Desert Magazine Desert Magazine promotes the outdoor lifestyle- Hiking, Camping, 4x4, Photography, Exploring, Prospecting and much more !

www.desertmagazinesw.com In 1937 Randall Henderson created Desert Magazine which was a monthly publication of the great deserts of the southwest. Every issue had fantastic stories and tales as well as showcasing some of the deserts premier photographers, poets, artist and such. In almost every issue the maps of a self-taught cartographer Norton Allen would provide readers of future exploring. R

andall left Desert Magazine and after a series of publishers the magazine ceased printing in the summer of 1985. Over a decade later we saw “American Desert” come to life but was aborted after a short run. Since the middle 70’s I have traversed the deserts of the southwest as well as Baja and Sonora- and have pondered as we move into a digital age if somehow one could self-publish a “new” Desert Magazine, not to clone what once was…but to provide an outlet to showcase all artist on all levels, to publish many stories from a new “pool” of writers and provide a voice for what is left of a fragile ecosystem. Many times I have been asked why do I use the name Desert Magazine….when Desert Magazine came out in 1937 Mr. Henderson already knew of another publication using that name…. Many of you know that the publication folded in bankruptcy in 1985- which meant all rights of copyright rolled back to every individual writer, artist, etc. That is a big mess for anyone who seeks permission to use an article. In short we\I have challenged in many ways the logo and have an updated design- and as far as the name- I could not think of another name that captures the “spirit” of the southwest. This November will mark the 75th Birthday of the original magazine. What a better way to introduce a new e-zine and would like to see many of you on board! The Milky Way over Monument Valley!
This was a bucket list shot that very fortunately for me was possible during my trip to Utah back in October. I’ve always enjoyed this scene- made famous in the movie Forrest Gump. But in October, the Milky Way lines up perfectly with this iconic road! The only thing I really didn’t count on was all of the cars! It made getting this shot much more difficult- but also makes me that much more proud of the image I was able to create!
