This view looking north up Vine St from Sunset Blvd, Hollywood on July 27, 1948 makes me want to go for an after-dinner stroll just so that I could take in all those lights in real life: NBC radio, the Brown Derby, the Hollywood-Broadway department store, Tom Breneman’s Hollywood restaurant. We can even see the sign for Benson Fong’s first restaurant – Ah Fong’s – which opened in 1946 ahead of a second location in Beverly Hills. On my stroll, I’d also spend a moment to enjoy that atmospheric street light and semaphore traffic signal. Anyone care to join me?

There is no shortage of photos of the famous Hollywood and Vine intersection. Color photos are less plentiful, but you can still find them. But how many of them feature a gleaming white Jaguar XK-120 parked out front of the Broadway-Hollywood department store? My friend at the Petersen Automotive museum said the car falls somewhere between 1948 and 1954. The Capitol Records building opened in 1956, so I’m guesstimating this photo at circa mid-to-late 1950s. Whatever the actual year, I’m just jealous of the Jaguar owner because he found a parking spot so close to Hollywood and Vine.

It’s an odd location for the City of Los Angeles to have spent nearly $50 million to purchase a brand new, five story luxury apartment building for the homeless. The neighborhood around 1654 West Florence Ave in South LA consists of empty, dilapidated storefronts and abandoned, crumbling apartment...

Dodge Challenger SRT Splits in Half after Fiery High-Speed Crash - 3 U.S. Marines Among 4 Killed
6.24.23 | 2:37 A.M. | I-5 Freeway & Florance Ave | Downey, CA Four people were killed after a fiery rollover crash into a pedestrian bridge on I-5 in Downey (CBS) DOWNEY - Four people, including three United States Marines, were killed in a grisly and explosive crash on the I-5 Freeway in Downey early Saturday morning. California Highway Patrol officers were first dispatched to the crash scene, which happened at around 2:30 a.m. Authorities believe that the crash happened after the driver of a Dodge Challenger lost control of their vehicle for an unknown reason and hit a guard rail on the side of the freeway before slamming into the wall beneath the Lemonran Avenue pedestrian bridge. The force of the collision "caused the vehicle to split in two, subsequently ejecting the two rear passengers onto the right shoulder," said a statement from California Highway Patrol. "The ejected parties were deceased when units arrived on the scene," officers said. The vehicle then burst into flames, which spread into the vegetation off the side of the road. Firefighters rushed to the scene to extinguish the flames. Both of the other passengers were trapped inside as the flames fully engulfed the car, and they were also pronounced dead at the scene. "It is unknown if the force of the impact or the subsequent fire was the proximate cause of death," CHP said. Three of the four people killed were Marines, according to authorities at Camp Pendleton, the largest Marine Corps base on the West Coast. Several southbound lanes of the freeway were closed for hours as authorities investigated the crash.
