Forgiveness and grace allow for growth. We all can do with some - even if the people we forgive are ourselves.
🇹🇹
'There are many things I am grateful for. However, there are many things I look back on with regret. The notorious ear-biting incident that would become the pun of my life is one of those moments. I am sincerely appreciative that I had an opportunity to make amends for my actions and that Evander was gracious enough to forgive me. I have a great deal of respect for him and I'm glad our legacy as human beings doesn't have to be defined by this one disastrous moment.'

Giveon can go from baritone to falsetto in little time, but it has the desired effect in capturing the listener in the stories he tells of love, heartbreak and finding one’s way. On “Lost Me”, he evokes the same emotions with amazing impact.
Burna Boy has had an incredible stream of success in the last five years. And his newest album, “Love, Damini” is set to shoot him into superstardom. It is why we think his forthcoming single, “For My Hand” which features Ed Sheeran is a sure hit.
The Grammy-Award winning vocalist, producer and keyboardist taps deep into the soul and his gospel roots (being the son of Bishop Paul S. Morton) to bring us this amazing uplifting sermon in song. Accompanied by equally talented vocalists Zacardi Cortez, Gene Moore, Samoht, Tim Rogers and Darrel “Musiq City” Walls, the song reminds us all that even in the most troubling of times, we are not alone, and that even the darkest days come to an end. It’s the perfect lift many may need when they didn’t expect it.

Our third music pick this week comes from Daniel Caesar, “Please Do Not Lean”.
Daniel Caesar has seemingly been silent since 2019, but the time away apparently has been well spent crafting slow burners like “Please Do Not Lean”. Delivered in his inimitable tenor, Caesar is telling his lover that while he wishes to remain happy in the relationship, he knows he may not be able to fulfill the expectations desired of him. Produced by fellow Canadian collective BADBADNOTGOOD, the song contains harmonies not uncommon to 90s R&B ballads, yet with a switch in tone, remains modern and quite intriguing. It’s the best return of sorts for one of the best male R&B vocalists within the last decade.

Our second pick this week comes from Skinny Fabulous, “No Bad Vibes”
With regional carnival celebrations bubbling with anticipation, St. Vincent & The Grenadines’ own Skinny Fabulous pushes ahead with this Groovy opener. One of the lead singles from the Space Man Riddim produced by Drillz International and Mr.Legz HT, “No Bad Vibes” fits the overall positive vibe Skinny brings whether it’s his own recording or songs written for others. Here, he emphasizes that his zone is only for positivity and not to bring others down. The track is well produced with decent live instrumentation and with Skinny’s vocals, an upbeat mood to usher in festival time.
After 30-plus years in the recording industry, Mary J. Blige is established as a legend in Hip-Hop & R&B. Her voice, along with her fashion sense (an amazing mix of designer and street that has defined her since the early 1990s) has set her apart and has underlined her appeal. Therefore, when she explained the reasoning behind “Good Morning Gorgeous” which is also the title track of her album, Mary exposed a still vulnerable side of her that many all but assumed went away over a decade ago after her documented and self-narrated struggles with self-esteem and substance abuse. While the song expresses her vulnerability, it isn’t all negative as she also puts forward her own affirmations that she is worth it for herself. Her vocals are paired on the remix by none other than H.E.R., who also co-wrote and co-produced with D’Mile and Mary herself. As an admirer of Mary, H.E.R. trading vocals here is less a moment of bridging generations and more a perfect matching of two peers who are relevant to the entire genre.

As our extended weekend continues, our third pick comes from Koffee, “Run Away”.
The latest single from her RCA Records debut “Gifted”, Koffee sets a mood of fantasy and escaping from life’s ups and downs. Her vocals and lyrics have matured as she singa about enlisting a loved one in her quest to drift away to an undetermined location where they can enjoy the atmosphere and one another’s company. The rhythmic dancehall selection is breezy yet bright, and produced by JLL who features live drums and jazz-influenced electric guitars woven into the track. It’s another brilliant hit from Koffee, and shows her growth as a young artist.
Normani continues to grow as one of R&B’s rising stars, and “Fair”, a haunting tale of lingering heartbreak is an impressive follow-up to the smash success that was “Wild Side” which featured Cardi B and was released in late 2021.
“Fair” sees Normani at her most vulnerable, wistfully remembering a lost love and lamenting that she hasn’t recovered from the breakup. Her vocals are perfect in expressing the hurt, while the spare production enhances the sadness evident in the song. It’s one of the better offerings in contemporary R&B, and while it sounds refined, it isn’t overdone.

It’s Saturday!
Hope you’re having a safe and enjoyable Easter Weekend!
It’s time for the Weekly Music Round-Up!
Our first pick this week comes from Joel “Zan”Feveck, “Gone Already”
After a Carnival 2022 season that saw songs like “Sunshine And Wine”, “Never Again” and “Carnival Survivors” (with Kernal Roberts) featured prominently on the airwaves, Zan returns on another Chinese Laundry Music & Maha Productions project. The second single from the forthcoming Afro Soca Project, Zan’s excellent vocals match the mellowed production as he sings about mentally detaching from a relationship at its inevitable end and finding happiness for himself. The riddim’s pace is good to groove along with, and the lyrics are relatable and will encourage singing along to in your car or even a fete.

