My wife, Mary Jane, joins me to take a look back at the groundbreaking 1949 movie Lost Boundaries. This was the film adaptation of the real-life stories of Dr. Albert and Thyra Johnston, who passed for white for nearly 20 years.

You can watch the movie Lost Boundaries on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z26VL_0EQks and the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/details/LostBoundaries.

After I released the most recent Retrocast, cartoonist Leigh Rubin reached out to thank me for sharing the story of his parents—the first Jewish couple to ever be married on national television in the United States. Sadly, I later learned that his wife, Teresa, had suffered brain damage and was in a coma.

In January, a GoFundMe was created to help with the significant long-term costs of her care. After hearing this news, I decided to re-release that episode to help draw attention to their fundraising efforts. If you’d like to contribute, you can do so here: https://gofund.me/60b9afcd

You can listen to that episode here: https://pod.fo/e/323c23

Thanks!

In the 1930s, a British man was forbidden from entering the Soviet Union to reunite with his Russian wife. As the years passed—nearly five in total—his desperation only grew. Eventually, he came up with a bold, some would say reckless, plan to reach her. The odds were against him, and failure would almost certainly mean death. Still, he pressed on. Could he survive the attempt? And if he did, would he ever lay eyes on the woman he loved again?

There are two videos on YouTube about this story:

Brian Grover Home at Last (1939) (British Pathé) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9fJVeQbmjRY

Mr. Grover and His Wife Return Home (British Movietone) - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OXfJgbTvOIQ
