New single from Ross "The Boss/The Baron" Johnson and Cloudland Canyon. Features other Memphis heavies and cover art by Natalie Hoffmann. Rants about women, alcohol, and East Germany with hints of ZE and Brain Records. Limited to 300.

ROSS JOHNSON WITH CLOUDLAND CANYON - “Women, Money, Children” b/w “I Know Why They Leave” 7” - Out now

Ross Johnson (Panther Burns, Alex Chilton, Jeff Evans) teams up with Cloudland Canyon (Kip Uhlhorn) and fellow Memphians on his latest Spacecase single. “Women, Money, Children” covers The Baron’s usual subject matter (see song title) with some stream-of-consciousness forays into East German/Cold War history (Ross drove through the former GDR to West Berlin in his Panther Burns days; I believe this is the first English-language reference to the GDR in a song since The Fall’s “Athlete Cured” back in 1988.) “I Know Why They Leave” is Ross and Kip on a ZE/Brain Records-influenced trip. The single’s top-notch cover design comes courtesy of Natalie Hoffmann (Nots, Optic Sink). Limited to 300 copies.

Out now - THE MARILYNS - “I’m Glad I’m Not a Man” b/w “I’m on Acid” 7”

In between the Klitz and the Hellcats, Memphis had the Marilyns. The (mostly) all-girl group started out playing three-chord rock ‘n’ roll with traditional songs thrown in (Memphis Minnie, Jimmy Reed and Elvis). Headquartered at Mongo’s Pizza, the Marilyns eventually became regulars at the legendary Antenna Club. Just as things started to get rolling, guitarist Kim Kruger moved to L.A. with the Modifiers, ending the first phase of the Marilyns (1984-1985).

The Marilyns regrouped in 1988 with the help of Randy Chertow (Randy Band), expanding to a six-piece. The band recorded at Easley Studios before drummer Thomas Smith moved to NYC, bringing a final end to the Marilyns in 1989. Until now, the group’s recorded output consisted of two locally distributed cassette tapes.

“I’m on Acid” was recorded in 1984 and “I’m Glad I’m not a Man” was cut in 1988 at Easley Studios. This 7” is limited to 300 copies. For fans of the Klitz, Pandoras and Hellcats.

The Marilyns (1984-1985)

Jeannie Tomlinson-Saltmarsh (bass, vocals)

The Marilyns (1988-1989)

Memphis-based synth project General Labor's debut single is out now! For fans of Robert Rental, early Destruction Unit and Optic Sink.

“Illuminator” b/w ”Tastes Metallic” is the debut single from General Labor. General Labor is the Memphis-based project of Corbin Linebarier. It’s the sound of electronic music done right. Think Robert Rental, early Destruction Unit, and fellow Memphians Optic Sink and Cloudland Canyon (who...
