Celebrating

Here are five ways you can support elephant conservation, from anywhere in the world:

1. Raise awareness by sharing information about the threats facing elephants on social media.
2. Follow & donate to reputable conservation organizations that work to protect and preserve elephant populations. Elephants Alive have been tracking elephants in Southern Africa for 25 years. Learn more about what they do here - https://elephantsalive.org/
3. Avoid purchasing products made from ivory or participating in activities that exploit elephants for entertainment.
4. Support eco-tourism operators that promote responsible wildlife viewing practices and contribute to conservation efforts.
5. Educate yourself and others about the importance of elephants in maintaining healthy ecosystems and the critical role they play in biodiversity.

Celebrating Africa's keystone species this

World Lion Day aims to raise awareness about the importance of protecting lions and their habitats.

What is a keystone species?

Keystone species, like lions, play a pivotal role in the survival of many other species, plants and organisms. The loss of a keystone species sets off a chain reaction which alters the structure and biodiversity of their habitat, changing the landscape into something else entirely. Various environmental and human factors have been causing the population of lions to rapidly decrease for over 2 decades.

YouTube Insights: How fandom is shifting video culture

85% of people say they’re a fan of something (or someone), and it’s even higher for Gen Z (89%)2. As viewers look to video culture as a way to dive into their passions and fully explore their fandom, viewership is no longer just about passively consuming content.

Viewers once participated in their fandoms by consumption — now, they do it by creating content. This isn’t limited to super fans, either — as new tools, Shorts, and generative AI have made creation easier for all fans - which is why the newest Deadpool film swept the trending lineup on YouTube. The official trailer landed at #1, with fan-fueled reactions and analyses of the trailer claiming two additional top spots.

On YouTube, this large volume of fan content, from reaction videos to costume recreations, deep dives, and commentary means that viewers often spend more time with fan content than the actual original source material.

Can you imagine a world without giraffe?

'With only approximately 117,000 giraffe remaining in the wild, giraffe were listed as Vulnerable to Extinction on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2016. Giraffe numbers in Africa have plummeted by a staggering 30% over the last 30 years alone, and likely more than 90% in the last century.'

'In the BBC documentary “Giraffe: Africa’s Gentle Giants”—featuring GCF’s important work in Africa—Sir David Attenborough referred to this decline as a “Silent Extinction.” These alarming numbers serve as a reminder that we need to protect giraffe now before it is too late.' But don't let their size fool you. Hippos can run faster than 30 miles per hour, whereas the fastest human, Usain Bolt, has only clocked in at 23.4 miles per hour.

There are only two hippo species in the world...the pygmy hippo (who inhabits the forests and wetlands of West Africa) is listed as endangered, while the common hippopotamus (found mainly in sub-Saharan grasslands) is listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species

How people interact with business has changed significantly. A few key outtakes from the Meta Agency Summit held earlier today.

Connect evolution. 72% of media time globally is now being spent on digital channels.

Storytelling explosion. Everyone has a Hollywood studio in their pocket with more ways to tell your story than ever before. As a brand, if you tell a good story, you will build believability.

Expectation accelerated. Digital is the norm…meaning personalisation of experience is now expectation, not exception.

The collapse of the funnel creates a new kind of storytelling. Meet the customer where, when and how it matters most to them.

Short form video is hugely popular. 190 billion reels are being played every single day across Meta’s platforms. It is the fastest growing format on Facebook and Instagram. Use Reels as an additive strategy to enhance your marketing campaign.

Artificial intelligence is having quite a moment. +173% conversation topic growth on Instagram. AI is not new. Facebook started using the AI powered news feed in 2006.

3 Marketing trends to watch in 2024.

How do we keep our brands human in an AI world?

1. Blending imagination and Science. More than 80% of marketing experts use AI in their strategy. Analysing data to improve optimisation.

2. Truth. People build the brand. Truth is stories shared. Embrace African authenticity. Brand transparency.

3. Data privatisation. Brand trust. Consumer protection.

Outtake: use AI to enhance and enable marketing performance.

U.K. consumers are having a serious case of wanderlust!

Not only is a trip or holiday rental the largest purchase British consumers of any age expect to make in the next few months, but they’re also willing to go anywhere, with search interest for "flights anywhere" now double what it was before the pandemic.

With increased search interest for terms containing "flights including" and "holiday packages", holidaymakers are looking for ways to control their budgets by going for bundled offerings or all-inclusive deals.

3 ways U.K. consumers are adapting the way they plan their travel right now.

1. Value is the starting point
Search interest in the U.K. for "cheapest places" in the travel category suggests price-sensitivity is guiding people’s choice of destination...holidaymakers are looking for ways to control their budgets by going for bundled offerings or all-inclusive deals.

2. (More) planning is part of the adventure
With the majority of discovery, planning, and consideration now happening online, the planning journey has become part of the adventure. In fact, people spend nearly three times longer planning, booking, and daydreaming about their trip than they do on the trip itself (74% planning vs. 26% travelling).

