🪷Did you know that medals were also crafted for religious purposes and commemoration?

Very surprised to find a medal celebrating the founding of a four-hundred-years-old temple in Kyoto, Japan.

🇯🇵 Featuring a Buddhist nun and two symbolized phoenixes on the obverse, this medal was minted in 1932.

Founded in 1619, Chion-In Temple can be easily reached today via a 20-minute taxi ride from Kyoto station.

🐲Step into the Lunar New Year - the Zodiac Year of the Dragon - with a dragon medal!

This medal was made for the Colonial Exposition of 1931 in Paris. “Empire D’ Annam” (present day Vietnam) was a French protectorate from 1887 till 1948.

🥢 The medal obverse features an Annamese Dignitary, with an attire that was heavily influenced by Chinese court culture.

There were quite a number of traditions that the Annamese court adopted from imperial China. This included the use of imperial exams to seek talents to serve in court and the use of dragon motifs to symbolize royalty.

🔫⚓️ Ever wondered how the term “gunboat diplomacy” was originated?

According to Wikipedia, this term comes from the nineteenth century period of imperialism when military might, usually naval forces, were used to intimidate to obtain objectives.

🪦This medal from the Paris Mint commemorates the death of Admiral Courbet in 1885.

He took part in the conquest of Tonkin (part of northern Vietnam including Hanoi today) and died during a naval campaign near Taiwan.

🀄️The imperial Qing empire actually hosted an international trade fair in China before its collapse in 1912.

Held in Nanking in 1910, the Nanyang Exposition showcased nearly a million trade items and had over 300,000 visitors.

International participation came from France, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, and the United States.

🐲 The medal’s obverse showcases the exposition’s entrance, surrounded by imperial dragons on both sides.

This is the only graded piece in the PCGS population and is graded at MS61. Quite a cool piece.

🇭🇰Ever wondered when the island of Hong Kong was ceded to the British?

This rare bronze medal explicitly commemorates the Treaty of Nanking after the “First O***m War” in 1842 when Hong Kong was ceded.

Reverse inscribed with “ARMIS EXPOSCERE PACEM” in Latin which translates as “To Demand Peace by Dint of Arms”.

🪙 Designed by famed engraver William Wyon, who was the official Chief Engraver at the British Royal Mint from 1828 till his death in 1851.
