During this period, philosopher and artist Miguel Prado’s sonic output has included synthesizing a sonic Gernika with his band HARRGA alongside Dali de Saint Paul, and crafting a hallucinatory sci-fi mythology for Lucrecia Dalt’s latest album, ¡Ay!.”

Rewiring the conventions of chamber electronics and postmodern songwriting.

Here it is presented A Spanish’ song cycle on love and cosmological redshift. The distant echo of Tristan‐and‐Iseult’s smoking gun where lo******ng becomes an enactment of entropy, a transformation between the dynamic and the static, the human and the fe**sh, illustrating the inevitable decline into chaos and stillness.

A beached singing voice (beautifully processed by Rashad Becker) against electro-acoustic backdrops ranging from the caustic, viscous to the bonecrushingly dense worldbuilding shared by HR Giger, Ballard and Pynchon. Transcendental and psychotic vistas that boldly examine human fragility and the surrounding abyss of godlessness.

DJ GAWAD, the self-proclaimed “best producer in the Middle East”, is the pseudonymous persona of the Arab artist, pioneer, philosopher and lover. Embarking on a journey from the West to the East, DJ GAWAD collaborated with local left-field rap artists in the region to produce his masterful debut, DJ GAWAD Presents: VOLUME 1.

Through this new persona, DJ GAWAD pulls back the curtain to reveal himself as the protagonist of the mixtape-like album, as replete with features as it is with expletives, an enigmatic ghoul in the back of the studio with an endless supply of broken sample flips, giving the album its old school feel while still speaking to contemporary hip hop aesthetics.

Drawing heavily from the Memphis rap mixtapes of the mid 1990s, DJ GAWAD has clearly identified the same brooding atmosphere in his own surroundings. As if liberated by DJ GAWAD’s anonymity and irreverence, his menagerie of artists appear to have been emboldened, embracing the obscene free naturedness of the album, setting their lyrical prowess free to wander.

No expense was spared in the post production treatment of DJ GAWAD’s debut, with Iraqi-American artist Mark Gergis incorporating the Nakamichi Dragon cassette deck in the mastering process, as is evidenced by the crisp saturation of the album’s sonics.

Brodinski - The Sinkhole 🕳️ UP FOR PRE-ORDER NOW
Ashtray Anthem 🚬 Streaming on all platforms

The neon-lit allure of Miami at night is an aesthetic hard-coded into frazzled eye sockets, whether you grew up enthralled by Tony Montana’s rise to power or fell into the ultra-violent fantasy of GTA. Something about the clamouring Florida heat drives people to excess, whether they’re players in a fiction or real-lifers living like movie stars. It’s a visceral aesthetic which enchants the world over — just one lurid notch in the bedpost of American cultural colonialism — and it shows up the sullied reality of ‘the dream’ even in the dimmest of lighting.

Brodinski didn’t have to soak up this pervasive inspiration vicariously through mixed media — bedded into Miami for a summer, he wrote The Sinkhole while contemplating the knotty character of this art deco wonderland once the sun goes down. The French producer has lived many lives in many places throughout his career, touching on chart-baiting electro and late 00s techno as a breakout superstar in the superclub era. Evil World saw him working with a heavyweight cast of rappers and more recently he’s linked up with the likes of Louisahhh and Low Jack to indulge a more gutter-dwelling flip on his upfront, flamboyant strain of haute-club-couture.

The Sinkhole evokes broad, palm-lined boulevards cast in the moon’s milky glow in every haunting pad — a seductive siren song calling out over Biscayne Bay. But threat is never far away, spelt out in every bludgeoning, bloated slap of bass, in every quivering string line cast in a minor chord, in the needlepoint detail slithering and shivering around the rhythm section. Without resorting to the lowest common denominator of speed, Brodinski finds his own way to spell out tension, directing a bewitching set piece that beguiles as it ensnares, promising you the depraved but oh-so elegant thrill ride your heart so deeply, ashamedly desires.

Saint Abdullah & Eomac - Light meteors crashing around you will not confuse you

Release date: April 4, 2024

Saint Abdullah & Eomac rekindle their longstanding collaboration in this fiery new release sourced from the multiple cultural references and personal stories of its producers.

