the eBike in question in the article above, and others sold by this company. US law states that bicycles must have the front brake operated by a hand lever located on the left side handlebar. So again I ask: What is an e-Bike? Should this bike (and other e-Bikes) have been sold as a motor vehicle and more specifically a motorcycle? If this bike had been sold/purchased as a motorcycle and a similar (albeit unfortunate) incident occured, would there be a legal case here on the premise of front brake operation? Would there be a legal case at all? Should the current, existing classifications of e-Bikes be updated, or even changed?
What say you? I'd love to hear your thoughts.
SAN DIEGO (BRAIN) — An Arizona woman is suing San Diego e-bike company Phantom Bikes and Costco Wholesale for $6 million. Carol Penkert's suit claims her bike came set up so the right brake lever operated the front brake, which caused her to flip over the handlebar and sustain serious injuries. Su...
