/ THE BRIEF 2023 EDITION 2 - ‘ALL OF OUR FUTURE’ //
The second edition of The Brief 2023, ‘All of Our Future’ is out now!

This edition explores how law and policy affect young people, future generations and their interests. Inside, you will find articles discussing the need to include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people in policy-making, youth activism, LGBTQ+ protections in educational institutions and a discussion of student debt in Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States.

I want to thank the talented and dedicated writers, sub-editors and the designer of Edition 2. Thank you for lending your voice and interpretation of the theme to challenge our perspectives of the law! To our returning and new readers, please enjoy this edition here on Issuu:

/ THE BRIEF 2023 EDITION 1 - ‘WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN?’ //

The first edition of The Brief 2023, ‘Who Watches the Watchmen?’ is out now!

This edition explores the concept of accountability and how effective our legal mechanisms are in holding public institutions to account. Inside, you will find articles discussing the ongoing Robodebt Royal Commission, the need for more judicial accountability mechanisms and how family court procedures sometimes allow children's safety to slip through the cracks. The rule of law is only as strong as the checks and balances that appropriately restrain the gatekeepers of the law. Without these mechanisms, we are left with the question: ‘Who watches the watchmen?’

I want to thank the talented and dedicated writers, sub-editors and the designer of Edition 1. Thank you for lending your voice and interpretation of the theme to challenge our perspectives of the law! To our returning and new readers, please enjoy this edition.

Democracy can be a beautiful thing but it is too easy to take for granted. Many have fought and died to ensure our governments are all-inclusive and so it is up to us to hold them accountable. The watchers of the watchmen must start with us.

// THE BRIEF EDITION 3 - 'TIGHTROPE' //
The third and final edition of The Brief 2022, 'Tightrope', is out now!

‘Tightrope’ is an exploration of how our legal system balances risk. This edition investigates the way the law supports us in taking risks whilst simultaneously being required to protect us from them. It allows us to be critical of times we are put at risk when the law fails to safeguard our private rights. Through ’Tightrope’, we consider the extent to which the law enables or hinders our lives.

I extended enormous gratitude towards the writers, sub-editors and designer of ‘Tightrope’. Thank you for bringing your creativity, critical-eye and diligence to
this edition of The Brief. Your ideas have inspired us, provoked thought and encouraged us to engage with the law beyond our formal studies. As always, I am extremely grateful for the continued support of both our new and returning readers. I trust that you will enjoy this edition; be brave, take risks and closely hold the law as you walk this tightrope with us.

Verneet Virk investigates the recent proposed budget cuts to NSW's key integrity agencies. A further questioning of whether such cuts will make governments less accountable and more capable of decisions that go against the public good is taken into consideration.

The NSW government has declared a defacto war on state integrity bodies. The government has outlined budget cuts to integrity agencies which opens the door
