'My manager called me, I was just at home watching TV, and he said he had got me a fight with the new superstar from America. He told me I’d be fighting the best America had to offer, a fighter that was called The King of New York. I wanted to be The King of New York, and after I beat [Sugar Ray Leonard] I was! The fans went crazy after that win, I was partying for a long, long time after that win.
The second fight, I was up to around 196 pounds and my manager said I had to go back to Panama right now, that the second fight was signed. I said, ‘Are you crazy!’ I knew I couldn’t fight again so soon. But I had a month to lose all that weight. I starved myself, I pushed myself so hard. In sparring, I felt each punch from my sparring partners, they felt like rocks. I was ill and I felt bad. I crawled to the weighing scale. I then had a cup of coffee and some water and I felt sick. Later I saw members from Leonard’s team loosening the ropes in the ring, in the corners. In the fight, when I had Leonard in the corner, he was able to get away from my punches. There were a lot of shady things in that fight
Also, I never said the words, ‘No Mas.’ That was made up by American commentator Howard Cosell. He didn’t like me very much, because I never gave him many interviews. So he made that up. I waved my arms in the air, yes, but I never said anything. How could Cosell have heard me anyway, from all the way across the ring where he was? I had really bad stomach cramps and I thought I would lose the fight, then get the third fight and make sure I was in top shape to kick his a**.'

'When I sparred and trained with Ali, he told me you need to work out your opponent before you get into the ring. You need to study them closely, and with time, the ability to assess how your opponent will fight becomes almost instinctive. This is what Ali was doing behind all his talk and bravado - sizing up his opponents.
More than any other boxer, Ali could read a fighter very quickly. He would watch film and video of his opponents in action, well before other sporting codes caught on to this method, studying their fights over and over. It's easy to forget sometimes that great talent is not just God-given, but developed through hard work, and Ali trained harder and smarter than his opponents.'

🥊 Kevin Rooney was asked when he thought Mike Tyson was at his prime best as a fighter. This was his response….
“When he beat Michael Spinks. He just wiped him out. Before that he beat Tony Tucker and Tyrell Biggs, the main fighters back then. He wiped out Tony Tucker – he won a 12 round decision, I mean, he kicked his ass. Then he knocked out Tyrell Biggs. He knocked out Larry Holmes. Then he fought Tony Tubbs in Japan – he starched him in two rounds. Then he knocked out Michael Spinks in 90 seconds. 90 seconds. It wasn’t a joke. I mean, he knocked him out. So I think that fighter, in my opinion, could have and should have probably beaten anybody that was in his path. Anybody including Rocky Marciano and Muhammad Ali. Well, I’ll give Muhammad Ali and Rocky – well it could have been different, I mean, Rocky punched like hell. Muhammad punched like hell. Rocky had beat everyone. Muhammad had heart and was hard to hit. The fights would have been interesting. But I believe that Mike would have come out the better. Because he punched very hard [laughs]. Mike…I believe that Mike is one of the hardest punchers in history. He punches harder than Rocky. Punches harder than Joe Louis. Punches harder than George Foreman.”

Rocky Marciano At 5'10 and with the smallest reach of any heavyweight champion, Marciano wouldn't even make the Cruiserweight limit today. Despite his natural disadvantages & starting the sport late at 23, he still carved out one of the most legendary & iconic careers in history. Boxing's toughest & most well conditioned heavyweight, Rocky out fought all that stood before him, defeating the likes of Jersey Joe Walcott, Ezzard Charles & Archie Moore across his 3 year reign as heavyweight champion, retiring with a perfect 49-0 (43KO) record at the age of 31!

Rocky Marciano annihilated Joe Louis
Joe Louis was 37 and Marciano was 28, is that the real reason for such a big upset?
Facts:
1) Joe Louis 6 1/2 was the favotite against Rocky Marciano 5 underdog!
2)In Aug, 25, 1948, Louis knocked Jersey Joe Wolcott out and retained his world title once again and in March, 1, 1949 announced his retirenment.
The last time Louis was defeated was in 1936 vs Max Schmelling
3) in Sep, 27, 1950 Louis made a come back but lost the battle to Ezzard Charles in a 15 R split decision
4) 2 mnths after losing to Ezzard Charles, Louis beat Brion, and this was the last fight in 1950beat.
5) in 1951, in the first 8 months Louis beat 7 tough opponents to prove he is still the best
6) after beating Bivond and Brion in Aug, 1951, Louis was supposed to fight Rocky Marciano in October 1951
7) Marciano won 7 fights in 1951 before facing Louis
Louis was the first big name to fight for Marciano, it was an important fight and the last step for Louis to get a title shot.
On October 21, 1951 in Madison Square Guarden, a crowd of 17241 witnessed the battle between Joe Louis, 214 lbs vs Rocky Marciano, 184 lbs
Louis 6 1/2 to 5 was the favorite
Louis was older but his 8 wins and excellent performances after the come back had convienced everyone that Louis would be the champ once again very soon.
But the predictions went wrong, Marciano ddn't just knock Joe Louis out! After a knockdown in R8, Marciano mved in for the kill and ended the fight with a right that sent Louis through the ropes and onto the ring apron.
Marcano fought 3 other opponents before getting the title shot vs Henry Mathewas in July 1952. Anyways, it was the begnning of the Marciano era in boxing.
Marciano never tasted the defeat, Joe Louis later after Marciano's death called him as the greatest heavyweight of all time, something that made Ali crazy! Ali, himself, considered Marciano the greatest and toughest after himself(Ali).
Many have believed that Marciano never faced an elite fighter in his prime, so he is not that great, but even such a statement is a proof that Marciano was greater than boxing for 5 years. Jersey Joe Wolcott. Ezzard Charles, Joe Louis, Archie Noore, Mathewas, etc, were the world champions who all got destroyed and knocked out by Marciano.
Ali, later, named Marciano as the toughest opponent he would have ever faced describing him as a bull that just kept coming to knock you out and was able to take any kind of punch but still kept coming to destroy you!
Iron Mike in response to a reporter considered it as one of the greatest honors to hear that they often compare Mike and Marciano in the same level
Question: Could Marciano be competitive against today's heavyweights, George?
George Foreman: Yes, cause he’d be in shape;they all would just run and hug him!
This one is the most interesting one🤣 from Smokin Joe
"Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight champion of all time. Rocky Marciano is second only to Louis. Where do I rate Ali? Somewhere below me. I beat him, and if I could beat him, no doubt Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano could have beaten him.”
— Joe Frazier

