Your unwavering advocacy for marginalized and vulnerable populations is inspiring. Your voice brings attention to critical issues and gives a voice to those who may not have one.

It was hard for me to deal with race in the 10-year plan because I knew every time race was brought up, those who were in power would use it as an excuse for not working on something.

I was adamant about ensuring we do not use racism in the report, but a great conversation with Josephine opened my eyes to why this was important. Josephine told me, "As long as we keep trying to hide how we got here, those in power who have control will keep the system the same. Still, those trying to change the system need to be reminded of what people of color have gone through and how barriers in the system are hurting us. Still, the root cause is always racism and structural racism."

Her words made me look at it differently, and I understood what needed to be done. The steering committee suggested not just making one statement about racism but showing how every part of the 10-year that racism played a part in that policy or action was created from institutional bias.

You are moving the needle on change; remember this: you are in a position that allows you to bring critical issues and gives a voice to those who may not have one.