In their third installment entitled “Light meteors crashing around you will not confuse you”, the New York-based Iranian-Canadian siblings Mohammad and Mehdi Mehrabani-Yeganeh aka Saint Abdullah & Wicklow-based Irish producer Ian McDonnell aka Eomac continue their exploration of sounds and rhythms through an expansive use of sampling and heavy distorted beats.

The trio recorded the album as the world witnessed the genocide on Gaza, Mohammad notes that all tracks were “recorded within a few weeks in October after the war broke out as we tried to keep our heads above water.” The sound of Saint Abdullah is characterized by a keen interest to challenge cultural perceptions and expectations of diasporic narratives, by foregrounding sounds, field recordings, and sacred and profane music from the multiple worlds they belong to. They pay homage to the distinct influences, however sonically and culturally disparate, that have permeated their records and musical process so far. Together with Eomac, they continue a conversation shaped by their ever-growing sonic heritage and shared musical affinities. The inclusion of field recordings for example, often personal ones, are not ornamental but are integral parts of the whole album in which vocal samples are both used in moments of release or through thrusts of heavy beats, continually mirroring a state of unease.…

In this historic period of grief and anger, ‘Light meteors crashing around you will not destroy you’ musically and conceptually engages world systems and beliefs through the experiences and stories of its producers.

All proceeds will go to Gaza (UNRWA)

DJ Gawad, the self-proclaimed “best producer in the Middle East”, is anonymous for reasons of honor and religion. We are pleased to announce the release of “Alive in the living room - على قيد الحياة في غرفة القعدة” a 27-min sound mass on CD and handwritten hymnbook by —Limited run of 100 🔗 https://drownedbylocals.bandcamp.com/album/alive-in-the-living-room

"With Alive in the living room I wanted to present a sonic landscape that unfolds into three parts that make up aspects of sleep paralysis,
Something I have lived with all of my adult life.
Instead of fighting against it.
Fall deeper into it.
I could never speak or shout for help in moments of paralysis during sleep so I decided to put no vocals onto this body of work.
Letting the improvised music dictate the space that would be the bleak terrain of dead dreams.
After making the music I decided to write a short poem to describe what sleep paralysis is to me.
Pulling off my fingernails, being ridiculed and scabs that won’t heal are a common thread into where my subconscious takes me in my moments of dead sleep.
Facing my obscure fears head-on and waking up to a nothingness that is the sofa in my mother’s living room.
Questioning what just happened?
Who am I?
What am I?"
—Richie Culver

"Though the actual act of art-making is not torturous or tedious for Culver, the everyday can be. Life is for agonizing; art is the instantaneous expulsion of the thoughts and urges that emerge from it.

Alive in the Living Room is exemplary of that ethos. The Hull-born, mostly London-based artist created the 27-minute “sound mass” in one take, but it was born from a whole adulthood of suffering from sleep paralysis. The piece is a near-immediate response to Culver asking himself, What if I just succumbed to it?”
—Megan Hullander, Document Journal

"While this extended soundscape doesn’t feature vocals, it is accompanied by a handwritten hymn book, where close-up photographs of possibly tortured fingernails are accompanied by phrases in both English and Arabic. “Am I really this selfish”, asks Culver, opening a line of self-interrogation and cryptic disaffection which continues throughout its beautiful black and white pages.”

Global noise-rap punktronics from a global guest cast of MCs and vocalists from Bristol to Togo, Uganda to Palestine - steeped in the mystery and folklore of a small town in Dorset, England. Weld is the defining statement of the Kinlaw universe

