Mr Smith Aerial Welcome to Mr Smith Aerial, the website of aerial film and photographer Andy Smith. I have worked with and supplied footage and photography for various clients.

Welcome to Mr Smith Aerial, the page of drone pilot, aerial filmmaker and photographer Andy Smith. I am a CAA approved UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) pilot with A2 CofC and GVC licenses. I am able to operate in both the open and specific commercial drone flying categories. I have spent the last 16 years working as an Art Director and Creative Director in Design and Advertising agencies. You can see

more of my experience in that field over at my other site www.mrsmith-creative.com

I use two great drones. The Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom. A great pair of nimble, flexible, high tech machines. Both shoot film in 4K and stills in RAW. I try to approach every aerial project with an Art Directors' eye. I am interested in making beautiful films, capturing extraordinary points of view and perspectives, and composing stunning images. I enjoy working with directors, or directing myself.

New drone reel!

As 2024 draws to an end, I come to my favourite editing task of the year, my drone reel.

Looking through the footage, I realise I have had some great projects this year, and a huge variety of different challenges. I feel incredibly lucky to do something I love as part of my work. I am extremely grateful to the wonderful clients who put their faith in me this year, and for the projects and places they trusted me to explore.

In 2024, I further experimented with video and editing techniques, such as hyper lapse and waypoints, and had some challenging shoots, which stretched my skills to the limit.

Thank you everyone! All the best for 2025. I have big plans!

Andy

Some views of Gin Head in East Lothian, an unusual site. This is an abandoned World War 2 radar station, situated on a cliff poking out into the Firth of Forth. It is difficult to get to, and is closed to the public. There is a private beach nearby called Canty Bay, and at low tide you can walk along and stand underneath it. So I did, with my drone and sent her up for a closer look. It is the ultimate Bond villain lair.

A slice of Edinburgh, from above ❤️

It's great to hear that newly-elected Chris Murray MP has secured a Westminster Hall debate on the cultural and economic contribution of the Edinburgh Festivals. What the Festivals deliver for our city and its communities, not only in August but across the year, is simply enormous. We're delighted it's being discussed - and can't wait to tune in!

📺 Watch it live on Tue 8 October, 4.30pm-5.30pm, on parliamentlive.tv

The magnificent Bass Rock off the East Lothian coast is an island in the outer part of the Firth of Forth. I had the privilege of being taken out by boat to get a closer look.

Approximately 2 km (1 mi) offshore, and 5 km (3 mi) north-east of North Berwick, it is a steep-sided volcanic plug, 107 m (351 ft) at its highest point, and is home to a large colony of gannets.

The rock is uninhabited, but historically has been settled by an early Christian hermit, and later was the site of an important castle, which after the Commonwealth period was used as a prison.

The island belongs to Hew Hamilton-Dalrymple, whose family acquired it in 1706, and before to the Lauder family for almost six centuries. The Bass Rock Lighthouse was constructed on the rock in 1902, and the remains of an ancient chapel survive.

It has been a pleasure to shoot aerial imagery for the new Loretto website: www.loretto.com

This kind of imagery is perfect for showcasing buildings and premises. Drone photography can show large spaces which are impossible to capture from the ground. It can give your venue perspective and context with the surrounding area. Shooting at sunrise in the best light will make it look gorgeous and dramatic.

For this project, I was able to create aerial panoramas to capture the entire 80+ acre site. This was used to show the proximity to Edinburgh and the Pentland hills beyond, to show the surrounding town of Musselburgh, and, with a bit of Photoshop masking, was used as map to point out each feature of the huge and magnificent campus. The images and map have been used on the website and in their prospectus.

If you have a place you want to showcase, maximise its potential with a drone shoot. Get in touch: [email protected]

Fidra is one of several islands in the Firth of Forth. Each have their own character and stories. This one served as the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson's famous book Treasure Island. It has a cool natural arch, a lighthouse and has been settled in the past. You can see low walls where livestock would have been kept, and small crops grown for food. Now it is a bird sanctuary.

The geese are taking flight, and the leaves are beginning to turn, an early autumn seems likely. Which means loads of lovely tree colours coming soon.

Here is a shot of the Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh, a perfect place to see the changing foliage in all its glory.
