My final submission for the _pwnisher_ alternate realities challenge! I knocked this piece out in less than 48 hours, including render times! Which forced me to make quick decisions with the assets I had and be creative about placement and compositing. Even with repurposing the models I had, I still couldn’t have done it without the new CyclesX Render Engine. A total time saver! The hardest part was retargeting the MOCAP data to my Robot Rig but hellorokoko saved my day. Who knew they have a free blender addon! With hundreds of the best 3D artists competing, I don’t expect to win anything. I wanted to challenge myself and see if I can complete this composition over the weekend (without neglecting client assignments) and get my render into the big submission compilation Clint’s making. My first CG project with defier ! 🐓 I finished this piece back in march but couldn’t talk about it until now. This is the final render I pitched the guys from Défier. For this project I created many different versions of the shirt (about 30) to get high enough details AND good cloth simulations. Which, as it turns out, is really hard to do. As usual, I needed way too many attempts before using tricks to give the cloth the look and feel it needed. The skateboard assembly is already one of my favorite cg sequence I’ve done so far and is definitely going into my next 3D reel! DANCE MOVES 💃 Earlier this week I was approached by a brand and got inspired to try my hand at cloth simulations. Maybe for a possible gig in the future? We’ll see. ☺️ This 15 second clip took over 20 hours to render on my rig and was created using the cloth simulator in blender. The trick is to get the friction and thickness of the material to simulate correctly which was most of the work. The Infinite Cube Contraption 🎲 Lately I’ve been mesmerized and inspired by all the satisfying CG animation loops on reddit, twitter and youtube. It took me all day to figure out and animate a simple satisfying loop on my own and here are three things I’ve learned during the process: First, your materials need to look as close to photoreal as possible. I’ve introduced surface imperfections to some areas to make the scene feel more tangible. The second and third part go hand in hand. Motion and Sound. The motion of objects need to hit that satisfying coherent sweet spot, otherwise the animation sucks. This isn’t achievable with constant keyframe interpolation. Bezier Curves are our friends. If your animation is good, your sound will enhance your scene into a mesmerizing visual piece of art. This simple piece was crazy fun and challenging to make! I made a particle simulation behave like a fluid and let it chase a Phone by a popular brand 😄 The phone is encased in a light pink metallic material on the backside and a glassy material on the front. When the phone turns to the camera the balls start to chase it. Before the wave crashes the phone, it collides with an invisible sphere. As soon as the phone turns away from camera, the fluid loses its tension and falls out of frame! Introducing Hexaberry! 🍓 A new flavor for your life - without sugar! I designed labels for my own soda drink and created a mini promo for it. This is by far the most ambitious 3D project so far. Figuring out and rendering the water simulation took me the longest, while toying with ice cube and strawberry physics was the most fun I had on this project. Would be fun to try and turn this into reality someday! Everything in this scene, except for me, is not real. For years I had the dream of compositing real subjects into entire digital environments and have them interact with the world. This week I had a big breakthrough at how it’s done and I’ve attached a handy step by step guide as to how I did it. Knowing this will be one of the most ambitious shots I’ve ever worked on, I had a rough vision in mind when I started this project. I tried 3D compositing many times over the years but it never worked out quite as well as this time. Key to a convincing composite is solid lighting on the day of recording. Match that light in your scene and expand from there. Volumes and grading add life to the shot. This is just the start for this scene, I want to expand it’s scope over time, building the world around it and fill that world with stories. The Throne Building on last weeks project, I wanted to expand upon my compositing technique by introducing flickering lights to the real and digital world. For the initial recording we basically just waved with our hands in front of the light and created a small bonfire in the throne room. Obviously you can’t match that flicker perfectly but it’s frankly stunning at how forgiving the effect is when played in real-time. Hope you enjoyed another 3D breakdown! THE STATION Final piece of my 3D compositing set in a space station! This project has a couple new things we experiment with. For instance, if you look closely you’ll notice a reflection in the window, which we did by recording a reverse shot of our initial setup. What really sells this shot for me though is the shadow on the left wall, which interacts nicely with the volumetric lighting. Finally, the reason we did this scene from this angle was to see if we can get away with just kinda matching the angle. ZEN PLACE 🇯🇵 - Exactly two years ago I was fortunate enough to travel trough Japan on my own for three weeks. With my new composition I attempted to capture the calm and soothing feeling of that experience. I’ve worked on this piece in my spare time for three weeks and it has everything I‘ve learned so far on my 3D journey.