3. Priorities are on the move
The last few years have put a lot of pressure on the travel sector, with consumer demands shifting. For example, a 30% uplift in search interest for "solo travel" in the U.K. suggests people are more willing to travel alone as they no longer want to wait for others.
..there’s also an increased desire to make new connections and find community, with search interest rising for “small group tours”. This trend is visible across age groups, with the over-50s and 60s as likely to hunt for travel tours as Millennials or Gen Zers.

Today we reflect on Endangered Species Day, with the aim to raise awareness around the importance of wildlife conservation and the endangered species that need our protection.

The Mammal Red List of South Africa provides an up-to-date assessment of the conservation status of our mammals, of which 57 (17%) are deemed to be threatened with extinction, and 34 (10%) are Near Threatened.

These include the ground pangolin (Smutsia temminckii), also known as Temminck's pangolin, both the black and white rhinos, the African wild dog, the Cape mountain zebra, the Riverine rabbit and cheetah to name a few.

What are the fastest growing Social Media Platforms of 2023 so far? [New Data]

Instagram
It's no shocker that Instagram is one of the favorites among multiple generations. Between May and January, usage by consumers we surveyed grew 6%. While the channel continues to win over Gen Z and gain attention from Boomers, it might be losing some of its Millennial audience.

LinkedIn
Between May and January LinkedIn grew 20% amongst consumers surveyed, boosted by Boomers.

Twitter
Despite fluctuations in leadership, Elon Musk's controversial takeover, and office-wide changes at the company, Twitter's social media platform is still holding a strong user base and grew 7% among our consumer audience.

BeReal, Twitch and TikTok also saw growth since last May.

Interestingly enough, Reddit, Pinterest, and YouTube are losing steam compared to their competition. Excited to see what the rest of 2023 has in store for us...

Today we create awareness around the world's most trafficked mammal, the Pangolin, on

Roasted pangolin scales have historically featured in some traditional medicine treatments for detoxification, to drain pus, relieve palsy, and stimulate lactation. More recently pangolins have also been consumed for their meat, skins, scales and claws, and demand is now decimating pangolin populations worldwide.

New data from TRAFFIC confirms that at least 23.5 tonnes of pangolins and their parts were trafficked in 2021 alone. All eight species of pangolin are listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species and prohibited from international commercial trade under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

'Pangolins are very important in the whole ecosystem that we have... If you lose pangolins you upset all sorts of things but the sheer humanity of not looking after such a beautiful gentle animal as a pangolin breaks my heart.' Sir David Attenborough

Celebrating
Raising awareness around zebra conservation.

Zebras are odd-toed ungulates and thus belong to the Perissodactyla order. There are three extant families within this order: Equidae (horses, asses, and zebras), Rhinocerotidae (rhinos), and Tapiridae (tapirs).

There are three species of zebra found in the wild:
1. Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi). The Grevy's zebra is one of Africa's most endangered large mammals.
2. (Cape) Mountain zebra (E. zebra). listed as vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
3. Plains zebra (E. quagga) - Most common zebra, pictured.

3 things marketers can learn from the most powerful YouTube trends of 2022

1. Leverage the power of communities
Across moments and geographies, viewers are forging connections with communities online that they may not interact with elsewhere. Find ways to encourage participation from online groups who have specific personal interests and lean into them....understand what motivates an audience to engage.

2. Meet audiences on their turf
Engaging audiences successfully in one format often means that viewers will follow you from screen to screen...use short-form video apps to help audiences discover things that they then watch longer versions of.

*According to a Google study, adding a vertical creative asset to a Video action campaign delivered 10% to 20% more conversions per dollar on YouTube Shorts than using landscape assets alone.

3. Take the time to create innovative, fun Shorts
In the past, viral short-form videos often resulted from accidental, random moments captured on camera. But these days, Shorts are less off-the-cuff, and more crafted and intentional. The best short-form videos embrace the format’s strength and encourage people to watch them again and again.

Today is World Rhino Day and there is a glimmer of hope!

However, the threat is still real...and South Africa remains a Rhino poaching hotspot.

'Overall rhino poaching rates have declined since 2018, and trade data suggests the lowest annual estimate of rhino horns entering illegal trade markets since 2013, according to a new report by the IUCN SSC African and Asian Rhino Specialist Groups and TRAFFIC.' IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, August 2022

The report finds that rhino poaching rates in Africa have continued to decline from a peak of 5.3% of the total population in 2015 to 2.3% in 2021. At least 2,707 rhinos were poached across Africa between 2018 and 2021, accounting for both the white rhino (Ceratotherium simum), which is Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™, and the rarer Critically Endangered black rhino (Diceros bicornis). South Africa accounted for 90% of all reported cases, predominantly affecting white rhinos in Kruger National Park, home to the world’s largest white rhino population.

“To support the growth of rhino numbers, it is essential to continue active population management and anti-poaching activities for all subspecies across different range states.” Sam Ferreira, Scientific Officer with the IUCN SSC African Rhino Specialist Group