Crowned in 5 different weight categories, from welter to light heavyweight, the American legend, "Sugar" Ray Leonard ignited boxing in the 1980s. Mobile, lively, precise, powerful, intelligent, elegant, "Sugar" Ray Leonard counts among the greatest boxers in history.
Olympic champion at the age of 20 at the Montreal Games, in 1976, in the super-lightweight category, he turned pro 6 months later, after 150 fights (145 victories), and ignited the 80s, the last great golden age of noble art.

Ali and Joe did a lot of damage to each other that night. Both of their faces were mis-shapen afterward. Ali's face was no longer round. Frazier's was all bruised, swollen and cut up. In a way, it was horrible watching their features change. But it was history in the making, an incredible fight.
There were several moments that stand out in my mind. One of them, which I'm glad people don't remember, came in the 10th round. Frazier was a bull of a fighter. When I broke them apart, all I had to do was say, 'Break,' and Ali would float back, but I had to use physical pressure with Joe - Otherwise, he'd just keep coming in. Midway through the tenth round, I broke them, and Joe kept coming, right through me. The little finger of my right hand was extended. And of course, when you're refereeing. you keep your fingernails cut short and smooth so there's no problem. But my finger hit him in the bottom of the eye socket, stuck him hard. He looked at me and said, 'Goddamn, man; keep your hands off me.' And he turned to go back to his corner to clear his eye, saying, 'Damn, I got two men beating up on me.
It was the last round that I remember best. That round showed me that Muhammad Ali was the most valiant fighter I've ever seen. Frazier hit him as hard as a man can be hit. Ali was exhausted. He went down, and anyone else would have stayed on the canvas, but he was up in three seconds. I didn't even have time to pick up a count. I motioned Frazier to a neutral corner. Joe went right there, and when I turned around to face Ali, he was on his feet. I didn't ask if he was all right. The last thing you do is ask a fighter who's been beaten up or is dazed, a fighter who might be hurt, if he wants to continue; because if he's any kind of fighter at all, he'll say yes. And of course, Ali wasn't just any kind of fighter; he was possibly the greatest and most courageous fighter who ever lived. No, it's the referee's job to make a determination, and I never thought of stopping it. The fight was too close. And Ali, while it had been a devastating punch, was back up and very much in control of himself. In fact, he fought better in that round after the knockdown than before it.'

🚨‼️ CANELO FINALLY AGREES TO FIGHTING TERENCE CRAWFORD; ON ONE CONDITION…
“Crawford is a great fighter, obviously, three divisions below. As I’ve said before, I’ve fought bigger guys in my category, smaller guys, older guys, younger guys. At the end of the day, I was born to fight and I’ll fight anyone, obviously on terms that suit me best.” said Canelo.
“At this point in my career I’ll always make the best fights but they have to benefit me.”
“It depends on the money, but why not?”

More Rocky than Rocky.
Burt Young, who played Paulie in the Rocky franchise, was actually trained by Cus D'Amato (who trained Floyd Patterson and Mike Tyson) and went 17-0 as a professional.
According to Wikipedia: Young served a tour of duty in the United States Marine Corps from 1957 to 1959. While in the Marine Corps, he won 32 of 34 boxing bouts. He later turned pro and compiled a 17-0 record under three different aliases. His manager was Cus D'Amato.

On March 4th 1943 at the age of 20, Rocky Marciano enlisted into the Army and was sent overseas to Europe. Marciano was assigned to the 150th Combat Engineers and stationed in Wales where he helped ferry supplies across the English Channel to Normandy. The 150th regiment went on to receive honorary service stars for their assistance in Normandy and Central Europe during World War 2.
Marciano first took up boxing in the army, reportedly as a way to get out of kitchen duty.
When the war ended, Rocky received an honorable discharge from the Army with the rank of Private First Class, in order to pursue his boxing career.
Rocky Marciano went on to finish unbeaten his entire professional career with 49 wins, 43 KO's and 0 defeats. Marciano remains the only fighter ever to have stopped every opponent he ever faced for the world heavyweight title.
The word legend is thrown around too much these days. Rocky Marciano, a true legend.
