In this instance, I have chosen NOT to cancel my subscription to the Washington Post, though I understand why so many of my friends seemed to have. I do not believe the cancelations will have any impact on Bezos, and instead, could hurt the hard-working reporters, photographers and editors who produce an invaluable news product every day and will be needed to keep a close on this election and its aftermath. We need more robust and independent journalism not less of it.

Over 200,000 people canceled their subscriptions in the first few days following news that The Washington Post would not endorse any presidential candidate.

Free speech agenda? From NPR: On the campaign trail and in interviews, Trump has suggested that if he regains the White House, he will exact vengeance on news outlets that anger him.

More specifically, Trump has pledged to toss reporters in jail and strip major television networks of their broadcast licenses as retribution for coverage he didn't like. https://www.npr.org/2024/10/22/nx-s1-5161480/trump-media-threats-abc-cbs-60-minutes-journalists?fbclid=IwY2xjawGHmiNleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHW6PEAsTMwsFn85k6wIJF2hXrS7pgSr-NzjHjLwEmjNf-JLr71fktCz1BA_aem_14V21vGx18xCj5Y3BfqShg

On the campaign trail, former President Donald Trump has threatened to jail reporters who won't give up the sources of leaks and to strip networks of their broadcast licenses for fact-checking him.

One way or the other, the presidential election will likely affect U.S. policy toward plastic production and waste management.

The presidential election could have big implications for how the United States responds to a global plastics crisis, though a gridlocked Congress would reduce those options.

As America grapples with an escalating plastic crisis, the city of Houston, ExxonMobil, and other partners announced a new program that promised to recycle nearly all of the city’s plastic waste. However, after two years, the program has yet to fully materialize. Critics argue that the evidence su...

This was a first for me - working with a national television news network - the storied CBS News, in fact. We collaborated in a deep dive into a public-private partnership in Houston that is promising to recycle 90 percent of all plastic. (The recycling rate there less than 10 percent - likely a lot less. There are and will be several places to read and view the work, including on the Inside Climate News website. But look in the comments below for a link to the CBS News website, where you can get a sneak preview of a CBS Reports documentary that will premiere tomorrow on the Paramount Plus streaming service:

Houston seeks to be a national model for plastic recycling. But a program that started in 2022 hasn’t yet found its footing.

Last month wasn’t only the hottest June by far in the observed temperature record, but marked the first-ever 12-month stretch of the Earth’s average temperature exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius of temperature rise above the pre-industrial baseline against which human-caused warming is measured. From my colleague Bob Berwyn:

New data shows the planet’s fever stayed above a crucial target for a full year, but it would need to do that for decades to breach the Paris Agreement limit.

Trump looms large over the West Virginia governor's race. So does energy policy.

West Virginia’s aggressive Attorney General Patrick Morrisey takes on Huntington Mayor Steve Williams in a state still 90 percent dependent on coal for electricity.

The lawyers at Earthjustice say the Supreme Court gave corporations another ruling that will benefit them. Fro, a press release that I just received: "The Supreme Court’s decision today in favor of Corner Post, Inc. alters the statute of limitations for challenging agency actions, threatening the stability of the many rules that provide us with stable, effective protections from the unchecked power of corporations like polluting industries.

"Before today, under the Administrative Procedure Act (APA), when an agency issued a regulation, parties had 6 years to challenge it. After that, we could all rely on the regulation as settled, and depend on its protections. Now, the time to sue starts from when a challenger is first harmed by a rule, so all industry has to do is create a new corporation if it wants to challenge old rules. Even before this decision, corporations had flagged it as one that might allow them to challenge old regulations they would rather not comply with, and now, they’ve been proven right. The decision will sow chaos and undermine predictability and legal certainty. Even corporations are likely to regret asking the Court to take this step. "
“The one-two punch of this decision and the Loper/Relentless decision is obvious,” said Earthjustice Vice President of Program Sambhav Sankar. “As Justice Kagan presciently warned us last week: Agency decisions that weren’t even challenged before under Chevron will be now. That’s because corporations will look out at a sea of judges eager to strike down protective regulations and be emboldened to take a shot at challenging them.”

When I was writing about toxic air from Rubbertown chemical plants in western Louisville in the early 2000s, Merv would, with a bit of a smile, complain about how my reporting was hurting the property value of his home in the area. He then quickly told me to keep reporting on those problems, which really were a textbook case of environmental injustice. He was such an inspiration in the newsroom and so deserving of the accolades awarded him over the years. He made me proud to be a CJer, for sure. https://www.newsbreak.com/share/3505827871415-pioneering-black-louisville-journalist-mervin-aubespin-dead-at-86?_f=app_share&s=i16&pd=006wh2ux&lang=en_US&send_time=1719409151&trans_data=%7B%22platform%22%3A0%2C%22cv%22%3A%2224.25.0.26%22%2C%22languages%22%3A%22en%22%7D&sep=ns_foryou_model_exp_24q3-v9%2Cns_foryou_blend_exp_24q3-v3&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2vC3XC_8wyXBKfLi2u1uNCdiU2wRlIEJWHECMOTkBPi-jiKxqiZ_rXxCY_aem_i98ublg50RnlFZsQjPce3g

The plastics lawsuits are piling up. One legal expert told me this is to be expected as long as Congress sits on the sidelines and fails to pass a comprehensive national plastics waste policy.

“Every community has the same problem,” a lawyer representing Baltimore says about plastic waste. It’s one of the first cities to sue companies that create the waste.

The race to fill Sen.Manchin’s seat could radically change West Virginia’s role as the state limiting the ambitions of national climate policy. What’s at stake? With

The departure of Sen. Joe Manchin appears to end the second-leading coal-producing state’s decades at the fulcrum of federal energy policy.
