On July 13 we met groups and families floating along the Bronx River with Rocking the Boat, a nonprofit that trains Bronx youth to build boats from scratch. 🌊 🚤

Returning to the dock at Hunts Point Riverside Park, after spending some time on the river, one 6-year-old was awed by her experience recalling how exhilarating it was “to let your hands just drag in the water…and I thought it was going to be like a little lake but it was so much bigger.”

Best of all, Rocking the Boat offers free rowing, sailing and birding for free to the public every Saturday through 8/31.

Community members were treated to the sounds of freedom at the Bronx Music Heritage Center’s Juneteenth Jubilee on June 19 in Soundview.

The event, which was free and open to the public, was presented by the Manhattan Opera Repertory Ensemble (MORE Opera) and the Bronx Music Heritage Center chorus.

Pianist Patricio Molina served as conductor.
“I think that music, more than any art, can open people’s minds,” said Molina.

The chorus and soloists performed 18 songs, including “Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit,” “Michael Row the Boat Ashore” and the Black national Anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

Music, dancing and art ruled the day in Longwood last weekend, as the Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education hosted a three-day party to honor the South Bronx’s cultural past.

The crowd swelled to 300 by the time legendary Salsa Jazz pianist Eddie Palmieri took the stage.

When the lights go down in the ID Studio Theater, both actors and audience are ready to step into the history of salsa music and the blind Afro-Cuban composer who helped shape its signature sound.

“Arsenio,” a play in Spanish and English, debuted Feb. 15 and has since extended its Mott Haven run thanks to popular demand through March 17. It traces the history of one of the borough’s most celebrated musical styles and tells the story of musician Arsenio Rodriguez, who lived in Longwood after emigrating from his native Cuba.

The Hunts Point Recreation Center is getting a new playground, and its design will be inspired by input from its most frequent and important visitors: kids from the neighborhood.

Students from Bronx Academy for Multi-Media and St. Ignatius middle schools gathered Friday at the Hunts Point Recreation Center to hear a short presentation on the renovation plans for its current playground. The presentation was delivered by the Department of Parks and Recreation, and once it was over, the children were invited to share their wish lists for the updated space.

As a child, poetry was her refuge – now it’s a passion for Bronx Poet Laureate Kerryanne Bell.

Bell, 39, who likes to go by “Kay,” didn’t have an easy childhood while growing up in Morrisania.

Her mother was caught in an abusive marriage, the family dealt with poverty, and Bell, who experienced verbal and emotional abuse, eventually wound up in the foster care system until she was 10 years old.

As a youngster looking for a safe place, Bell needed a way to get away from those problems.

She found her haven in writing poetry.

In September, floods swept the South Bronx and much of the city in a whirlwind of rainwater, reminding New Yorkers of the importance of coastal resiliency, which the city has struggled with in recent years.

Waste Management, the private waste transfer facility off the Bruckner Boulevard and along the Harlem River, took a first swing at that last month, when they planted a microforest with 500 indigenous trees and shrubs to help protect against floods and enhance a biodiverse environment.

Tenants at 940 Tiffany Street in Longwood say they often don't have heat or hot water, and the front door of their apartment building is almost always broken. Many of them have resorted to electric space heaters to stay warm.
