We publish in Arabic, Farsi, English and Greek and work with writers, translators and artists from around the world. About ‘Chios Voices’
Launched in February 2017, Chios Voices is a creative platform for children and teenagers from the refugee populations on Chios, Greece. Run by Be Aware and Share, who operate two schools and youth centre on the island, catering to around 350 children and teena
gers every week, Chios Voices invites contributions of art, poetry, music, writing and video. Whilst the primary aim is not to highlight the atrocious conditions often experienced by young refugees, the platform does offer a unique and critical perspective on the state of affairs on the Aegean islands. A space for personal accounts and testimonies, Chios Voices is proud to offer an alternative form of journalism covering the refugee situation, promoting ethical and consistent coverage of an unfolding crisis. Working with translators from across the globe, Chios Voices encourages submissions in a writer’s first language. Submissions are then translated into both English and Greek to reach as wide an audience as possible. The teams of translators we work with are often students and young people themselves who, through engagement and work with Chios Voices, can make a powerful contribution to a platform that seeks to establish direct and meaningful links, through creative media, to audiences far away from the refugee crisis. Although Chios Voices focuses on the students attending the Be Aware and Share schools and youth centre, the platform also invites submissions from former students, local community, volunteers and Greek students. Additionally, a new initiative aims to work with illustrators and graphic artists from around the world, including from refugee populations, to produce original artwork and graphics to accompany written submissions.
