Nationally, sole proprietorships make up a disproportionately high share of Black-owned businesses, according to a February 2024 report by the Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit Brookings Institution. Overall, sole proprietorships make up 96.3% of all Black-owned businesses, more than any other racial and/or ethnic demographic group.