It would be indeed regrettable on our part if we didn’t add our tribute to Dexter Blaxx Stewart.
We are quite certain that the adage “don’t wait till people are gone to give them their flowers” doesn’t apply to Blaxx, as he was undoubtedly loved by the people he performed for as well as his peers and those he mentored and even those he gave a “chance” to perform with the bands he was involved with.
Truly a man of the people, Blaxx endeared himself to everyone by giving his all in every performance, whether it was a cooler fete, all-inclusive, boat ride, or a backyard lime - even in the face of his own challenges. His unmistakable vocal and trademark “ban yuh belly!” was a signal to get any party atmosphere up to and above 100. We hope that with every time any of his songs - from “Tusty” (2007) to “Leh Go” (2013) to even 2022’s “Mash Up” - are played, Blaxx is never forgotten as one of the greatest performers of our artform without ever losing the common touch.
Rest in Power.

Our third pick this week comes from Chronixx, “Never Give Up”.
Chronixx quietly returns to the roots reggae scene with this beautiful rocking selection. Produced by Yardman Flow, the music goes straight to the roots with driving percussion, muted drums and Chronixx’s unmistakable voice encouraging all to not forsake their dreams, desires and life in general. Accentuated by harmonies and an interpolation of The Wailer’s “Get Up, Stand Up”, a wiser, mellowed Chronixx gives his audience encouragement and motivation like no other.
By now, you’re probably familiar with “City Of Gods” as performed by Fivio Foreign and Kanye West, featuring Alicia Keys on the chorus.
For Alicia’s version, the Brooklyn drill drum pattern is stripped away, leaving the synth and piano. “City Of Gods (Part II)” as Alicia delivers it is the third part of her tributes to her native New York City, the first being “Streets of New York” (2003) modeled after NAS’ “NY State Of Mind” (1994), which was followed by “Empire State Of Mind (Pt. II)”, which expanded the JAY-Z original (2009). This time though, an older Alicia sings as someone who seems slightly heartbroken watching the changes her city is undergoing, and begging it to not leave her as it moves forward - and as she herself has changed her residential address. In turning it from Drill to R&B, Alicia has thrown more weight on the song and has created another powerful ode to NYC.
Coming almost immediately after the enjoyable “Jolene” (which is also available as part of a single package on Apple Music), Kees teams up with Haitian-born singer J. Perry and producer Michael Brun (along with “Jolene” producer Dwala) to bring a percussive, breezy fusion of Soca and Haitian Kompa. The opening guitar sets a relaxed beach party scene, with the interplay between Kees’ and J. Perry’s vocals in local dialect and Kweyòl respectively make for a seductive yet appealing song, the chorus of which perfectly mimics the bottle-and-spoon percussion to go along with the vibe created.

The most beautiful thing about “Essence” isn’t that Wizkid continues his run in making Naija pop a global force, but how he lets “Essence” be the vehicle to let Tems shine - and shine she does. The song is playful and flirtatious, but Tems entreaties to a potential suitor are also confident and decisive. “Essence” is well executed from beginning to end, and is that song that had a perfect lap during the summer months and still has staying power because…it’s that song. I have zero reservations in calling this our favorite song of 2021.
And there you have it! We’ve counted down the top 21 songs of 2021. The entire countdown will soon be available on our podcast, and the transcript will soon be available (like tomorrow!) on losgents.com.
We thank you for rocking with us in 2021 and we look forward to serving you with nothing but hits in 2022.
2020 was the year when Machel Montano got married, declared that year’s Machel Monday concert his last and seemed ready to wind down his frenetic annual Carnival activities to a more sedate life and new business ventures. But in the light of a worldwide pandemic and a cancelled Trinidad & Tobago Carnival, Machel dropped this gem on his 46th birthday, which speaks about finding blessings in the midst of adversity, finding one’s higher self and truly being happy. As the hit of the Beach Chair Riddim, “High Life” (produced by Kyle Walcott and co-written by Problem Child) encourages the listener to keep going and maintain a positive outlook.
The Backyard Jam Riddim, produced by De Red Boyz has featured prominently on this countdown because it’s overall feel-good vibe is undeniable. The artist contributions have also bolstered its status as a top tier instrumental production, and who less than frequent collaborator Farmer Nappy to feature on the title track? Adding to the joyous groove, Nappy’s lyrics and vocal are devised to make lime juice out of limes - since there isn’t Carnival, what is stopping a backyard lime within reason? Like the other songs on the Riddim, it is highly infectious and gives light to a seemingly (and hopefully temporary) dark situation and illustrates when you can’t go big, go small but carry the same joy wherever you are.
