.
As an enthusiast of The Omen series, admittedly I was against the idea of “The First Omen” released in 2024. A prequel 48 years after the 1976 masterpiece The Omen seemed a risky way to resurrect the series.
The First Omen, set in 1971 is the story of a young American Novitiate, Margret joining a Nunnery in Rome to receive her vail. Amidst the durry smoking mostly welcoming Nuns the story builds toward something more sinister. It is a no brainer that our Satan is at it again, spawning his son to reign supreme over humanity and in the same vein as all The Omen instalments it is not without the help of his devout followers.
The First Omen was casted perfectly with Nell Tiger Free (Servant), who acted the most convincing & agonised (non-CGI) possession scene I have witnessed since The Exorcist. Nell is supported perfectly by Bill Nighy (The Boat That Rocks), Ralph Ineson (The Witch), and a mention must go to all the actors who gave a solid performance made even better by a convincingly dark written script.
The cinematography was exemplary, providing the experience of watching a seventies film from the unpolished vintage style visuals, muted colouring to the era specific zooming and angles all tying in with the movie being set in Rome, made for an aesthetically pleasing watch. The soundscapes and music scores are ominously nostalgic playing a menacing ode to the classics within the series and giving more power to the subtle satanic hints.
With its slow but far from uninteresting start, The First Omen was not without a familiar scene or two and would it even be a mainstream horror without the pesky loud jump scare albeit brief, but this style of scare was never going to be harmonised with the true essence of The Omen series.
The finale stages of the The First Omen set the tone well for the 1976 cult classic, it is smart and tastefully done. It might not be scary, but it is a solid watch centred around how it all began for our much beloved Damien.
The First Omen is now free on Disney plus in Australia. Ave Satani!

Headlining this diabolical event of brutal Death Metal and launching their much-anticipated new EP, Vile Enrapture, is Death Metal heavies from Orange INFESTED ENTRAILS who promises to pulverise you in every direction.

Supporting Infested Entrails and hailing from Sydney are the chainsaw sounding Death Core band, Shiva in a much anticipated and rare live performance.

This show would not be complete without Newcastle Death Metal favourites Plague Dweller afflicting their weighted noise in your ears.

Pressing the trigger to set things off are home grown Death Metal lads, Fall From Heaven who are getting traction amongst the Newcastle and NSW scenes’ by smearing their stain on some deadly live bills, so let’s help push their rise and get in early to support them.

Newcastle, you will not want to miss this, Legion Ov Death will leave you beaten. PIT, BLEED, REPEAT!

Nothing quite beats stumbling across an offering that blows your head off and that is exactly what happened when I clicked on the album, Altar of Disgust (AoD). Released May 3rd, 2024, AoD comes six years after Crawl’s debut album, Rituals, which I’ll be sure to listen to once I can move past this latest powerhouse of an album by this Death/Crust mob of four from Sweden.
.
Altar of Disgust hurls eleven blistering metal compositions spanning 30 minutes of heavy massacring basslines, wickedly filthy breakdowns, and deliciously threatening percussion time signature changes, trending the album between a full throttle barrage of insanely deadly and speedy riffs and slower despotic chords. The unrelenting force of the monster vocals across this album is such a key element to Crawl’s fully penetrating and ferociously convincing sound.
.
While some might hear nostalgia of other Swedish metal bands, with subtle homage to Dismember & even hints toward Meshuggah influence, Crawl are giving the traditional sounds of such, a face lift by clashing it perfectly with crusty punk beats and super tight grooves layered on the violent sounding melodies with punchy tempos. Altar of Disgust shows off a sharp production allowing you to experience the clarity of their heaviness yet, Crawl have managed to keep an element of their overall atmosphere gritty and gutsy as they sq**rt their fresh twist on the genre of Swedish Death Metal.
.
Altar of Disgust is a fat juicy listen and is a significant contribution toward solidifying that Death Metal is on a rampage in 2024. Altar of Disgust by Crawl is available on Bandcamp, hit these lads up with a follow on their socials and put this beast of an album on maximum volume! It is a proper head banger, and your neck will be in your hands at the end of it!
.
Fav tracks from this juicy chunk of filth are:
Until They Crawl
Knives
Enslaved in Filth
.
Kelly Tee’s Fav Track Disclaimer: Christ on a stick all of them, they are all monstrous.

Ave, Crawl! You have blown me away.

