The tiny town of Boalsburg Pennsylvania is often credited with being the birthplace of Memorial Day.

In October of 1864, during the Civil War a small group of young women took flowers to the local cemetery to honor fallen soldiers.

The following year the women gathered again. This time inviting a local clergyman to join them to give a sermon. This began an annual tradition known as "Decoration Day."

Three years later Gen. John Logan of the Grand Army of the Republic dedicated May 30th "for the purpose of comrades who died in defense of their country."

After that sporadic celebrations began to sprout up around the country but it wasn't until 1971 that the Uniform Monday Holiday Act made Memorial Day a national holiday.
