Carrying concealed weapons! This is a white-crowned lapwing (Vanellus albiceps) found throughout tropical Africa, usually seen along riverbanks. These birds lay their eggs on the ground and therefore need to defend the nest area from everything up to and including hippos. While not much use against hippos, like others in their genus, these birds are equipped with spurs which you can see in this image , protruding from their plumage that help them defend their territory. They are quite noisy about defending their territory as well!

There are certain birds that despite the number of images you have and how many thousands or images have been taken by other photographers, we just can't help but take another image. One of the most photographed birds in the world, the lilac-breasted roller.

Eye contact is something I always strive for in my images to create a connection between the image subject and the viewer but it's not easy with cats in Africa. I was so lucky that this Serval stopped to look back at us and even luckier that it was following a path through the long grass! It was dawn with the sun just rising which was perfect for the colour of the long grass and the cat. Servals are shy and quick so not something I expected to be lucky enough to see in the Okavango Delta.

Another quick look at impalas. They are often referred to as the McDonalds antelope due to the M on their rumps. The have large beautiful eyes and ears, perfect for detecting predators and their alarm calls and snorts, often alert other animals to the presence of predators. It could be said that they grow into their ears, legs and eyes as they are born ready to detect and run from predators within a short time of birth.

I have recently published an article on African antelopes so i thought I might share some of my favourite antelope photos, starting with the very common impala which I think is one of the most beautiful and frequently ignored species. They are not only beautiful, but I think a few predators might go hungry if these weren't as abundant as they are! https://wildanimalinfo.com/african-antelope-species/

If you have ever considered a visit to Kenya, Lake Nakuru is fantastic for bird lovers. Not only is it well know for flamingos but even the pelicans there are pink! These are the beautiful pink-backed pelicans (Pelecanus rufescens).

The magnificent black-maned Kalahari lions are undoubtedly the most powerful and impressive lions I have ever seen. As three lionesses with nine cubs between them strolled past our vehicle, I could feel myself holding my breath. Kalahari lions are under threat from habitat loss and other challenges. You can read about these impressive felines in my blog post... https://wildanimalinfo.com/the-magnificent-kalahari-lion/

I was a wildlife carer (birds) for many years, and I can honestly say that despite people's best intentions, many birds and animals lost their lives because they did not get the proper care as soon as possible. Birds are often lost by things as simple as people trying to give them water, causing them to aspirate or get pneumonia. Others die from the stress of handling because people think that they get comfort from being stroked when really they don't. Trying to help an injured animal is always essential, so we have just published an article from the Society for the Preservation of Raptors on what to do if you encounter an injured or orphaned raptor. Have a read if you plan on travelling on country roads or have raptors in your area. https://wildanimalinfo.com/caring-for-injured-and-orphaned-raptors/

Animalinfo Publications

After working with animals for many years, I founded Animalinfo Publications. My name is Diana Andersen and I was concerned about the growing trend for unverified information on animals and animal care being shared on the web and wanted to help make more accurate information available.

It is my firm belief that fewer animals would need rescue if people made better, more educated choices in their dealings with animals.
