The new president of the Venezuelan National Assembly Juan Guaido is being set up as a president of Venezuela over the head of Nicolas Maduro Moros by the United States of America's deep state and its allied countries on the war against Venezuela.
The National Assembly is in disobedience because of running with three parliamentaries that were found guilty of fraud. It is therefore not acting as part of the rest of the powers in the Venezuelan government and it is not recognized by any of these powers. They are acting on behalf of the US empire to hand in the country to the US empire and the multinational corporations that run it.

The Venezuelan economy is being crippled by the sanctions the Western powers (US, Canada, European Union) have imposed on it. Sanctions impose heavy burdens on ordinary Venezuelans who are just trying to live their lives. Unilateral sanctions are illegal under international law.
Steve Ellner will discuss the impact of these sanctions and the impact of other factors (such as the drop in the price of oil, the reliance on oil exports, economic sabotage by the right-wing, mismanagement) on the Venezuelan people's lives.
Since 1977 Steve Ellner has taught economic history and political science at the Universidad de Oriente in Puerto La Cruz, Venezuela and for a ten year period taught in the graduate school of law and political science of the Universidad Central de Venezuela.
