The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is an annual event held on the Spring Bank Holiday at Cooper's Hill, at Brockworth near Gloucester, England. Participants race down the 200-yard long hill chasing a wheel of Double Gloucester cheese. The tradition is believed to be centuries old, with the earliest written record dating back to 1826. The event is unofficial and not organized by any local authorities, but it continues to draw participants from all over the world.
The cheese rolling is a dangerous event, with the steep hill and loose ground causing many participants to tumble and fall. Injuries are common, but this doesn't seem to deter people from taking part in this wacky tradition. The winner of the race is the first person to cross the finish line at the bottom of the hill, regardless of whether they catch the cheese. The prize for winning is, of course, the cheese itself ๐
