Some BTS of our Halloween short to tide the spirits over…
It gets dark FAST these days. You can see on the monitor, we’re shooting 24fps at 3200 ISO (the higher of the ‘s two native ISOs) and I still needed to be wide open to get something useable at ~6pm.
Fortunately, I can just darken the footage to near black in post to hide most of the noise (awesome low-light filmmaking hack, hope they don’t patch it).
Anyways, we did the final round of filming last night, and all that remains is the edit. Thanks for sticking with us, and a big thanks to and for helping out with some of the filming… I am reminded all the time that filmmaking is group project 🌲🛣️🎥

We’re brewing up something spooky for Halloween 2024…💀
Sean and I pulled out the old shoulder rig this past weekend to get some footage for this year’s Halloween video. As always, we’re running this on a tight schedule, but you’ll see what we’ve come up with this Thursday 🎃... Stay tuned!!! 🌲🛣️🎥

New Pine Cone tomorrow!
I ran into a frustrating issue exporting this video from Premiere Pro. These black grids appear in every render for just a few frames, regardless of the format or bitrate, and never in the same part of the video.
That being said, it’s only been for this video. A recent client video I exported had no glitches at all, which makes me suspect that the issue is related to downsampling. This Pine Cone was shot in 4K, and I’m downscaling to something like 1080x608 for Instagram, while the client video was exported at the native footage resolution. I also saw online that people think this is an issue with the latest release of Premiere Pro, and that their problems went away when they downgraded to the previous version.
While either of these could be true, I had to downsample the recent Costa Rica video with the Orchid Bee in order to export it, and there were no issues in the result. Have any other Premiere Pro users run into this problem?
Either way, testing can wait. I ended up switching over to software encoding for the latest render (and it took FOREVER). Pine Cone Ep. 3 is done, and it’ll be up tomorrow 🌲🛣️🎥

Our newest short, CHECK CHECK MATE, is out now!!!
The footage used in this short was taken in 2017 during my freshman year of college. I was still using the XA30 camcorder, and I couldn’t help but bother my roommates Doug and Baba while they were playing chess so I could do a camera/lighting test. Thanks for tolerating me guys 🙏
This was a lot of fun to edit, from choosing and lining up the music to editing in the chess piece foley… the most interesting part, though, was experimenting with transparency. I tried to use a few blending modes, different kinds of transitions, and some opacity tricks to spice this one up a bit, and I think they elevated it above where it would have been without.
Hopefully, this is the first in a series of videos using some of the older footage I have in my drives. There are a lot of gems in there I’d like to polish up just like this one.

In case you missed our TEN YEAR celebration video, we announced that the first for MULTIPHASE, the sequel to our national parks sci-fi short film UNPHASED, is coming this month!!!
We want to take this opportunity to give a special thank you to Brenda and Leo ( and ) for joining us on this journey. They were with us in for the filming of Unphased, for the filming of Multiphase, and in for the filming of [REDACTED]. Filled up a fresh 1TB on a recent trip to with and .
It was surreal watching the camera count down the remaining seconds of footage I could shoot, and it was even more exciting stopping the recording with 1 second left like I was diffusing a bomb in an action movie.
That’s why you ALWAYS bring a spare bomb. My analogy has overstayed its welcome.

🏜️THE UTAH SAGA - Final Part: “The Last Sunset”
As our time in drew to a close, we decided to end our last night with a drive out to in for some ; many had lauded that spot as one of the best views in the area.
Before the sun went down, , , and I climbed up onto the ridge next to Balanced Rock to get a of the sky while the others took from below. Even with all of the clouds obstructing the view of the sun, it was a spectacular experience seeing so much in so many colors.
After the sun had set, a few of the gang stuck around to do some , including lighting up the rock with a red headlamp for a photo from . The next day, we packed up all our gear, dropped off our vehicles, and returned home.
That marks the end of this series of posts on our adventure in Utah. Thank you to everyone who interacted with these posts, and a BIG thank you to the group that I was lucky enough to have with me on this trip. Goodbye for now, Utah. Until next time…🌲🛣️🎥