Chained is a 2012 Canadian psychological horror film directed by Jennifer Lynch and starring the ever-quirky Vincent D’Onofrio as Bob who is an extremely misogynistic and unhinged serial killer with an uncontrollable vendetta against woman. The movie centres around the murderous and pain inflicting tendencies of Bob who is a product of his devastatingly violent and cruel childhood.
Killing is Bobs addiction and he doesn’t let anything get in his way of this quest for blood, perversion, and power, even if one of his victims is accompanied by her son and so, abducting and grooming a child to assist him in his heinous mess seemed the right thing to do.
Chained is raw, gritty, and unapologetic in challenging your anxiety with convincingly jarring and sinister scenes. Amidst all the horrendous acts of violence and assaults and a complex story of what seems to be Stockholm Syndrome overtime, director Lynch casted D’Onofrio perfectly to ease us only minimally on occasions throughout this macabre film with snippets of D’Onofrio’s eccentric acting style, and while this film is far removed from anything humorous, it is hard not to smirk at some of Bob’s dialog and awkwardly obscure actions. Alas, these quirky moments, which might not relieve everyone is not without the tormented, scared, and meek captive, who is always in a forlorn state of fear and despair…and rightly so.
Chained is a film I decided to put myself through a second time after viewing years ago and the second time hit even harder. Chained is a difficult watch entirely and is continually shocking and disturbing. Executed with class, the director shows you enough to know what Bob’s victims are enduring, enough to be disturbing with a purpose to create complete unease.
Chained is intense and translates the meaning of horror without only solely being created for ridiculous shock and disgust value (unlike other films that are not worth mentioning).
There is no mistaking that depravity is this films core, and I am forever surprised that fans of the genre, do not speak of this film more.
You can watch Chained on Prime Video (AUS)and other streaming platforms.

Hell House LLC, released in 2015 is the first of 4 movies in the Hell House LLC franchise, written and directed by Stephen Cognetti. This supernatural found footage horror follows a group of ambitious friends who procure an old run-down hotel in a town in the middle of bum f**k nowhere with the aim to live in the hotel while they transform it into a walk through “haunt” just in time for Halloween. What could go wrong right? Well, pretty much everything.
.
Hell House, LLC shoots to deliver unsettling scenes by using dark eerie camera angles and creepy props to work its method of often blurring the lines between harmless pranks and inhuman entities with sinister intensions with the latter working on translating how vulnerable and under threat the main characters are within the walls of this hotel of hell.
.
Much unlike so many other found footage movies that lose their momentum with too many lulls between the poor attempts to frighten you with pesky jump scares, Hell House LLC maintains its pace outside of the goosebump inducing scares by keeping the quieter moments to a minimum for the sake of the continuation of building on the ever-present suspense and dread.
.
Cognetti has tied the scenes together well and while this movie urgers on the side of the “less is more” rule, Cognetti only gives a little space for viewer interpretation and wraps this up with a neat little twist ending and hints toward the hotel door being left open in the Hell House brand for more unwilling victims to walk through.
.
With all found footage films comes potential cons, the always semi slow start, the B grade way of trying to act naturally and the genre signature shaky shooting. These cons weren’t enough to spoil the movie for me in anyway.
.
In this current world of subpar, predictable, and stupid horror film releases, this gem is a decently creepy watch and one that shouldn’t just be enjoyed at Halloween.
.
Hell House, LLC is a lot of fun, and is often an uneasy and spooky watch.
.
Hell House, LLC Run Time: 83 minutes.
Streaming in Australia: Shudder

Join with me in supporting our resident Slave To The Underground host and incredibly talented human both musically and visual artist, Matt Priso as his Solo Project S*K debut’s its album, Cast Below To Rise Above.
.
Cast Below To Rise Above is a 6 track conceptual album about one man’s desperate plight to empower himself within the underworld by relentlessly summoning the almighty and feared Demon Belial. The awakening of Belial means only one thing and that is to conquer and reign upon earth and this album translates this story in its entirety in a crushing display of originality, heaviness and conviction.
The album was not created without some deadly collaborations, with Robin Stone on drums, Rose Baylis on cello, Tim Pope (the Amenta) intro outro samples/soundscapes & Jason Peppiatt (Psycroptic) on vocals as the summoned demon, Belial.
You can listen to Cast Below to Rise Above on Bandcamp & Spotify, and please get behind Matt’s project S*k, as well as Spells Ov Torment and his visual art page, S*k Abyss. He is one to always support the underground, its now time to pay it forward motherf**kers!
