GEZI PARK PROTESTS | Today marks the 5th anniversary of the occupation of Gezi Park in Istanbul, the anti-government protests that shook Turkey in 2013.

Ferdi Limani and Engin Güneysu were there to document events that became a symbol of resistance for a whole generation of Turks

Proof that the wounds are not healed yet, police have sealed off Taksim Gezi Park today and placed barriers in front of all entrances and exits of the park.

On May 28, 2013, a small group of environmentalists occupied Gezi Park, in Istanbul’s Taksim Square to stand against the plan for razing the park in order to build a shopping mall.

Following the extreme violence of the police response, protests spread to the whole country on May 31, 2013. What had begun as a small environmental protest became a national anti-government uprising.

During these events, 11 people were killed by the police, including eight youngsters, as more than 8,000 others were injured, dozens of them critically.

"Parties are a privileged place, a space for exploration, a time for fusion. Skin, saliva, sweat, sometimes an overdose of it - it’s the moment when sexual tension is opposed to a feeling of loneliness, and both are symmetrical and equally strong. When different social classes, sexes, and ages gather to seek human connection and loopholes in their own consciousness and social behaviours."

EXHIBITION | We are happy to invite you at the opening of Leica Gallery's new exhibition “A Room of One’s Own" in Istanbul on Thursday 22 March - 18h30 as Le Journal photographer Charlotte Schmitz is part of the show.

Photographers works of Meltem Isik, Charlotte Schmitz, Tahmineh Monzavi and Cansu Yıldıran will be exhibited from March 22nd 2018 to May 5th 2018.

The challenges that are addressed in the book “A Room of One’s Own” can still transcend today’s world view and are expressed through the works of four women artists in the exhibition. The artists are inspired by personal experience or by combining reality and fiction, just like Woolf. Each artist comes from a different part of the world and with her own photographic language, brings out obsolete values and the expectations that still trap women today.«

EXHIBITION | Le Journal's photographer Charlotte Schmitz is exhibited in Istanbul - A huge thanks to Daire Galeri and Cemre Yeşil who curated this group exhibition: “BECOMING: Cure as Care”

Friends in Istanbul, come for the opening: 17.03.2018 at Daire Galeri

The exhibition will take place in the gallery Daire Sanat and a limited edition book entitled “Becoming: Cure as Care / Olagelen: İhtimam” has been specially curated by the artist Cemre Yeşil Gönenli for the occasion.

The exhibition can be visited in between 17th March — 21st April 2018.
As an artist, academician, photographer and perhaps a curator ‘to become’, Cemre Yeşil Gönenli aims to create a space to ‘learn and teach’ under the shadow of ‘sharing’ and ‘becoming’, by bringing together not only all those people she has learnt from; like her students, her teachers, and her peers, but also their various stories on ‘becoming’ they have told through photographs.

PHOTO OF THE DAY | From "La Puente" photo essay, by Le Journal's photographer Charlotte Schmitz :

"170 women work in the biggest brothel of South Ecuador. This brothel is called La Puente.
My photos were developed in collaboration with the women working in the brothel, so it was important for me to choose a medium that would give them full control over their identity. Working with a polaroid camera gave the women the possibility to control and personalize their own photos. To protect their identity, many of the women painted with nail polish on their own pictures. It was initially used to hide identity, but quickly developed into a creative process and even a way of staging the world within the brothel. The women decided how they wanted to be photographed. Not only their selected poses, but also the use of nail polish tell about the women’s inner and outer perceptions.
This collaboration made it possible to form a deeper and more complex understanding of the women in the brothel because they represent and define themselves independently. This project is not a classical work about prostitution it is rather about the inner and outer perceptions of women working in »La Puente« and about the general sexualized picture of women in our society."

"Conceived as a vehicle to promote social integration and multiculturalism with economic and political stability, while avoiding new wars on the continent, the European Union has brought a certain wellness to its citizens in its first 60 years of life, but it seems still far away from reaching many of its founding ideals. With this exhibition, we aim to invite you to reflect on the current state of things and to ask yourself which Europe has been so far and which Europe you wish to see and live in the future."

Le Journal's photographer Charlotte Schmitz had the opportunity to meet and to make the portrait of Orhan Pamuk, Turkish novelist recipient of Nobel Prize in Literature. His work has sold over thirteen million books in sixty-three languages making him the country's best-selling writer.

"What literature needs most to tell and investigate today are humanity's basic fears: the fear of being left outside, and the fear of counting for nothing, and the feelings of worthlessness that come with such fears; the collective humiliations, vulnerabilities, slights, grievances, sensitivities, and imagined insults, and the nationalist boasts and inflations that are their next of kin ... Whenever I am confronted by such sentiments, and by the irrational, overstated language in which they are usually expressed, I know they touch on a darkness inside me." — Orhan Pamuk, Nobel Lecture
