Don't Follow Your Inspiration, It Will Get You Nowhere
If you feel inspired to do something, the best thing you can do is ignore it. That is if you want to make no progress in life. The one thing that we as humans do the very best is fail. Not necessarily on purpose, but by not planning, or reacting when inspiration strikes us. Most often we choose to ignore our instincts out of fear of the unknown. What if I look like a fool? What if I don’t succeed? By letting fear take hold, we fall backwards in the rut of our own comforts, then we whine about not being as successful as one of our Facebook Friends, or we’re not as good as our brother or sister.
I have a bucket list, and one of the items on that list is to record a song. I am by no stretch of the imagination a professional singer, there are so many people with far more talent than I have. But I felt inspired to record a song, not a full album, but a single track. After all, all endings start with a single step. I made some phone calls, got an amazing pianist, cellist, violinist, and arranged a studio space to shoot a video. I wanted to have the very best people alongside me. I was absolutely terrified! I worked up the courage to record, and perform a full track. I did it! It took a lot of guts, but when it was all said and done, I can say that it was the most exhilarating things I’ve done in a long time. It was like I jumped out of an airplane and was free falling, but when I landed, I wanted to get in the air and do it again.
Don’t let fear of failure get in your way of success. Failure is just practice, if you get back up and keep trying, eventually you’ll make it work out no matter what you’re trying. Nobody is perfect and even if it’s not great it’s still a big accomplishment. At the end of the day you don’t want to look back on your life with regrets saying I wish I woulda, coulda, shoulda. Do it now!