Opening with Abdel Ja7eem Hafeth Laith Demashqieh wrenching cover of Johnny Thunders - Society Makes me sad, in Arabic. After the dust settles, things begin as they intend to go on with the belter Zuzuka featuring Ugandan MC and Nyege Nyege hero Ecko Bazz
“An early four-strong run featuring local lions Danny Nedelko, Dali De Saint Paul, Birthmark and Kelan offers tenderness and belligerence, grace and havoc, and induces a dizzying array of emotional responses.”—Noel Gardner, The Quietus
Effected Signaller features Togolese No Corner / Rwdfwd vocalist yaobobby. Side A draws to a close with Earthwork ft Robin Stewart (of Giant Swan infame), followed by While My Smart Speaker Gently Weeps featuring the enigmatic Operation Egodeath.
On side B, Tunisian Toxic club - نادي السم soldiers Flow Tha Key and Dry Veins bring their respective mellow and doom performances in Kinchasa and Too Many Signals; separated by future-shocked thickly accented Italian rap by Franco Franco in E Gli Fanno; followed by local high priest D Ham in Helixir, and later by Palestinian MC Farouq Yousef Strategically Demorphed, staving off total collapse in an isolated vault which is falling apart; a Sisyphean journey to madness. In ملوك الشغب , Kafr El Dauwar singer, composer and songwriter Ibrahim X brings the mixtape’s energy to an unexpected turn with his famous full blown Egyptian Mahraganat aesthetics, only to be grounded towards the end by Elvin Brandhi Speech Plasticity. The curtains close with Siren Ludi, Kinlaw’s Weld Opera Finale.

Weld was assembled with 30 dubs, chats at the pub and a few emails. Some artists like Operation Egodeath, Robin Stewart (of Giant Swan infame), Dali De Saint Paul, Kelan, D Ham are confirmed members of the shadowy Avon Terror Corps shadowy, Ceramics alumni or Bristol underground friends like Birthmark or Danny Nedelko (lead singer of Heavy Lungs), Togolese No Corner / Rwdfwd vocalist yaobobby, and from the cybernetic industrial rap duo Kinlaw & Franco Franco, the Italian MC Franco Franco. At its core Weld is a celebration of this strong local scene - in Kinlaw’s world, local is global - through internet or psychic projection, we are all one. The link-up with Jordan’s premiere avant garde outlet Drowned By Locals is an important expression of this no-borders attitude - with them providing a jumping point to a wealth of vocal talent from the Middle East and beyond, starting with their own Abdel Ja7eem Hafeth aka Al-Mutreb Abul-Loul Laith Demashqieh from Jordan, Tunisian Toxic club - نادي السم soldiers Flow Tha Key and Dryveins Iss, Palestinian MC MrF13, Kafr El Dauwar singer, composer and songwriter Ibrahim X from Egypt, Wales-born vocalist and sound artist Elvin Brandhi, and Ugandan MC, Activist and Nyege Nyege hero Ecko Bazz

Among drone-folk trips and joyously messed up noise jazz, Daryl Worthington finds the cassette scene has taken a political turn, whether immersive electronics fighting for free time, nostalgia-busting collages, or colonialism attacking text-sound compositions.

17/03/2023

Essential alternative music industry infrastructure is conspicuously absent in the Jordanian capital, but these artists are dead set on building a thriving scene with cutting-edge musical output.

17/03/2023

A colourful and fast-paced mixtape that captures the global cross-pollination of genres in underground electronic music right now.

15/03/2023

By melting about 500 cuts from TV and radio archives, found footage, commercials, forgotten songs, movies, pop trends, internet culture, and other sources of sound that whisper or shout in listeners’ ears, “Melting” engages with the romanticized consumerist vision of the past as portrayed by big corporations, capitalist entities, and authoritarian regimes.

Melting was submitted as part of Rami Abadir's master’s thesis in “Digital Media” at the University of Arts Bremen. For more info check the website designed by Iulia Radu: https://abadir-melting.netlify.app/

firstlin3 crawled out the mud in 2017, spit up six gnarled pieces of ritual regueton, and sunk back in. Then came four years of ambient bass meditation and four full-lengths of alien-angelic soundscapes under the name Concrete Fantasies. All the while, firstlin3 was exploring the tunnels that run through the underbelly of Babylon, recruiting allies for a sonic war on the city.

𖤐paranoia star𖤐 is the first attack. Backed by a squad of the global underground’s most loced out digital devils, firstlin3 hops between clow rap, trancehall and skeledub, all black cat smooth and dank enough to smell through the sub.
