Coming Soon is "I love me some Patrice Rushen day" celebrating this funkmaster and the incredible bassist she has on her albums. But today I am highlighting the great bassist Freddie Washington on "Get Off (You fascinate me)". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTrFHdAdKyI

I'm going to end for now with my tirade about the lack of funk bands in the Rock Hall of Fame. I could mention several more including Gap Band, Dazz Band, Zapp Band, Heatwave, Midnight Starr on and on. But I also want to mention a number of Black artists incredibly not in the RockHall like Dionne Warwick, Fifth Dimension, Natalie Cole, Teddy Pendergrast, Delfonics, Dramatics, Chi-Lites, Spinners, Stylistics, Pointer Sisters, Anita Baker, Luther, TLC, BabyFace on and on.. Time will tell

It might surprise some people that I vote for this band to be in the RockHall. The first point, Herbie's career has spanned not just jazz (i.e. Miles Davis's second great quintet) but funk, pop, and soul. Herbie Hancock should have been in years ago, Second: these two albums have some of the most fantastic funk EVER created. Third Paul Jackson's bass playing was innovative and broke the mold for bass playing. Finally, I broke the eight-track of this album twice because I played it so much: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffzjh7nl3Lg

As great of as any "live" funk act on the planet. The Bar-Kays' James Alexander is the bassist (even in the original band that died in the crash). For me, one of the more disrespectful omissions from the RockHall with Ohio Players, War, Kool and the Gang and The Meteors although all the groups I listed should be in the RockHall. Ain't nothing funkier than this jam https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJlAop6SyLI

This omission surprised me. I just assumed he had to be in the RockHall. Early funk. My aunt's favorite record was "Shotgun https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnhI_ECOAK4 The bass player on "Shotgun" is one of the greatest- James Jamerson

If this group had never made another song his bass on that record gets them in the RockHall (my vote)

I've listed several "funk" bands that should be in the Rock Hall of Fame this is one of my favorites: Average White Band. It contained not only two of the best voices in Funk/Soul Alan Gorrie and Hamish Stuart they both played bass on records. Hamish Stuart played bass on 'School Boy Crush". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B1uf121ULw I'm also launching a page about drummer and Steve Ferrone is one of my favorite R/B drummers

Frederick "Fudgie Kae" Solomon was the bassist for Mandrill from the second album "Mandrill Is". Their influence on so many other groups should warrant their inclusion in the RockHall. You are probably thinking "Fencewalk" but I'm posting "Ape is High" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr55GRDYpkg

Aaron Mills+Michael Burnett (along with the list I posted earlier, even Larry Blackmon has played bass on their albums) two of the great bassist of CAMEO. I wanted a picture of William Revis the bassist for CAMEO on "Rigor Mortis" There isn't a song on the planet any funkier than "Rigor Mortis". Again...CAMEO isn't in the RockHall. How do you funk for 45 years and NOT get in into the RockHall. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQY1jCbrC2k

20/01/2023

Up next.. what do these bass players (several of them multi-instrumentalist) have in common: Aaron Mills, William Revis, Gary Dow, Michel Burnett, Charlie Singleton (dead giveaway), Barry Johnson, Kevin Kendrick? I'm about to put some "C on the Funk" RockHall because you haven't yet..Word Up!

This omission hurts my heart because I loves me some Chaka Khan. Bobby Watson was the bassist for Rufus. Chaka should be in the RockHall (twice) with Rufus and as a solo act. My favorite Rufus track- only true Rufus fans will understand this choice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQYdfRmTCpM Love to Chaka Khan..

Not that it's the most important thing in the world but very few funk bands are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This week I'm posting the bass players from the bands I believe should be in the Rock Hall starting with Marshall "Rock" Jones. The band of course is THE OHIO Players!!! How about some "Skin Tight" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_M0k9ez_uI Stay tuned for more bands...

This post is in honor of Anita Pointer. I was blessed to have seen the Pointers during their "campy" period: unique, funky +jazzy. I think its a shame the Pointers didn't get in the R&R Hall of Fame before she died (but that's part of an upcoming post). "Yes We Can Can " is just a funky, New Orleans groove. The bassist as I've posted before is Dexter C Plates

I've posted a pic of Jimmy Haslip before related to the "Brother to Brother" album but as I listen to "People I belong too" for the millionth time shout out to him again. The musicians on Gino Vannelli's albums are incredible not to mention how often he used The Waters for backup vocals. Name a singer after 40+ years of recording still sounds incredible ..here is one...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eCEbwB_XRV8

One of my favorites, the great Paul Jackson rest his funky soul.. In this field of great electric bassist his work with Herbie is some of my favorite tracks: Sunlight is an underrated album deemed by some jazz heads as too "commercial" but I love this album. Of course I played "Thrust" a million times more but I still love "Sunlight".
