The Devotion Project The Devotion Project is a series of short docs celebrating the love and commitment of LGBTQ couples.
(2)

The Devotion Project is filmmaker Antony Osso’s two-part campaign: a series of short documentaries celebrating the love and commitment of LGBTQ+ couples, and The Devotion Project social media platform, where his mission has been to promote “Good Gay News,” stories of LGBTQ+ people thriving in relationships, politics, sports, the arts and beyond. What began for Osso a decade ago as a desire to docu

ment LGBTQ+ couples in long-term relationships has grown into the Project’s social media presence, amplifying and sharing uplifting stories of LGBTQ+ success, progress, and firsts, free of the frequent bias in the media that portrays the community as beleaguered victims or second-class citizens. Osso shot the films between 2011-13, and they went on to win 17 awards at 55 film festival screenings. They’ve been featured in OUT Magazine and on the Oprah Winfrey Network, and have amassed over 1.2 million views on YouTube. The first film in the series, "More Than Ever," presents the incredible 54-year love story of Bill Campbell and John Hilton. This segment aired on OWN’s The Rosie Show on Veterans’ Day 2011, and has won five festival awards. New York hairdresser Paul Labrecque and his husband Brian Cantor are featured in the second film, "Say Only Yes.”

Shot in Oakland, CA, "Listen from the Heart" chronicles the bond between Jaime Jenett, Laura Fitch and their son Simon Lev Fitch-Jenett, who was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy at the age of four months. The fourth film, "My Person," features Eric Plemons, a trans man, his wife Anne and their daughter Jonah. The fifth film, “Build Your Wings,” features Daniel Pando and Vitor Braga Lara, a young couple in NYC who, at the age of 25, were celebrating their eighth anniversary.

“Foremost in my Mind,” the final film, features New York couple Gail Marquis and Audrey Smaltz, who met when Audrey was 61 years old. It launched online on Valentine’s Day 2013 and has won six festival awards. The English-language films can also be found subtitled in Spanish, Russian, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch and German on our YouTube channel and at our official website. “The fact that people are so happy for us is a gift,” Ms. Roberts said. “And it’s not just a gift for us. It’s a gift for those who are in areas of this country who may have a parent or grandparent who doesn’t quite see it like this, but they see us, and they see that we just love each other. We’re very boring, but we just love each other.”

The couple were wed Sept. 8 in an intimate ceremony at their home in Farmington, Conn. The newlyweds spoke to The New York Times in an exclusive interview about their relationship.

When Kenneth Felts began work on a memoir at age 90, he found himself filled with regrets over a secret gay love affair. So he came out — privately and publicly — which inspired Johnny Hau to do the same.

"During Pride Month, we honor a movement that has grown stronger, more vibrant, and more inclusive with every passing year. Pride is a celebration of generations of LGBTQI+ people, who have fought bravely to live openly and authentically. And it is a reminder that we still have generational work to do to ensure that everyone enjoys the full promise of equity, dignity, protection, and freedom."

It's with a heavy heart that we say farewell to John V. Hilton, who passed away this weekend at the age of 88. We were so lucky to meet John in 2011, and to begin our series with "More Than Ever," the short film celebrating his 54-year love story with Bill Campbell. Bill passed unexpectedly only five weeks after we shot the film, and John repeatedly credited The Devotion Project with giving him a 'third life,' full of new friendships and experiences. We're so grateful that he was willing to share his life and love with us. Many condolences go out to his friends and family.

Great article on masculinity as a prison and an eternal renunciation. Brian Broome writes:

Over a lifetime, the expectations around masculinity are random and often border on the absurd. I once saw a tweet from a woman who suggested that she has no use for a man who orders dessert because eating sweets was feminine. A recent thread from one of my favorite Instagram accounts asked its male followers to name behaviors they’d been told were feminine and thus forbidden from adopting. The list included: wearing sandals, using sunscreen or umbrellas, cat ownership, apologizing, the color pink and — this is my favorite — playing a wind instrument.
Many of the men wrote about what they weren’t permitted to do with their bodies, such as crossing their legs at the knee or putting their hands on their hips. It was all quite restrictive — and if men believe these things, it is partly because of the warnings they heard at an early age from their friends, their fathers and the culture at large.

But the reaction to Mulvaney’s milestone reminds us of how problematic these ideas of masculinity can be. If conventional views of manliness could be reduced to a recipe, I’d guess it would be one part stoicism, two parts anger, three parts lust, four parts control over women. This cocktail can be dangerous, creating men who struggle to process complex emotions, deal with negative feelings in a healthy way, or even express love.
Men need to move beyond the idea that dominating other human beings and engaging in endless emotional barricading is how to show the world that they’re “masculine.” The concept needs a de-gendering. Perhaps to some, masculinity only means that you are self-assured, confident, not easily threatened and won’t be told what to do, what you can’t wear, whom you can love. But there are literally millions of people who possess these traits regardless of s*x or gender identity.

If your idea of “masculine” is just a hatred of anything that someone told you is “feminine,” then I don’t know what to tell you except that, as a human being, you are entitled to the whole human experience. Not just part of it.

Bud Light is for everyone — not just straight men.

"Not for a moment did she entertain the possibility that something was wrong with him. Not for a moment did she wonder, as the otherwise supportive Jules initially did, if his gayness reflected some failing of theirs as parents. And not for a moment did she worry about how other people would react; she told her sisters and friends right away, making plain that she was fine with the information and they had better be, too. 'You don’t love him in spite of something,' she later declared on national television, her face free of shadow or blur. 'You love him.'"
