The AMERICANS and the HOLOCAUST exhibition has arrived in Amarillo. Here, Library Program Specialist Cynthia Hunt can be seen with some of the massive packing crates which contain the exhibition. When assembled, AMERICANS and the HOLOCAUST will occupy 1,100 square feet in the Downtown Library.
AMERICANS and the HOLOCAUST opens to the public on Saturday, September 17, and will be available for viewing during library hours through Sunday, October 23 at the Downtown Library.
While the exhibition is in place, Amarillo Public Library will offer a series of lectures and films designed to bring greater understanding of events and themes covered in AMERICANS and the HOLOCAUST. There is no charge to attend these events or to view the exhibition.
The traveling exhibition, created by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and the American Library Association, examines the motives, pressures, and fears that shaped Americans’ responses to Na**sm, war, and genocide in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s. It is based on the special exhibition of the same name at the Museum in Washington, D.C.
Amarillo Public Library is one of only fifty libraries in the country—and the only public library in Texas—chosen to host the exhibition. Host libraries were selected through a competitive, peer-reviewed application process that considered community demographics, library outreach plans, and the availability of other Holocaust-related educational opportunities in the library’s region, among other factors.
