Episode 5 launches Monday at 8am! We had a great conversation with Southern Ohio Bruisers Roller Derby team captain, Niki Taylor! 💜 She helped to introduce this sport and bust any myths surrounding it. We loved learning more about teamwork, too! Tune in Monday, 2/5 at 8am EST here: https://open.spotify.com/show/2xlJEl0lRqB10J8ayGC2QP
“Hello, my name is Niki Taylor. I grew up on a Dairy farm in Crown City, OH, which is in the southern part of Gallia County. In 2003 I moved to Jackosn county for a job with Adena Health System. Then in 2006 I met my future husband, Zack Taylor, we married in 2008. He brought into my life my beautiful stepdaughter Payton. Then in 2010, we welcomed our son Roderick AKA Roddy and yes, he was named after Roddy Piper.
In 2015, I saw an ad on Facebook from Heather Blazer saying that she wanted to start a Roller Derby Team. Now this was dream of mine to play even though I knew little about the sport. The team started out as Silver Bridge Bruisers in Gallipolis Oh. In 2016 we moved to Jackson skating rink, where the team still practices at.
Roller Derby has taught me that I need to work outside my comfort zone to better myself. That I should never compare myself to others, we are all different. We all learn and develop at our pace. Also, If something does not work out, you had better change it the next time you do it. Let’s just say you only get hit once standing straight up on roller skates. Lastly and the most cliche of all if you fall get back up. Never lay just lay there, you get up and try again, at least roll to the side and get out of the way before someone else falls over you. 😊
Presently, I am mother to two wonderful children that I could not be prouder of, a wife to my wonderful husband. I am still working for Adena Health but as a Director in IT. The team has changed their name to Southern Ohio Bruiser, to be more representative of our skater; while I have taken on more of a coaching role. The team realize we would not be any where without support, so we try to give back any chance we can by working to improve and support our community. I would not change anything about the past 9 years they have given me so many opportunities I would not have had otherwise.
PS we are always recruiting!”
