SAIC commencement more eventful than usual. I estimate that well over 200 students took part.

Many students carried gold flyers with images of a crown, bullets and bombs, symbolizing the Crown family, who are benefactors to the Art Institute and who students say invest in weapons manufacturers. They tore the flyers on stage.

Statement from a spokesperson at AIC:

“The Art Institute of Chicago respects a group’s right to peacefully protest without harming staff and visitors. Today, a group of individuals, including some SAIC students, began a protest in the museum’s North Garden, and as it progressed, protesters surrounded and shoved a security officer and stole their keys to the museum, blocked emergency exits, and barricaded gates. The protest also began to escalate on Michigan Avenue outside of the museum. Because our priority is the safety of our employees, our visitors, and our collection, protesters were offered an alternative location to continue their protest on campus that would be safer for all involved, and they did not accept that relocation offer. During multiple rounds of negotiations, SAIC student protesters were promised amnesty from academic sanction and trespassing charges if they agreed to relocate. The School also agreed to meet with a student group to discuss their demands. After approximately five hours, an agreement could not be reached. The Chicago Police Department ended the protest in the safest way possible, and we estimate that approximately 50 people were arrested,” a spokesperson from the museum said.”

A bloody year has passed in Iran. Still, the broken hearts of Iranians worldwide seek the white flags of justice, and the breathtaking moment of a fair trial to condemn the murderers of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old girl. Amini was killed in the custody of Guidance Patrol, a vice squad in the law enforcement command of the Islamic Republic of Iran which arrests Iranian girls who resist wearing hijab to cover their hair, and body.

In Simon Jimenez’s fantasy novel, “The Spear Cuts Through Water,” two wayward souls travel over five days to overthrow an oppressive emperor and his three cursed sons. It’s a story about revenge, corruption, power, and, as it lets us know at its very beginning, love: Because even though the core narrative is about two men crossing a kingdom on foot, there are plenty of embellishments and surprises along the way.

Among the diversity of interdisciplinary media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Spring Undergraduate Exhibition 2023, the theme of cultural identity prevailed in many of the over 200 young artists’ endeavors, be it an exploration of self within a collective or a homage to cultural heritage. With the emergence of new media and technologies, there were a handful of video and interactive works at the exhibit, which was on view from April 7-15. Nicole Chan Javellana, in particular, a graduating BFA student, epitomized this combination of cultural identity and new media, infusing subtle messages into a comprehensive and cohesive body of work.

How do you reclaim your identity in a time and place that’s pushing against you? Patric McCoy (b. 1946) is an artist and art collector who was as a prolific artist for the q***r community in the 1980s. His photo works exist in an AIDS-ridden America, working through the contrast of Chicago’s insistently flourishing q***r culture and the forces which, not visually present in his photography but always unspoken, cut back on that flourishing community.

“In these unprecedented times…” Nobody likes seeing that message in an email. In fact, it’s maybe the worst email phrase of the last three years. It was used so often that it has already become passe. It has become a meme, a joke. . They’re hollow words that say nothing about what specifically is unprecedented in these times. What was the precedent? What did we not expect? Will these times ever end?

“War is hell.” It’s an oft-repeated adage, a reminder that war is never beautiful or joyful, regardless of its cause. A slightly less often repeated quote on war is this: “Every film about war ends up being pro-war.” The quote comes from French director Francois Truffaut in conversation with Gene Siskel in a 1973 interview. It’s a response to Siskel asking the French New Wave filmmaker why there is very little killing in his movies. Truffaut never elaborated on what he meant, but Siskel suspected it was about the nature of film as a medium, toying with our sympathies inevitably making its characters our heroes. And by making heroes in war, we start to believe a specific heroism is bred on the warfront. Then, we begin to view war romantically. War stops being hell. It becomes a site of grandeur, a battlefield of bravery.
